There is no universal winner. In a 2026 smartphone-display experiment, an ultra-thin vapor chamber produced a lower junction temperature than a graphite sheet, and a stack that added two graphite layers to the chamber performed better still. MEMS cooling is a different class of solution: active, chip-integrated microfluidics that puts a fluid near the heat source. Its reported heat-flux capability cannot be ranked directly against a passive phone-display spreader.

The right choice depends on heat load and hotspot location, required temperature uniformity, available thickness and footprint, orientation, integration difficulty, and whether a pump, dielectric fluid, or other system hardware is acceptable.

What each cooling technology actually is

MEMS cooling: active microfluidics at the heat source

“MEMS cooling” is not one construction. The term covers microscale devices fabricated with microelectromechanical-systems techniques. The evidence here includes chip-integrated microchannels for two-phase cooling and a separate electrohydrodynamic device that moves a thin liquid film over a heated surface.

The 2026 Nature Electronics study used embedded, two-phase microfluidic cooling with dielectric fluid HFE-7100. A manifold distributes fluid through microscale passages close to chip hotspots; boiling and condensation carry heat away. This is an active thermal-management system even when the phase change itself provides much of the heat transport, because the device needs fluid delivery and an integrated flow path.

A 2003 study by Darabi and Ekula demonstrated another approach: a MEMS electrohydrodynamic device pumped a thin liquid film across a heated surface and removed heat through evaporation. Its reported cooling rate was 35 W/cm² at 19 °C superheat. That result illustrates a mechanism and test configuration, not a current product rating or a direct benchmark against a phone heat spreader.

Vapor chambers: sealed passive two-phase spreaders

A vapor chamber is a sealed, flat heat pipe. A working fluid evaporates over the hot region, vapor travels through the chamber, condenses over cooler areas, and a wick returns liquid by capillary action. The phase change spreads heat across a larger area without an external pump.

Because the chamber is a sealed component, it is passive from the device’s point of view, although its thermal behavior depends on wick design, internal structure, working fluid, orientation, contact pressure, and the size and position of the heat source. A chamber can reduce a hotspot by moving heat to a larger surface, but it cannot make heat disappear; the rest of the device still has to reject that heat.

Graphite sheets: solid-state in-plane spreading

Graphite thermal sheets are thin, passive layers that conduct heat rapidly along their plane. They are useful when a device has a broad area over which to distribute heat, but they do not provide the fluid-driven phase-change transport of a vapor chamber. Their benefit depends on in-plane conductivity, thickness, layer orientation, contact to the source and sink, and whether the surrounding structure can absorb and release the distributed heat.

A generic graphite sheet is not automatically a phone upgrade. Fit, adhesive interfaces, clearances, electromagnetic requirements, and the phone’s existing thermal stack determine whether an added layer helps or interferes.

What the measured evidence says

The strongest head-to-head evidence comes from a 2026 IEEE Semiconductor Thermal Measurement and Management Symposium study. The 2026 IEEE Semiconductor Thermal Measurement and Management Symposium study placed an ultra-thin vapor chamber and graphite-sheet spreaders in a smartphone-display stack, heated the display with a laser, and measured temperatures with infrared thermometers in constant-power and transient modes.

In that particular geometry and measurement method, the vapor chamber produced a much lower junction temperature than the graphite sheet. Adding two graphite layers to the vapor chamber reduced junction temperature further than the chamber alone. The result supports a hybrid stack for that type of display heat source; it does not establish that every vapor chamber beats every graphite sheet in every phone or power range.

Why a MEMS heat-flux result is not a phone-spreader result

The MEMS result places coolant in or immediately beside the chip package. That short thermal path is valuable when a tiny hotspot produces extreme local heat flux. The fluid can evaporate near the source before heat has to travel through a package, board, display or chassis.

A vapor chamber or graphite sheet in a smartphone is usually farther from the silicon. It spreads heat laterally through a thin device-level stack so the enclosure, display or frame can dissipate it. The design objective is often lower surface temperature, improved uniformity or a slower temperature rise rather than the maximum heat flux at a bare chip.

