Short answer: Meta says information you submit to its AI features may be used to improve its products and for other purposes, and some chat information may be retained to personalize replies or selected questions shared with search partners. Meta distinguishes that information from ordinary private messages between friends and family: it says those messages are not used for AI training unless someone chooses to share them with an AI feature. Public posts, camera-roll features, and media captured on AI glasses have separate rules and controls.
These answers describe Meta’s published policies and product explanations, not independent audits. Where Meta has announced a region-specific rule or feature, the region and date are identified.
Does Meta AI use my prompts to train its models?
Meta says it uses information people share with its generative AI features—including Meta AI and business AI features—to improve its products and for other purposes. That means a prompt is not necessarily treated as a one-time input used only to generate the reply on screen. Meta’s public explanation also says AI interactions may be used for training in some circumstances, including the EU program it announced in 2025.

There are several distinct ways information from a prompt may be handled. Meta says information shared in a chat may be retained to provide more personalized responses or relevant information in that conversation. It also says certain questions may be shared with trusted partners, such as search providers, to help supply relevant, accurate, and up-to-date answers. These are separate from the question of whether information is used to improve a product or train a model.

Meta says both automated technology and people review interactions with AI to improve performance and reduce the likelihood that personal information shared with an AI feature appears in outputs to others. Its explanation does not say that every conversation is reviewed by a person, and it does not give a percentage of chats reviewed or a complete sampling and retention schedule. Treat this as Meta’s description of its practices, rather than an independently verified account.
In a generative-AI privacy explanation published September 27, 2023 and updated November 21, 2025, Meta’s Director of Product Management Mike Clark wrote: “The AIs may retain and use information you share in a chat to provide more personalized responses or relevant information in that conversation, and we may share certain questions you ask with trusted partners, such as search providers, to give you more relevant, accurate, and up-to-date responses.”
Meta’s published materials do not establish one retention period that applies to every consumer AI prompt. Do not assume that deleting a conversation means that any information already reflected in model behavior is immediately removed from the model.
Does Meta train AI on public posts?
Meta’s explanation of the generative AI features announced at Connect in 2023 says the underlying models were trained using a combination of publicly available online information, licensed data, and information from Meta products and services. Meta said it filtered the public-online dataset to exclude certain websites that commonly share personal information. For those 2023-announced models, Meta said publicly shared Facebook and Instagram posts—including text and photos—were part of the training data, while private posts were not.
That account of public-post training is different from the handling of a prompt you send to Meta AI. A public post may be relevant as material used in training, while a prompt is information deliberately supplied to an AI feature and may be processed to answer, personalize, or improve the service. Neither category should be confused with an ordinary private message that was not shared with an AI.

For the EU, Meta’s April 14, 2025 announcement said it would train AI at Meta using adults’ public content on its products, including public posts and comments, as well as people’s interactions with Meta AI, such as questions and queries. The announcement was updated March 27, 2026 to clarify the private-message exception described below. Meta said public data from accounts belonging to EU users under 18 was not being used for training, and that EU users could object to public-data training through a form.
The EU announcement is a region-specific description. It does not establish that the same objection mechanism applies worldwide, to every data type, or to every Meta AI interaction.

Does Meta use my private messages to train AI?
Meta said in a clarification dated November 21, 2025 that it does not train its AI on private messages between friends and family unless someone in the conversation chooses to share those messages with an AI feature. The exception matters: “Meta does not train on private messages” without that qualification would overstate the policy Meta describes.
Sharing a message with AI is a different action from sending an ordinary private message. If you choose to bring a message or conversation into an AI feature, Meta says the material shared with that feature may be used for product improvement and other purposes, including training. For ordinary conversations that remain outside an AI feature, Meta’s stated boundary is that they are not used for training.
There is also a group-chat distinction. Meta says that when someone asks Meta AI to join a group chat, the AI reads messages that invoke @Meta AI or replies that invoke it, rather than other messages in the chat. This is Meta’s description of how that product behavior works; it is not a general guarantee about every AI feature or every kind of message in every app.

