To get an alert when a message arrives, allow notifications for your messaging app, then choose whether you want a sound, vibration, or visual alert. On iPhone, start in Settings; with Google Messages on Android, start in the app’s notification settings. If alerts still do not appear, check interruption modes and conversation-level settings.
Choose how you want message alerts to work
Message alerts can be audible, tactile, visual, or repeated. The right choice depends on whether you need to notice messages immediately or avoid interruptions. A sound or repeat alert is more noticeable but can be disruptive; vibration or a visual notification may suit a quiet setting.
- Alert form: Choose sound, vibration or haptics, a visual notification, or a reminder where available.
- Scope: Use a general setting for conversations, or a distinct tone for a particular person when supported.
- Interruption policy: Do Not Disturb and other modes can filter alerts even when the messaging app is allowed to notify.
- Destination: With an Apple Watch paired, a message notification may go to the watch instead of the iPhone.
Set up message alerts on iPhone
- Open Settings > Notifications > Messages. On some iOS versions, the path is Settings > Apps > Messages > Notifications.
- Turn on Allow Notifications.
- Choose where alerts appear and whether they make a sound. To choose a text tone and haptic pattern, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Text Tone. These sound and vibration controls can affect other apps too; use the Messages notification page for app-specific alert choices.
- For a repeat alert, open Settings > Notifications > Messages > Customize Notifications > Repeat Alerts and select an available option. Apple documents a range from Never through 10 Times.
- For a distinct tone for one person, open that conversation, tap the contact, edit the contact information, and choose Text Tone.
Apple’s instructions and troubleshooting guidance are in Stop, mute, and change message notifications on iPhone and If you don’t receive Messages notifications on your iPhone or iPad. Menu labels can vary by iOS release, so use Settings search for Messages if the path differs.
Set up message alerts in Google Messages on Android
- Open Google Messages.
- Tap your profile photo or icon, then Messages settings or Settings, depending on the app version.
- Tap Notifications and turn on Incoming messages.
- Choose a sound, vibration, or reminder behavior if the options are available on your device.
Google says some instructions require Android 8.0 or newer. Android menus and controls can differ on customized versions, so consult your phone maker’s support instructions if these labels do not match. Google’s Change Messages notifications & settings also explains how to set Google Messages as the default SMS app: open Settings > Apps > Default apps > SMS app, then choose it.

Fix message alerts that do not arrive
Check these settings in order. If you use an Android messaging app other than Google Messages, look for its notification and incoming-message controls; Android does not have one universal path across phone makers.
- Confirm app permission and the incoming-message alert. Make sure notifications are allowed for the messaging app. In Google Messages, check Messages settings > Notifications > Incoming messages.
- Check active interruption modes. Do Not Disturb, Bedtime, Driving, or another mode may block or filter alerts. Android modes can allow or exclude particular people and apps, and automatic schedules may turn a mode back on. Check Quick Settings to see whether a mode is active. Exact settings paths vary by phone; Android’s instructions also note that some Modes and Do Not Disturb guidance requires Android 14 or newer. See Limit interruptions with Modes & Do Not Disturb on Android.
- Check the individual conversation on iPhone. Open the conversation and look for Hide Alerts. When enabled, it silences that conversation rather than all messages.
- Review iPhone message filtering. Unknown Senders and Spam filtering can affect alerts. Apple says that in iOS 26, Filter Spam is on by default; when Screen Unknown Senders is also on, messages from unknown senders or messages identified as spam do not generate a notification.
- Check mute and app activity on iPhone. A silenced device will not play a sound. If Messages is open and active, iPhone does not show a separate notification for each new message.
- Check a paired Apple Watch. Apple routes Messages notifications to either the watch or the iPhone, not both. If an alert is not appearing on the phone, check the watch.
Apple’s device-specific troubleshooting steps are in If you don’t receive Messages notifications on your iPhone or iPad.
