Messenger disappearing messages are a setting for end-to-end encrypted conversations. They make messages disappear from the chat after a timer, but they do not guarantee that recipients cannot save or capture the content. Meta’s published descriptions of the timer differ, so check the expiry time shown in your conversation rather than assuming one universal schedule.
What Messenger disappearing messages do
The setting makes messages in an eligible conversation disappear after a specified time. It changes how long messages remain visible in the chat; it is not a guarantee that the content can never be retained elsewhere.
Meta’s December 2023 announcement said disappearing messages lasted 24 hours after they were sent. In a March 9, 2026 update, Meta said the feature remained in encrypted chat settings and described messages disappearing at a selected time after they had been seen. Those descriptions do not establish one timing rule for every account or app version. Use the timer displayed in your chat as the practical guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy the conversation must be end-to-end encrypted
Disappearing messages are available only in end-to-end encrypted Messenger conversations, according to Meta’s December 2023 announcement. Meta began rolling out end-to-end encryption by default for personal chats and calls that month; its 2024 explainer noted that some chats could become encrypted before others.

Encryption and expiry do different jobs. End-to-end encryption protects message content between devices. The disappearing-message timer controls how long a message remains visible, according to the setting’s timing description. A chat being encrypted does not, by itself, mean its messages are set to disappear.
Where to find the setting and what to check
Meta places disappearing messages in the settings of end-to-end encrypted chats. The official descriptions do not establish a current, universal sequence of taps across platforms and app versions, so use the controls visible in your own conversation rather than relying on older screenshots or instructions.

What happens when a message expires
Meta’s technical whitepaper describes a timeout associated with a disappearing message. In that documented design, both devices automatically hide messages with a timeout after it elapses. The paper also says plaintext is removed from local storage shortly after expiry, leaving an interim period that supports abuse reporting. This is technical documentation from an earlier implementation, not a complete account of current Messenger storage or a guarantee about every current chat.

Can someone screenshot or report a disappearing message?
Yes, a recipient may still preserve or report content. Meta says people can report disappearing messages they consider inappropriate. It also says Messenger will notify users if it detects someone taking a screenshot of a disappearing message. That qualification matters: Meta describes a notification when a screenshot is detected, not a guarantee that every capture method will be detected.
- A person can remember, copy, or otherwise preserve information before it expires.
- Another device can photograph the screen; the cited Meta statement does not promise detection of external-camera captures.
- Reporting remains possible even though a message is set to disappear.
Meta’s January 2022 announcement discussed screenshot notifications in encrypted chats and compared them with the feature then offered in vanish mode. That is historical context, not evidence that all screenshots or other forms of copying trigger a notification today.

Is Messenger vanish mode still available?
Meta said on March 9, 2026, that it was removing Messenger vanish mode because very few people opted in. The same update said disappearing messages would remain in the settings of end-to-end encrypted chats, with messages disappearing at a selected time after they had been seen. See Meta’s March 2026 Messenger update.
