If you want fewer interruptions but plan to stay in a Messenger group chat, mute it. If you leave, you exit the conversation—but Meta’s help page confirms the option to leave without saying whether other members are notified. Don’t assume an exit is invisible.
Mute, leave, or remove: what each action does
| Action | Who can do it | Effect | What Meta’s guidance establishes about visibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mute notifications | A member managing notifications for the chat | Reduces alerts while you remain in the conversation. Meta says turning off group-chat notifications stops notifications about messages, reactions, and mentions. | The notification guidance does not say that muting sends a notice to other members. |
| Leave the chat | Any member can leave on their own, according to Meta. | Exits the conversation. | Meta confirms that you can leave, but the reviewed help page does not establish whether other members are notified or whether leaving can be hidden. |
| Remove a member | Only a group chat admin can remove another member, according to Meta. | Removes that person from the chat. | The removal guidance does not establish what notice other members see. |
These are different controls: mute changes notifications, leaving changes your membership, and removal is an admin action affecting another member.
How do I mute a Messenger group chat?
Use mute when you want fewer interruptions without exiting the conversation. Meta says turning off notifications for a group chat stops notifications about messages, reactions, and mentions in that chat. Its desktop instructions include choosing how long to mute. The exact duration choices may vary by client; the help page does not establish every app’s menu options.
Meta’s notification instructions are at Messenger notifications: turn on or off.

How do I leave a Messenger group chat without anyone knowing?
Meta says, “You can also leave a group chat on your own.” That confirms the ability to leave, but the help page does not say whether the departure is announced or otherwise visible to the other members. It also does not establish whether visibility differs by app version, region, or group type. So there is no basis here to promise a silent exit.
If your aim is simply to stop alerts while remaining a member, muting is the distinct option. Meta’s removal and leaving guidance is at Remove someone from a group chat on Messenger.

Can a Messenger group chat admin remove someone?
Yes. Meta’s Messenger Help Center states: “Only group chat admins can remove someone from a group chat on Messenger.” Its documented steps are for desktop web:
- Open the group chat.
- In the right-side menu, find Chat members.
- Open the options next to the member’s name.
- Select Remove member, then confirm.
This is the documented desktop route, not a guarantee that every device has identical menus. Check the labels in the version of Messenger you are using.

Messenger group chats and Facebook Community Chats are different
A regular Messenger group chat should not be confused with a Facebook-group Community Chat. Meta describes Community Chats as a separate feature and says they will be going away soon. Before deletion, chats will be paused: members can still read them, but cannot send messages. The cited help page gives no end date, so check Meta’s Community Chats information for the current status.
Facebook group admin or moderator permissions also belong to the separate Facebook group product; they are not the same as Messenger group-chat admin permissions. Meta’s separate explanation is Add an admin or moderator to your Facebook group.

Check the controls in your current app
Meta’s help pages and Messenger menus can change, and the removal instructions above document desktop web specifically. If a menu label or control differs in your app, use the options shown for that chat and confirm that you are acting on the right conversation before muting, leaving, or removing anyone.
