Melee combat has no single rulebook. A “combo” may be a weapon’s fixed attack string, a branch created by movement, or an equipped special move. Stamina may limit running and attacks, while another game may use posture instead. A parry is never a universal button press or timing window: it works only when that game gives your move and the incoming attack the appropriate properties.

Elden Ring and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice make the differences clear. Both reward reading enemy attacks and creating openings, but their resources, controls, and rewards are not interchangeable. Use the game’s HUD, tutorial and weapon descriptions as the authority, then practice one move and one enemy attack at a time.

What melee combat systems actually control

Three questions explain most melee systems:

  • How are attacks sequenced? Repeated normal attacks might produce a weapon-specific string, while heavy, jumping, running, rolling, backstep and crouching inputs select different animations.
  • What limits actions? A game can use stamina, posture, ammunition-like charges, cooldowns or no comparable resource at all.
  • How does defense create an opening? A successful parry, accumulated stance damage, an enemy’s recovery animation or a designed combo route may expose the target. The reward could be a critical attack, a posture finish, a guaranteed follow-up or simply time to attack safely.

Because these rules are local to each title, advice such as “always save half your stamina” or “parry on the flash” is incomplete unless it names the game, version and move being discussed.

How combos are built

Elden Ring: a moveset rather than one universal combo

Bandai Namco’s combat guide explains that most weapons have a basic pattern triggered by repeated normal attacks. The usual pattern is roughly three to five attacks, but the exact sequence belongs to the weapon. Heavy attacks may contain one or two attacks depending on weapon type. Those figures describe common patterns, not a promise that every weapon has the same number of hits.

Movement and stance inputs change the move selected. A running attack, jumping attack, rolling attack, backstep attack and crouching attack can all differ from a standing normal attack. Direction and the timing of an input can also alter an animation. Treat each weapon as a small vocabulary of attacks: learn which move starts a sequence, which move follows it and which branches leave you able to defend.

The guide also discusses input buffering and action commitment. An input can be accepted while another animation is finishing, but the current attack still commits your character for its animation. If you repeatedly mash the attack button, you may queue a hit that begins after an enemy’s counterattack. Deliberate inputs let you stop after a safe hit, reposition or reserve stamina for defense.

Sekiro: special moves add routes to a sequence

In Sekiro, the official mechanics guide describes Combat Arts as greater attack moves that can augment combos. You must equip a Combat Art before using it, and some Arts consume Spirit Emblems. That makes a Combat Art different from an ordinary weapon string: it is an equipped route with its own resource rule, not a universal extra hit that every player always has available.

When comparing a base attack sequence with a special move, ask whether the move costs a resource, whether it can be interrupted, and what situation it is intended to solve. A special attack that spends Spirit Emblems may be valuable for a particular opening but inappropriate when you need those emblems for another tool.

A reliable way to learn any moveset

  1. Choose one weapon or equipped attack and record its normal, heavy, movement and jumping options from the in-game descriptions or a safe practice area.
  2. Test one input at a time. Identify the first hit, the final hit and the point at which your character can move or guard again.
  3. Try the same sequence against an enemy that survives it. Watch whether the enemy staggers, blocks, retreats or immediately counters.
  4. Stop the sequence early and compare the recovery animation. The shortest string is not automatically best; the useful string is the one that leaves you safe for the enemy’s next action.
  5. Add a special move only after you understand the ordinary route. Note its resource cost and whether it changes the distance or timing of the exchange.

Stamina is an action budget in Elden Ring

In Elden Ring, Bandai Namco says the stamina gauge regenerates over time. When it reaches zero, you cannot perform further actions that consume stamina. Stamina is not consumed while you are out of combat. The guide gives running and jumping as examples of actions with stamina costs.

This makes stamina a budget for a live exchange rather than a permanent penalty. Spending the entire bar on an attack sequence can leave you unable to perform a stamina-consuming defensive action when the enemy responds. The practical planning rule is simple: before committing to another hit, look at the gauge and decide whether you need reserve for movement, a guard or another action in the next few seconds. That is a decision aid for Elden Ring, not a law shared by every melee game.