MEMS cooling therefore trades passive simplicity for proximity and capacity. It needs a compatible fluid path, manifold or pumping method, seals, controls and manufacturing integration. The passive spreaders need no circulating-fluid power source, but they are constrained by contact resistance, available area, thickness and the ability of the final enclosure to reject heat.

Vapor chambers in detail

Where they excel

  • Hotspot reduction: Evaporation at the source and condensation over a wider area can lower peak temperature.
  • Thin packaging: The 2019 study tested a 0.4 mm chamber. Murata and Cooler Master announced a jointly developed 200 μm vapor-chamber effort in 2021; that announcement is a company statement about development, not confirmation that a current replacement part is available.
  • No external pump: Once sealed, the chamber operates passively and can fit between existing layers when clearances permit.
  • Orientation tolerance within limits: The wick returns liquid, but gravity and orientation still affect performance. The 2019 capacity figure was measured horizontally, so it should not be assumed for vertical or inverted use.

Limits and failure modes

  • Capacity is finite: Exceeding the chamber’s design load can cause dry-out or a large temperature rise.
  • Contact matters: A gap, poorly compressed interface or uneven adhesive can erase much of the chamber’s advantage.
  • Shape matters: Bends, holes, narrow necks and an undersized condenser area limit vapor and liquid flow.
  • Uniformity is not the same as source temperature: A chamber can make a surface look more even while the chip junction remains too hot if the path into the chamber is resistive.
  • Orientation and mounting are part of the specification: A number measured in a horizontal laboratory fixture is not a guaranteed result in a handheld device at every angle.

Samsung engineer Kyungha Koo described the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge heat spreader in a Samsung Global Newsroom interview published April 14, 2016: “Unlike the conventional thermal spread sheet technology, the thermal spreader uses changes in the phases of water to radiate heat.” That statement describes Samsung’s implementation; it is not a claim about all vapor chambers. The same interview said that spreader had more than 50 times copper’s thermal conductivity, a company-specific figure that should not be generalized.

Graphite sheets in detail

Where they excel

  • Very low profile: Sheets can occupy little thickness where a rigid chamber will not fit.
  • Flexible coverage: They can cover broad, irregular areas and bridge several components when the bend radius and adhesive permit.
  • Simple passive construction: There is no working fluid, manifold or pump to integrate.
  • Layering: Multiple sheets can increase lateral spreading or couple a source to a larger chassis area, provided interfaces do not add excessive resistance.

Limits and failure modes

  • In-plane versus through-plane behavior: A sheet spreads heat sideways efficiently but may move heat poorly through its thickness. It needs a low-resistance path into and out of the sheet.
  • It can spread heat without lowering total device temperature: If the enclosure cannot reject the added heat, a larger warm area may replace a smaller hot spot.
  • Electrical and mechanical constraints: Insulation, shielding, abrasion, compression and adhesive compatibility must be checked in the complete assembly.
  • Model-specific fit: A generic sheet may obstruct connectors, cameras, batteries or displays, and the evidence does not establish a benefit for any particular phone model.

When the hybrid chamber-plus-graphite stack makes sense

The 2026 display experiment found that two graphite layers on top of the vapor chamber reduced junction temperature beyond the chamber alone. The likely design logic is complementary: the chamber transports heat from the localized source, while graphite enlarges the in-plane spreading area and couples the chamber to nearby surfaces.

A hybrid is most defensible when the source is localized, the chamber can be placed directly over it, and the graphite can reach a large, thermally useful area without blocking heat rejection. It is not automatically better: every added interface can introduce contact resistance, and extra layers consume thickness. Validate the stack under the same power, pressure, orientation and transient duty cycle the product will see.

How to choose for a real design

Choose MEMS microfluidics when

  • The heat source is a chip hotspot with very high local heat flux.
  • Chip or package redesign is possible, including microchannels and a fluid manifold.
  • A dielectric fluid such as HFE-7100, seals, flow control and manufacturing complexity are acceptable.
  • Peak junction temperature matters more than passive simplicity or a quick retrofit.

Choose a vapor chamber when

  • A passive, sealed spreader must move heat from a concentrated source to a larger chassis or display area.
  • The available cavity supports the chamber thickness and required footprint.
  • The design can provide reliable, low-resistance contact and account for operating orientation.
  • You need better hotspot control and response time than a thin solid sheet can provide.

