Memecoins spread across blockchain networks because each chain offers a different mix of fees, capacity, trading venues, liquidity, and user access. When activity gathers around a token or a launch on one network, projects and traders may have reason to follow it there; bridges can also let users move assets between otherwise separate chains. No single factor explains the trend, and a token appearing on several networks does not mean its markets, risks, or value are unified.
Why are memecoins on different blockchains?
A blockchain is its own environment, with its own transaction rules, applications, and markets. Assets do not simply move between chains on their own. Users generally need a bridge or another cross-chain mechanism to transfer assets or information.
Networks compete for users by offering different trade-offs. A chain with lower transaction costs may be more practical for frequent, small swaps; another may attract users through its liquidity, trading venues, wallet support, or existing community. These factors can interact: a popular launch may draw traders to a chain, and the resulting activity may support more trading infrastructure and attention there. That feedback can reverse, too, if interest fades.
The Bank for International Settlements’ 2026 Working Paper 1335 presents a model of blockchain fragmentation, not proof that memecoins cause new chains to form. In the model, capacity constraints and congestion costs can price some users out of incumbent networks, creating an opening for chains with lower consensus thresholds. The paper’s authors note that its views do not necessarily represent the BIS or its member central banks.

How do fees and trading activity influence chain choice?
Lower transaction costs can make repeated, low-value trades more feasible, but fees alone do not explain where memecoin activity happens. Congestion, available liquidity, execution quality, and access through wallets, exchanges, and launch platforms also matter.
The Solana Foundation’s October 15, 2024 report compared network fees over the preceding six months. These are historical figures for that window, not current fee quotes or a forecast of what a transaction will cost during a busy period.
| Network | Total transaction fees in reported six-month period | Average transaction fee in report |
|---|---|---|
| Solana | $260 million | $0.02 |
| Ethereum | $752 million | $3.58 |
| TRON | $268 million | $0.22 |
| BNB Chain | $83 million | $0.13 |
| Base | $32 million | $0.05 |
The Foundation said Solana’s total fees reflected transaction volume rather than high fees per transaction. The figures illustrate that networks can have different cost profiles; they do not show that fees caused memecoin growth or rank chains by current suitability.

Why are memecoins moving to Solana and Base?
Solana and Base are among the networks represented in a cross-chain meme-coin study, but the available evidence does not establish a current migration trend or market-share ranking between them. The choice of chain depends on the particular token and trading venue, not just a network’s name or historical fee average.
A 21Shares report, State of Crypto, Issue 14, published in May 2025 with data through March 31, 2025, described memecoin swaps as a major part of Solana decentralized-exchange activity. It reported $30 billion in decentralized-exchange volume during the 48-hour trading surge around the $TRUMP launch. That is one specific episode, not a typical or current volume figure. The report also described questionable launches and a later slowdown, illustrating how quickly attention can turn.
Can the same memecoin exist on multiple networks?
A project can issue tokens on more than one chain, and a bridge can create or transfer a representation of an asset on another network. But matching names or symbols do not prove that two tokens are the same asset, backed in the same way, or equally tradeable. Each chain can have a separate contract and separate liquidity pools.

Before buying or transferring a token, check:
- Network: confirm the chain selected in your wallet and on the trading venue.
- Contract address: verify the exact token contract from a trustworthy project or venue source. A familiar ticker alone is not enough.
- Liquidity and execution: check the relevant pool’s depth and expected slippage. A displayed price may not represent a price at which you can trade a meaningful amount.
- Access and support: confirm that your wallet, exchange, and any intended bridge support that specific chain and token.
A token’s presence on several networks does not by itself establish interoperability, equal liquidity, or shared governance. A bridge moves an asset representation; it does not merge the separate contracts, markets, or risks.

Do blockchain bridges make a memecoin cross-chain?
Bridges provide a way to move assets or information between networks that do not natively communicate. Designs differ: some use wrapped assets, while others rely on external validators or other trust arrangements. The mechanism matters because it determines what users must trust and what can go wrong.
Ethereum.org’s bridge documentation, updated July 24, 2026, identifies smart-contract and technology risks, as well as censorship and custody risks in trusted designs. It recounts the Wormhole exploit, in which 120,000 wETH—valued at $325 million at the time—was stolen. That historical loss illustrates a bridge risk; it is not a current loss estimate or a measure of the likelihood of a future exploit.

Before using a bridge, understand its contract and validator assumptions, custody arrangements, pause controls, and recovery process. A token represented on another chain may depend on the bridge’s security and operations as well as the token contract and trading pool on that destination chain.

Multiple deployments and active trading can show that a token has reached users on more than one network. They do not establish lasting demand, durable value, or safety. A 2026 USENIX Security preprint studied 20,688 sampled meme coins across Solana, BNB Smart Chain, Ethereum, and Base. Its follow-up price observations were collected in mid-January 2025, so the results describe that sample and period—not every memecoin or the present market.
The study’s authors reported that 6,462 tokens, or 31.79% of the sample, had unchanged prices over a three-month observation and zero trading volume, suggesting inactivity rather than a stable, actively traded price. Among tokens with price decreases, the average loss was 38.42%; 946 tokens—13.63% of that declining group—lost more than 80%. Outcomes differed by chain. These sample findings are not a prediction for an individual token.

Interpret price data carefully: if a token’s pool is removed or trading dries up, a price source may stop updating. An unchanged displayed price in that situation can reflect illiquidity, not a dependable market value. The study’s sample and data collection methods also limit how broadly its results can be generalized.
How to assess a token deployed on more than one chain
There is no standardized current comparison in the cited sources that ranks networks across fees, liquidity, congestion, access, and bridge security. Evaluate the particular token and route you plan to use instead:
Quick Recap
- Compare transaction conditions: look at the fee and congestion conditions at the time you intend to trade; historical averages are not a guarantee.
- Inspect the actual market: check pool depth, likely slippage, and whether trading is active on the relevant chain.
- Verify identity: match the chain and contract address, not just the token name or symbol.
- Review the bridge: identify the bridge design, trust model, custody, and recovery arrangements before transferring assets.
- Separate activity from value: a launch, volume spike, or multi-chain presence is evidence of activity, not proof of sustainable demand.