Jumping has an offensive and defensive role in the same guide. A jump can avoid some attacks, and a jumping attack can inflict more stance damage. The value depends on the incoming attack, your weapon and your remaining stamina; do not assume that jumping is always safer than guarding or moving away.

What stamina does not tell you

  • It does not tell you whether an attack can be parried. Parry eligibility is a rule attached to the move and enemy.
  • It does not measure stance or posture. A full stamina bar does not mean an enemy is close to a stance break.
  • It does not establish a combo’s hit count. Weapon animations determine the sequence.
  • It does not prove that another title uses the same economy. Sekiro’s official guide emphasizes posture and Combat Arts, so do not transfer Elden Ring stamina advice to it.

Parrying creates openings only under the game’s rules

The Elden Ring setup

In Elden Ring, the starter guide instructs you to equip a shield with the parry skill and use that skill’s input to repel enemy melee attacks. A successful parry can create a critical-hit opportunity. The requirement is therefore more specific than “press parry when an attack arrives”: the shield must have the skill, the incoming move must be an eligible melee attack, and your timing must match that move.

  • Precise control: features Hall joysticks and Hall triggers for a comfortable feeling, long service life and improved game accuracy.
  • Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.
  • Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
  • Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.

Eligibility is not universal. The advanced guide says some enemies cannot be parried, and the starter guide warns that some enemies will not have their stance broken by one parry. In the guide’s exact wording, “Some enemies won’t have their stance broken with a single parry.” A failed attempt may therefore mean incorrect timing, an ineligible attack, an enemy that requires repeated parries or a parry that did not connect with the relevant part of the animation.

What happens after a successful parry

Successful parries can leave many enemies exposed to a critical attack. Some bosses may require multiple successful parries before the critical opening appears. A critical opening can also come from accumulated stance damage rather than a single parry. Guard counters, charged heavy attacks and jumping heavy attacks are among the actions the combat guide identifies as contributors to stance damage.

Parry, stance break and critical hit describe different points in that chain:

Term Meaning in the Elden Ring example What to look for
Parry A defensive skill input that can repel an eligible melee attack. The enemy attack and your shield skill must both support it.
Stance damage Accumulated pressure that weakens an enemy’s stance. Heavy, jumping, guard-counter and other attacks can contribute.
Stance break The enemy becomes vulnerable after enough stance damage or the required parry sequence. A visible opening for a critical attack.
Critical attack The high-damage follow-up available during the opening. Position yourself correctly and use the game’s critical input.

These terms are related, but they are not synonyms. A parry can contribute to an opening; it does not guarantee that every enemy immediately enters a stance break.

Why a parry fails, and how to diagnose it

Do not begin by changing your timing at random. Identify which rule failed.

You used the wrong equipment or input

Check that the shield actually has the parry skill equipped and that you activated the skill rather than a normal guard or attack. Practice the skill input away from an enemy so the animation is familiar.

The attack was not eligible

Some Elden Ring enemies and attacks cannot be parried. A large weapon, projectile or unusual attack animation is not evidence of eligibility. Test a clearly readable melee swing from a smaller enemy first, then confirm whether the difficult enemy has a different rule.

Your timing was aimed at the wrong part of the animation

Enemy attacks have a tell, a travel phase and a contact or recovery phase. Watch the arm, weapon or body motion that actually reaches you rather than reacting to the first visual flash. The official material does not provide a universal frame count or one timing window for all enemies, so learn each attack’s tell in the game itself.

One parry was not enough

The guide explicitly notes that some enemies do not have their stance broken by a single parry, and some bosses may need multiple successful parries. If you see a successful deflection but no critical opening, continue the encounter according to that enemy’s rule instead of assuming the mechanic failed.

You were out of position for the critical

A parry can create the opening without placing you at the exact position needed for the critical attack. After the deflection, move to the enemy’s vulnerable side and use the critical input when the opening is visibly available.

