This Part 1 reference targets Express 5 on Node.js 18 or later, with TypeScript and Mongoose. It covers a minimal setup, Express routes and error handling, typed Mongoose models and local connections, and when to use aggregation. “Auth” is intentionally scoped: the title does not specify sessions, JWTs, OAuth, or another authentication design, so this guide explains what can be established without choosing one for you.
Set up Express 5 with TypeScript
Express is JavaScript software and does not include its own TypeScript definitions. Install Express and Mongoose as runtime dependencies, then add TypeScript and the community-maintained Express and Node.js types as development dependencies:
npm install express mongoose
npm install --save-dev typescript @types/express @types/node
If you add middleware packages that do not include TypeScript declarations, check whether separate community-maintained types are available. For example, session middleware users may need @types/express-session.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesExpress 5 requires Node.js 18 or later. Its migration documentation warns that Express 4 applications may encounter breaking changes when upgraded, so do not assume an existing Express 4 app will work unchanged. The Node minimum for Express 4 is not stated in the cited migration guidance.

| Choice | Runtime guidance | Compatibility note |
|---|---|---|
| Express 5 | Node.js 18 or later | New major version; check the migration guidance before upgrading. |
| Express 4 | Minimum not stated here | An Express 4 app may need changes to run on Express 5. |
A conventional TypeScript workflow type-checks and emits JavaScript before Node runs the application. For example, use a Node-oriented module configuration and strict checking in tsconfig.json, then run npx tsc to check and compile the project. If you instead run TypeScript directly with Node, note the narrower requirements: the Express installation guide documents this for Node.js 22.18.0 or later (or 23.6.0 or later on the v23 line) and TypeScript 5.8 or later. Node’s native type stripping does not type-check the program; run npx tsc for that.
Build routes and middleware that complete the request
Express runs middleware in sequence during a request-response cycle. A middleware function can inspect or change the request and response, end the response, or pass control to the next middleware. If it does neither of the last two, the request hangs. Express’s middleware guide states: “If a middleware function does not end the request-response cycle, it must call next() to pass control to the next middleware function. Otherwise, the request will be left hanging.”
A minimal app can parse JSON before defining routes. A route handler passed directly to an Express route method can use inferred types; in a path such as /users/:id, req.params.id is a string.

import express from "express";
const app = express();
app.use(express.json());
app.get("/users/:id", async (req, res) => {
const id = req.params.id;
res.json({ id });
});
Use app-level middleware with app.use() for behavior shared across routes, or attach middleware to a router or route when it applies only there. In either case, make sure each middleware either sends a response or calls next().
Forward asynchronous errors in Express 5
Express catches synchronous throws in route handlers and middleware. In Express 5, a handler that returns a Promise forwards a rejection to next automatically. That makes a returned async route straightforward:
app.get("/users/:id", async (req, res) => {
const user = await findUser(req.params.id);
res.json(user);
});
If the promise is not returned, or the failing work uses a callback, forward its error explicitly. A returned promise chain can use .catch(next); a callback can call next(err):

app.get("/report", (req, res, next) => {
createReport((err, report) => {
if (err) return next(err);
res.json(report);
});
});
app.get("/summary", (req, res, next) => {
buildSummary()
.then((summary) => res.json(summary))
.catch(next);
});
Define error middleware with four parameters and place it after routes and other middleware. When headers have already been sent, delegate the error with next(err) so Express’s default handler can complete error handling.
app.use((err, req, res, next) => {
if (res.headersSent) return next(err);
res.status(500).json({ error: "Internal server error" });
});
Separately defined route handlers and error middleware may need explicit TypeScript annotations if their types are not inferred from an Express route method.
Define a Mongoose model whose TypeScript shape matches its schema
Mongoose’s TypeScript guide describes defining a document interface where useful, creating a schema, and then creating a model. Mongoose can infer types from schemas in many cases, but when you supply an interface, you are responsible for keeping it aligned with the schema. TypeScript interfaces do not perform runtime validation; the schema is the runtime definition.

import { model, Schema } from "mongoose";
interface User {
email: string;
displayName?: string;
}
const userSchema = new Schema<User>({
email: { type: String, required: true },
displayName: { type: String },
});
const UserModel = model<User>("User", userSchema);
Here, email is required in both the interface and schema, while displayName is optional in the interface and not marked required in the schema. A mismatch such as a schema-required field declared optional in the interface may not be caught by Mongoose’s TypeScript checking, so review both definitions together.
Connect to a local MongoDB server
For a local database, use 127.0.0.1 in the connection URI:
import mongoose from "mongoose";
await mongoose.connect("mongodb://127.0.0.1:27017/myapp");
The Mongoose connection guide recommends this form because Node.js 18 and later prefer IPv6 addresses and may resolve localhost to ::1. If MongoDB is not listening on IPv6, that resolution can prevent a connection. Confirm that the server is running and listening at the address and port in the URI if connection attempts fail.

For a database that requires authentication, the URI can contain credentials and an authSource option may be needed, depending on the MongoDB configuration. Do not commit real credentials in source code; load secrets from your deployment environment. Mongoose also documents connection options such as family and serverSelectionTimeoutMS for connection behavior, but select them for a diagnosed need rather than adding them blindly.
Choose a Mongoose query or an aggregation pipeline
Use a regular Mongoose query when its filter and query operations are sufficient. Choose aggregation when the result requires a pipeline, multiple transformation stages, or a shape assembled across stages. The behavior differs in ways that matter for types and results:
| Behavior | Mongoose query | Aggregation |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Ordinary filtering and query operations | Pipeline operations and staged result shaping |
| Value casting | Mongoose may cast query filters | Mongoose does not cast pipeline stages |
| Result type | Typically hydrated Mongoose documents | Plain JavaScript objects, not hydrated documents |
An aggregation pipeline must use values in the types stored in MongoDB. For instance, if the database stores an _id as an ObjectId, passing a string into an aggregation $match does not get automatically converted for you. Convert it explicitly:
Recommended Free Tools
import { Types } from "mongoose";
const id = "507f1f77bcf86cd799439011";
const rows = await UserModel.aggregate([
{ $match: { _id: new Types.ObjectId(id) } },
{ $project: { email: 1, displayName: 1 } },
]);
The sample identifier is illustrative; use an actual valid identifier from your application. Because aggregation results are plain objects, do not expect document instance methods, getters, or other behavior that depends on a hydrated Mongoose document.
What “Auth” can mean in this reference
Authentication architecture is not specified by this part’s title or the documented setup and backend patterns, so this guide does not treat sessions, JWTs, OAuth, or password-based login as interchangeable or select one by implication. Express documents express-session as installable session middleware and notes that its TypeScript declarations are community-maintained. That establishes package availability only; it does not by itself provide a complete authentication system or establish cookie settings, a production session store, password handling, or a token design. Choose and document those decisions for the application before adding an authentication implementation.
