Message suggestions work best when they help you decide what to say without deciding—or sending—for you. A short reply chip, an editable generated draft, and a prompt that searches for information are different features: they use context in different ways and can do different things when tapped.
What kind of message suggestion are you looking at?
The label “suggestion” can describe several interactions. Check what a tap does before assuming a suggestion is merely a possible reply.

These distinctions matter for both control and privacy: selecting proposed words for review is not the same action as launching a search.

Suggestions depend on the feature and the conversation, so an empty suggestion area does not necessarily mean something is broken. Apple’s UIKit documentation gives specific examples for Smart Reply in messaging: the input field is empty, the latest message is from the other participant, and recent messages are text rather than images or emoji. Apple also says suggestions might not appear every time. Apple’s Smart Reply documentation describes these as contextual conditions, not a guarantee that a reply will be generated.

Other systems use different context. Google says Magic Compose’s message-suggestion feature uses the previous 20 messages as context and processes them on-device with Gemini Nano on devices with AICore. That describes this feature, not a universal rule for messaging suggestions.
How to keep control of the words you send
A suggestion should remain an option, not an automatic substitute for your judgment. For short replies, inspect the text before sending. For a longer generated draft, read the whole message and edit anything that is inaccurate, too intimate, too formal, or unlike your voice. A suggestion may fit the immediate exchange while missing nuance that matters to you.

The interaction itself is a useful clue: Apple’s documented flow places selected text in the text UI, while Google’s Magic Compose instructions allow editing before sending. Those examples show ways a product can preserve review, but they do not establish that every app or suggestion type behaves this way. For a search-oriented prompt, consider that tapping it initiates a search rather than choosing words to send.

Privacy depends on the particular feature and what you do with it. Google says Gemini suggestions in Messages are created on-device from recent chats and are visible only to the person using the feature, although another person using Google Messages might see the same suggestions. Google distinguishes the suggestion from the action after a tap: tapping asks Gemini to search for the term, and Google says the search terms—not the conversation—are sent to Gemini. Separately, the suggestion category and whether you tapped it may be sent to Google to improve suggestions. See Google’s explanation of Gemini privacy in Messages.

Magic Compose has its own stated processing details: Google says its message-suggestion feature uses the 20 previous messages for context and that processing occurs on-device with Gemini Nano on devices with AICore. Do not assume this description applies to all generated drafts, other apps, or information searches. Google’s Magic Compose help page describes that feature’s behavior and eligibility.
For developers, Google says ML Kit Smart Reply runs on-device and uses the conversation context. On-device processing is a useful distinction, but it does not by itself establish how an app stores, shares, or otherwise handles data outside that feature. Review the app’s own privacy information for those practices. Google’s ML Kit documentation also says Smart Reply is intended for casual consumer conversations and supports English.

When a suggestion is a poor fit
A short, context-matched reply can be convenient in an everyday exchange, but it may be unsuitable when the conversation needs precision, care, or professional judgment. Google explicitly scopes ML Kit Smart Reply to casual consumer conversations; that is not evidence that it is appropriate for sensitive or high-stakes messages. Even when a suggestion appears relevant, the sender is responsible for checking whether it says what they mean.

Availability and eligibility also vary. Google describes Magic Compose as experimental and of limited availability; rewrite functionality has age, language, device, and account requirements. Those conditions can change, so check the current in-product help for your device and account rather than treating any one eligibility description as permanent.

If you want fewer suggestions
There is no single setting that controls every feature called a suggestion. A reply chip, a generated-draft tool, and an informational search prompt may have separate controls, and the available options depend on the app and device. Look in the relevant messaging app’s settings or help for the specific feature name, and check the keyboard’s settings if suggestions appear above the keyboard across multiple apps. If there is no disable control, ignoring a suggestion does not select or send it; avoid tapping a search prompt unless you want to start that search.