Stance in Elden Ring and posture in Sekiro

FromSoftware director Hidetaka Miyazaki described Elden Ring’s stance-break mechanic as similar to Sekiro’s posture system, not identical. The comparison is useful because both games reward sustained pressure and defensive precision, but their controls and resources differ.

Combat question Elden Ring Sekiro
Primary pressure concept Stance damage can accumulate until a stance break and critical opening. Posture is a central part of the official mechanics explanation.
Defensive example A shield with the parry skill can repel eligible melee attacks. Use the defensive mechanics and timing defined by Sekiro’s own system; do not assume Elden Ring’s shield-parry rules apply.
Special attack route Weapon moveset branches through normal, heavy and movement attacks. Equipped Combat Arts augment combos; some consume Spirit Emblems.
Resource warning Stamina regenerates and reaches zero, preventing further stamina-consuming actions; it is not consumed out of combat. The cited guide emphasizes posture and Spirit Emblems for some Combat Arts, not Elden Ring’s stamina economy.
Opening reward A critical attack after a qualifying parry sequence or stance break. The opening and finishing route follow Sekiro’s posture and enemy rules.

The safest comparison method is to ask five questions for each game: What resource is being spent? What defensive action is available? How is an opening created? What does the opening reward? How are attack sequences built? Similar vocabulary does not make the answers identical.

A practical learning routine for combos, stamina and parries

  1. Read the HUD and tutorial first. Identify the gauge or icon that changes when you attack, run, jump, guard or use a special move. If the game does not show stamina, do not invent a stamina rule.
  2. Select one test enemy. Choose an opponent whose melee attack has a clear wind-up. Avoid learning timing from a boss with several attack variants until the basic interaction is understood.
  3. Map one ordinary string. Perform normal attacks repeatedly, then test heavy and movement attacks separately. Record where the animation commits and where you can retreat.
  4. Measure the defensive cost. In Elden Ring, watch stamina before and after running, jumping and your chosen attack. Leave enough budget for the response you intend to make; treat this as planning, not a universal formula.
  5. Test parry eligibility. Equip the required skill, use the same enemy swing repeatedly and change only your timing. If no timing works, investigate whether the attack or enemy is ineligible before changing equipment.
  6. Confirm the reward. After a successful parry or enough stance pressure, look for the actual critical opening. If it does not appear, the enemy may require multiple parries or more accumulated damage.
  7. Add complexity gradually. Introduce a jumping heavy attack, guard counter or equipped Combat Art only after the base interaction is reliable. Each new move changes timing, resource use or distance.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating “combo” as a fixed number. Three to five normal attacks is a typical Elden Ring pattern, not a genre-wide rule and not a guarantee for every weapon.
  • Confusing a parry with a block. A sustained guard reduces or absorbs an attack according to the game’s rules; a parry is a timed skill interaction that may create a special opening.
  • Calling every opening a stance break. An enemy can be exposed by recovery, a parry sequence or accumulated stance damage. Use the term that matches what actually happened.
  • Copying timing from another game. Even games made by the same studio can use different controls, resources and eligibility rules.
  • Spending the whole action budget on offense. In Elden Ring, stamina reaches zero and blocks further stamina-consuming actions. In any other game, first verify that an equivalent limitation exists.
  • Assuming a failed parry is a player-timing problem. Check equipment, enemy eligibility, required repetitions and positioning before practicing faster reactions.

How to compare any two melee systems

Use this checklist when moving between games or explaining a new one:

Axis Question to answer
Resource model Does the game spend stamina, posture, special-move charges or nothing comparable?
Defense Are parry, sustained guard, dodge, movement or several options available?
Opening trigger Does a timed deflection, accumulated stance damage, enemy recovery or a combo route create vulnerability?
Opening reward Is the reward a critical attack, posture finish, guaranteed follow-up or merely a safe chance to resume offense?
Sequence structure Are attacks repeated base strings, weapon-specific branches, movement attacks or equipped special moves?
Failure condition Does missing the timing cost health, resource, position or only an opportunity?

This framework keeps explanations accurate without turning one game’s mechanic into a supposed law of melee combat.
