The original Mego Spider-Man is an 8-inch figure from the World’s Greatest Super Heroes line, introduced circa 1973–74. Modern Mego-branded Spider-Man sets deliberately recreate that scale, packaging style and character lineup, but their 26-point bodies, removable silkscreen costumes and replica accessories are later construction. A Diamond Select Spider-Man from 2015 is another retro-styled 8-inch figure, not a Mego Corporation reissue.
For collectors, the reliable approach is to identify the manufacturer first, then compare body joints, costume construction, accessories, markings, packaging and completeness. No single feature—especially a box, a copyright date or metal rivets—proves that a figure is original.
What counts as an original Mego Spider-Man?
An original is a Spider-Man produced by Mego Corporation for its 8-inch World’s Greatest Super Heroes (WGSH) line in the early 1970s. The line was built around Action Jackson bodies fitted with new heads and familiar licensed costumes. Spider-Man belongs to that first-generation Mego product family, alongside characters such as Captain America and Tarzan.

“Mego-style” is broader than “Mego.” Other manufacturers used the same general 8-inch format, cloth-costume look and retro presentation. Those figures can be legitimate collectibles, but they should not be listed or priced as Mego Corporation products. The 2015 Diamond Select Spider-Man is the clearest example: it uses a retro presentation and the approximate scale, yet it is a Diamond Select release.

Modern Mego-branded sets occupy a third category. They are officially branded Mego products made decades after the original line. Their vintage-style boxes and character designs are intentional throwbacks, not evidence that the figures were manufactured in the 1970s.
Why the original date is listed as circa 1973–74
Published histories give two dates for Spider-Man’s addition to the WGSH line. Mego Museum’s WGSH chronology states that Spider-Man, Captain America and Tarzan were added for the fall 1973 season. Marty Abrams’s company history says Mego added Spider-Man in 1974.
The available accounts do not establish whether the difference reflects an announcement date, a catalog date or the timing of retail distribution. Until a dated catalog or package resolves that distinction, “circa 1973–74” is the most accurate collector-friendly description. It is safer than asserting one year as certain.

Its chronology also records retailer-oriented window boxes and Kresge cards during the early additions, followed by a change from window boxes to blister cards in 1977. Packaging therefore helps place a figure within the line’s era, but it cannot authenticate a loose figure by itself.
Marty Abrams’s retrospective company history describes the 8-inch licensed Marvel and DC figures as a major part of Mego’s business and dates the company’s closure to 1982. Those statements are company history rather than independently audited production statistics.

How the original 1970s Mego figure fits the WGSH line
Action Jackson roots and the 8-inch format
Mego’s strategy was economical and recognizable: reuse an existing 8-inch body, create a character-specific head and add a familiar costume. That shared architecture is why original WGSH figures have a family resemblance even when their characters differ. Spider-Man is not a separately engineered modern action figure; he is a licensed character interpreted through the body system Mego was already using.

The 8-inch measurement is approximate. Vintage cloth, body posture and the way a figure is measured can produce small differences. Treat scale as a useful identity check, not a precision authentication test.
Type I and Type II bodies
Mego Museum’s body guide identifies two broad body constructions. Type I bodies use metal-rivet joints. Type II bodies use plastic joints. Both are relevant to vintage collecting, and a boxed figure can use either construction. That makes the rule “all originals have metal rivets” incorrect.
Body and head markings also need context. A copyright date molded into a body may predate the head sculpt installed on it, so different dates on those parts are not automatically proof of a replacement or counterfeit. Use the markings as evidence to weigh with the rest of the figure.
Costume, accessories and completeness
A loose original can be authentic and still incomplete. Check the costume for missing or replaced elements, inspect the hands and footwear, and compare every accessory with the issue being offered. A seller should identify reproduction parts rather than presenting them as original. Mego Museum’s collector guidance emphasizes that buyers and sellers should distinguish originals from reproductions and label them honestly.

Packaging as an era clue
Early WGSH additions were associated with window boxes and Kresge cards in Mego Museum’s chronology. The same timeline records a move to blister cards in 1977. A package that matches the expected era supports a listing, while an implausible package should prompt questions. Neither style is conclusive on its own because packaging can be separated from figures, swapped, reproduced or paired with a different issue.
What the modern Mego-branded Spider-Man sets contain
Spider-Man, Green Goblin, Lizard and Electro
One Disney Store listing describes a four-figure set containing Spider-Man, Green Goblin, Lizard and Electro. The figures are approximately 8 inches tall and use vintage-style Mego packaging. The listing specifies removable silkscreen costumes, replica vintage accessories and 26 articulation points for the figures. It identifies the set as a Disney Store exclusive. The page showed the set out of stock when accessed, so availability should be checked rather than assumed.
These specifications make the set easy to recognize as a modern Mego-branded product, but they do not make it a 1970s original. The articulation count and removable costume construction are modern product attributes.
Symbiote Spider-Man, Doctor Octopus, Rhino and Mysterio
A second Disney Store listing covers a set with Symbiote Spider-Man, Doctor Octopus, Rhino and Mysterio. It likewise describes approximately 8-inch figures, vintage-style packaging, replica accessories and 26 articulation points. The listing showed this set out of stock when accessed, and both its price and stock status are subject to change.
The symbiote version is especially important in listings because a black Spider-Man costume can be mistaken for a custom, a replacement outfit or another manufacturer’s figure when photographs are poor. The character lineup, packaging and manufacturer identification should be checked together.
How modern construction differs from a vintage body
The modern listings describe 26 articulation points and removable silkscreen costumes. Those details indicate a more pose-oriented product specification than the basic vintage body descriptions. They should not be treated as a direct continuation of Type I or Type II construction, and packaging that imitates a vintage box does not change the manufacturing date.

