There is no single best distance between mesh routers. Start by placing each wireless node no more than about two rooms from a neighboring node, then use your system’s app, mesh test, signal indicator, or LED to confirm the connection. If the link is weak, move the node closer or reduce the obstacles between devices.
How far apart should mesh nodes be?
Use “within about two rooms” as a starting point, not a guaranteed limit. Google recommends placing a Wifi point no more than two rooms from the router or another point, and Linksys suggests two rooms or one floor while keeping obstacles to a minimum. Both are qualitative guidelines: rooms vary in size, walls and floors affect signals differently, and each home has its own layout.
Manufacturer figures are not interchangeable. ASUS recommends no more than 10–15 m between nodes for multiple mesh packs. That is ASUS guidance, not a universal standard. Inseego’s X700 user guide gives a 5 GHz mesh range of up to 50 feet and estimates that one wall reduces range by roughly 10 feet; those figures apply to that product, not other mesh systems. (ASUS ROG Support; Inseego X700 user guide)

Where should you put a wireless node?
Start with the main router
Put the main unit in an open, visible, and reasonably central location, as close as practical to where the modem connection enters the home. Elevate it where the setup allows. A central position gives the mesh a useful starting point for reaching multiple areas. (Google Nest Help)
Place the satellite partway toward the weak area
Put a wireless satellite between the main unit and the room or area that needs better coverage—roughly halfway toward it, while keeping it within about two rooms of a working node as an initial placement. Avoid putting it at the far edge of the dead zone: it needs a sufficiently strong connection to the rest of the mesh to relay traffic. Google describes placement as an “inexact science,” so check the connection after choosing a location rather than relying on distance alone. (Google Nest Help; Linksys Support)

- Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
Keep the path open
Place units in the open rather than inside cabinets, behind televisions, or next to large metal objects. Walls, floors, appliances, and other sources of interference can weaken the wireless link. TP-Link specifically identifies microwaves, Bluetooth devices, and USB 3.0 devices as possible interference sources; Linksys also cautions against locations near glass, refrigerators, fish tanks, and microwaves. Try a different spot if the node’s signal check shows a weak connection. (TP-Link Deco placement guide; Linksys Support)

TP-Link recommends placing Deco satellites at the same height as the source unit; its guide describes 1–1.5 feet off the floor as ideal. This is Deco-specific placement advice, not a requirement for every mesh system. (TP-Link Deco placement guide)

How to check whether the spacing works
- Open the mesh system’s app or status page. Find its signal-strength indicator, node connection status, or mesh-test function.
- Run the system’s check after placing the node. Google recommends a mesh test and adjusting placement if needed. TP-Link describes checking signal strength and recommends two bars in its system. These are system-specific checks, not universal thresholds. (Google Nest Help; TP-Link Deco placement guide)
- Use the indicator for your own system. Linksys says an RSSI below -70 dBm indicates poor signal in its guidance. Do not apply that threshold to another brand unless its documentation says to. (Linksys Support)
- Adjust and check again. If the link remains weak, move the node nearer to its neighboring unit, reduce the number of barriers, or try a more open location.
When wired backhaul changes the placement question
With wireless backhaul, each satellite needs a good wireless connection to a neighboring mesh unit, so node spacing and the path between units matter. With Ethernet backhaul, nodes use a wired link instead of relaying traffic over that wireless node-to-node connection. The wireless coverage still depends on where the units are placed, but the backhaul no longer imposes the same wireless-link constraint. TP-Link describes wired backhaul as more stable and faster than wireless, and ASUS calls Ethernet its best-performing backhaul option. Check that your mesh system supports Ethernet backhaul before planning around it. (TP-Link Deco placement guide; ASUS ROG Support)

- Node-to-node connection: Use your system’s app, mesh test, signal indicator, or LED.
- Obstacles: Consider the number and type of walls or floors, along with nearby metal and appliances.
- Coverage target: Choose a location partway toward the weak area, not a spot where the node itself has a poor connection.
- Backhaul: Determine whether the node relies on wireless backhaul or can use Ethernet.
- Compatibility: If adding a node is necessary, choose one compatible with your existing mesh ecosystem; compatibility is not guaranteed across brands.
If moving a node and reducing obstructions do not produce a reliable connection, check whether your system supports a compatible additional node or Ethernet backhaul. Those are options to consider after correcting placement, not substitutes for checking the existing mesh link. (ASUS ROG Support; TP-Link Deco placement guide)
