Status: Meta announced that Messenger vanish mode was being removed. For disappearing messages, check the settings of an end-to-end encrypted conversation instead.
That replacement is not a promise that messages cannot be saved or captured. Meta says it may notify participants if it detects a screenshot, but detection is not guaranteed.
Where did vanish mode go on Messenger?
Meta announced on August 11, 2022, that it was removing Messenger vanish mode while keeping disappearing messages in the settings of end-to-end encrypted chats. The announcement described vanish mode as a feature where messages disappeared after they were viewed; it described the retained disappearing-messages option as letting messages disappear at a selected time after they were seen. Those descriptions refer to different mechanics, so they should not be treated as interchangeable.

What can you use instead?
Meta’s December 2023 description places disappearing messages in end-to-end encrypted Messenger conversations. Meta also said it was progressively rolling out default end-to-end encryption for personal Messenger chats and calls. Because that rollout was progressive, controls and availability may not look identical for every account or app version.
To look for the setting, open the relevant end-to-end encrypted conversation and inspect its chat settings for disappearing messages. Meta’s cited announcement confirms that general location but does not establish a current, universal sequence of taps for iPhone, Android, and web. Do not rely on an exact icon or menu path unless it matches the current version of your app.

How long do Messenger disappearing messages last?
In its December 6, 2023 announcement, Meta said Messenger disappearing messages last 24 hours after they are sent. That is the duration Meta published for the feature then; it is not the same timer description Meta gave for the older vanish mode. See Meta’s December 2023 announcement.

Are disappearing messages safe from screenshots?
No. Meta said it may notify users if it detects that someone screenshots a disappearing message. The wording is conditional: an alert depends on detection, and it is not a way to prevent screenshots or other forms of capture. Treat disappearing messages as a timer for their in-chat visibility, not as a guarantee that nobody can retain or share the content.

Meta also says users can report disappearing messages they receive if the content is inappropriate. Disappearing does not remove the ability to report a message while it is available.