Choose graphite when

  • Thickness, flexibility or a large irregular footprint dominates the design.
  • The heat load is moderate enough for lateral spreading rather than intense local boiling.
  • You need a passive layer that can be laminated around other components.
  • The enclosure has enough thermal mass or area to absorb and reject the distributed heat.

Choose a hybrid when

  • A localized source needs a low-resistance path into a chamber and a broad area is available for graphite spreading.
  • The additional layers fit without crushing the chamber or compromising other components.
  • You can test junction temperature, surface uniformity and transient response rather than relying on one temperature point.

A practical comparison and test procedure

  1. Define the heat source: Record total power in watts, hotspot area, duty cycle and the maximum allowable junction or surface temperature.
  2. Map the thermal path: List every interface from source to ambient, including die attach, package, adhesive, display, frame and enclosure. A spreader cannot compensate for a dominant resistance elsewhere.
  3. Set the geometry: Document thickness, footprint, bends, holes, contact pressure and orientation. These are test conditions, not incidental details.
  4. Test the baseline: Measure source temperature, several surface locations, temperature uniformity and time to equilibrium without the candidate spreader.
  5. Test each candidate under identical power: Keep the heat input, ambient conditions, mounting pressure and measurement method unchanged. Report whether the metric is junction, block or surface temperature.
  6. Include transient workloads: A component that performs well at steady state may respond slowly to short bursts, while a different design may reduce the initial peak.
  7. Test orientations: At minimum, evaluate the actual product orientation and any orientation in which the chamber could operate during use. Do not transfer a horizontal-only result to every posture.
  8. Check system burden: For MEMS, measure fluid delivery, pumping or flow-control requirements, seals and integration space. For passive parts, inspect adhesive, compression, electrical isolation and manufacturability.
  9. Report uncertainty: Infrared measurements depend on emissivity and line of sight; contact sensors add their own thermal mass and contact resistance. State the instrument and method with the result.

Common mistakes

Treating published numbers as a league table

A 1,570 W/cm² critical heat flux, a 35 W/cm² cooling rate and a 4.50 W chamber capacity answer different questions. They cannot identify a winner without matching geometry, metric and boundary conditions.

Confusing lower surface temperature with lower junction temperature

A sheet may flatten a surface temperature map while the silicon remains hot. Conversely, a chamber may lower the junction but transfer more heat to an enclosure that feels warmer. Measure both the source and the receiving surfaces.

Ignoring the heat sink after the spreader

Spreading heat increases the area available for rejection; it does not create a colder ambient. If the frame, display or air interface cannot reject the load, the entire assembly eventually approaches a higher temperature.

Adding layers without checking interfaces

Two graphite layers helped in the reported display experiment, but an extra adhesive layer, air gap or uneven compression can negate the gain in another assembly. Model and measure the complete stack.

Assuming a development announcement is a retail specification

The 200 μm figure announced by Murata and Cooler Master in 2021 describes their development effort. It is not evidence that a universally compatible 200 μm chamber is available for purchase or suitable for a particular phone.

The bottom line for each use case

Use case Most defensible starting point Reason
Extreme chip hotspot and package redesign MEMS microfluidic cooling Coolant can be brought close to the source, and the 2026 study demonstrated very high critical heat flux with a dielectric fluid.
Thin consumer device with a concentrated source Vapor chamber Passive phase-change spreading can lower hotspot temperature without an external pump; validate orientation and contact.
Very limited thickness or irregular coverage Graphite sheet Low-profile, flexible in-plane spreading is easier to package, provided the surrounding structure can reject the heat.
Localized source plus broad available chassis area Vapor chamber plus graphite The 2026 display test found the combined stack cooler than the chamber alone, subject to its specific geometry and interfaces.

For the literal question “which cools better,” the evidence supports a conditional answer: the tested vapor chamber cooled the smartphone-display junction better than the tested graphite sheet, and the hybrid stack did better than the chamber alone. MEMS cooling can handle a different, potentially much higher heat-flux regime, but only as an integrated active fluid system. Select by the thermal path and system constraints, then verify the choice with a controlled test rather than by comparing isolated headline numbers.