Meta also says using a generative AI feature it provides does not link a person’s WhatsApp account information to their Facebook or Instagram account information. That statement concerns account information across those services; it does not mean that anything shared directly with an AI feature is outside the AI feature’s stated handling rules.
Can Meta AI see my photos?
Not simply because an image exists on your phone. The relevant question is how the photo reaches a Meta service or AI feature: whether you send it in a chat, publish or share it, choose a camera-roll feature, or capture it with an AI device. Meta describes different handling for these situations.
Images you send to Meta AI
If you choose to share an image with a Meta AI feature, it becomes information shared with that feature. Meta’s general explanation says information shared with generative AI features may be used to improve products and for other purposes, and may be retained in a conversation for personalization. Do not assume that the handling of an image sent in a prompt is the same as the separate camera-roll-suggestions feature below.
Facebook camera-roll suggestions
Meta described a separate, opt-in Facebook feature that suggests creative ways to use photos and videos from a person’s camera roll. Its April 16, 2026 announcement, updated August 31, 2026, said the feature was available in the EU and UK and was expanding to Bolivia, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Meta said suggestions are private to the user and the feature can be turned off.
For this specific feature, Meta said camera-roll photos and videos are not used to improve AI at Meta unless the user publishes or shares them in an AI interaction. This is not a blanket rule for every image-related Meta feature or for images deliberately sent to Meta AI. Availability can depend on location and rollout.

Photos and videos captured with AI glasses
In its July 2026 AI-glasses FAQ, Meta said photos and videos captured for a glasses gallery remain privately on the glasses until the wearer chooses to import them to a phone. The wearer decides whether to share that content elsewhere or use it with Meta AI. Meta also said the glasses use a capture LED while recording gallery photos or video.
Capturing media for a glasses gallery, importing it to a phone, and then choosing to share it with an AI are separate steps. The glasses explanation does not mean that all phone images are automatically sent to Meta AI.
Can I delete my Meta AI chats?
Meta says users can delete information shared in chats with AI across Messenger, Instagram, or WhatsApp by typing /reset-ai. Because app interfaces and controls can change, check the current in-app instructions or Meta Help Center guidance for the service you use before following a particular path. The command is the control Meta documents; availability or exact prompts shown in an app may vary.
- Open the Messenger, Instagram, or WhatsApp conversation with the AI feature.
- Check the current in-app help or Meta Help Center instructions for the conversation and confirm that the reset control applies to the information you want to delete.
- Enter
/reset-aiin the AI chat as Meta describes, then follow any confirmation steps the app presents. - Review the conversation afterward to confirm the reset action took effect. If the command is not recognized, use the current help instructions for that app rather than assuming the chat has been cleared.
A deletion control for information in a chat is not evidence that a model instantly forgets anything it may have learned from data. Meta’s responsible-innovation FAQ makes this distinction explicitly for voice recordings with Meta AI on glasses: once the recording information itself is deleted, Meta says it will not be used for future training, but the model does not change at that moment. Deleting the underlying data and reversing model behavior are different outcomes.

Meta’s general privacy-tools page also describes ways to access, manage, download, and delete personal data, as well as two-factor authentication to help protect account access. Those general privacy and security tools should not be treated as a universal opt-out from AI training.

Can I opt out of Meta AI training?
Meta documents a specific objection route for EU public-data training. Its EU announcement says people can object to the use of public content for AI training through a form. The same announcement says public data from accounts of EU users under 18 is not being used for training.
That information does not establish a complete, current list of opt-out rights by country, nor does it show that the EU objection form covers prompts, messages deliberately shared with AI, or every other data category. Meta’s reviewed official explanations do not establish a universal, worldwide opt-out for consumer AI prompts. They also do not establish that no other region has a control or legal right. Check Meta’s current Privacy Center and the notices shown in the specific feature in your location.
Camera-roll suggestions are a separate control: Meta says the Facebook feature is opt-in and can be turned off. Turning that feature off is not the same as objecting to public-post training or opting out of prompt use. Likewise, deleting a chat or using general privacy tools does not, on the evidence Meta publishes, establish a universal training opt-out.

Meta says people and automated systems review interactions with AI to improve performance and help reduce the likelihood that personal information shared with an AI feature appears in outputs to others. That statement means the possibility of human review exists. It does not say that every conversation is read by an employee, and Meta’s explanation does not specify the proportion of conversations reviewed, the full selection criteria, or a universal retention schedule.
Accordingly, avoid putting information into a prompt that you would not want processed under Meta’s stated AI practices. In particular, treat a conversation with an AI feature differently from an ordinary private message to a friend: Meta says AI-submitted information may be used for product improvement and other purposes, and selected questions may be sent to trusted partners such as search providers.

What to do before sharing something sensitive
- Identify the feature. A prompt, a public post, an ordinary private message, camera-roll suggestions, and glasses media are not interchangeable data categories.
- Share only what the AI needs. If a question can be answered without names, account details, private correspondence, or identifying image details, leave those out.
- Check the specific control. Review the current Privacy Center and in-product notices for your region; do not assume an EU-only objection process or a particular feature rollout applies where you live.
- Use the correct deletion path. Meta documents
/reset-aifor AI chats and separate deletion options for glasses voice recordings. A general account privacy tool may manage data without changing model behavior. - Keep the deletion distinction in mind. Removing source information and undoing a model’s learned behavior are not necessarily the same thing.