The 2015 Diamond Select figure is a separate product
Hot Toys Japan’s product archive documents Diamond Select’s Legendary Marvel Super Heroes #001 Spider-Man from 2015. It measures approximately 20 cm, or 8 inches, and has 13 articulation points. The design uses the early circular chest-logo style and includes alternate Peter Parker and modern-costume components, along with a camera and newspaper.
Its scale and retro styling make it a natural comparison point for Mego collectors, but the manufacturer is Diamond Select, not Mego Corporation. A listing should name Diamond Select prominently. Calling it a Mego reissue would conflate a licensed retro figure from another company with a Mego-branded product.
How to tell whether a listing is original, modern or another manufacturer
Collectors often ask, “How do I tell if it’s the reissue or the original?” The answer is a sequence of checks rather than one magic feature.
- Identify the manufacturer. Read the package, card, molded markings and seller description for Mego Corporation, a modern Mego-branded release or another manufacturer such as Diamond Select. If the manufacturer is not visible, ask for a close photograph.
- Place the product in a time range. An original Spider-Man belongs to the circa 1973–74 WGSH introduction, while blister-card packaging points to the later 1970s packaging phase rather than the earliest window-box presentation. A modern box cannot turn a later figure into a vintage one.
- Inspect the joints. Look for metal-rivet or plastic-joint construction, keeping both Type I and Type II bodies in consideration. Do not reject a boxed original solely because it lacks metal rivets.
- Compare head and body markings. Record copyright dates and molded details separately. Different dates can occur because the body and head were produced at different times.
- Examine the costume seams and material. Ask whether the costume is original, removable, replaced or reproduced. Modern listings specifically describe removable silkscreen costumes; that construction should not be assumed to match a vintage outfit.
- Inventory the accessories. Request a written list of everything included. For modern sets, replica vintage accessories are part of the advertised contents. For vintage figures, missing or substituted pieces affect completeness.
- Assess the package independently. Check whether the card or box belongs with the character and issue. Window boxes, Kresge cards and later blister cards are useful era clues, but packaging can be swapped or reproduced.
- Request disclosure of repairs and reproductions. Mego Museum’s guidance is explicit that reproduction parts should be identified honestly. A seller who will not disclose replacements leaves a significant authenticity and completeness risk.
Photographs should cover the front and back of the figure, both sides of the head, body and joint areas, costume seams, all accessories, markings, card or box and any damaged or repaired areas. Clear images let a buyer compare evidence instead of relying on a title such as “original” or “reissue.”

Match condition before comparing price
Do not compare the asking price of a complete modern multipack with the price of a loose vintage Spider-Man. The modern listing represents several figures, packaging and accessories. A vintage listing may contain one figure with missing parts, or a boxed example with a very different condition profile. Compare like with like: single figure to single figure, complete to complete, boxed to boxed, and the same geographic market where possible.
Separate availability from desirability
The documented Disney Store pages showed both modern sets out of stock when accessed. That is a snapshot, not a permanent discontinuation notice. It also does not establish a current secondary-market price. Treat stock status as volatile and ask whether a seller is offering an original retail item, a later resale or a different release entirely.

Read “vintage-style” literally
“Vintage-style packaging” describes the visual treatment. It does not claim vintage manufacture. The same applies to “retro,” “classic,” or “reissue” in a seller title. Confirm the product identity and specifications before accepting the wording as an authentication statement.
Which version suits which collector?
Choose an original Mego when historical authenticity is the priority
Look for a figure that can be documented as a Mego Corporation WGSH product, with a plausible body, markings, costume and accessory combination. Decide in advance whether you want a loose example for display or a boxed example with period packaging. In either case, require disclosure of reproductions and repairs.
Choose a modern Mego set for coordinated display
The modern four-packs provide matching approximately 8-inch figures, vintage-style packaging and replica accessories. Their 26-point articulation makes them a distinct modern format. They are appropriate when you want a consistent display set without representing it as a surviving 1970s release.

A practical cataloging record for every figure
Whether you collect loose figures or sealed packages, record the information that prevents future confusion:
- Manufacturer and product name exactly as printed.
- Approximate release period and the evidence supporting it.
- Body type or visible joint construction.
- Head and body markings, recorded separately.
- Costume description, including whether it is removable, replaced or reproduced.
- Accessory list and any missing pieces.
- Package style, condition and whether the package is original to the figure.
- Seller disclosures about restoration, repairs or replacement parts.
- Photographs of the figure, markings, joints, costume, accessories and packaging.
This record is more useful than a broad label such as “old Mego” because it preserves the evidence needed to distinguish an original, a modern Mego release and a Mego-style product from another manufacturer.
Verdict
An original Mego Spider-Man is a circa 1973–74 8-inch WGSH figure whose identity rests on the Mego Corporation product history and a combination of body, costume, accessory and packaging evidence. Modern Mego sets recreate the look with approximately 8-inch figures, 26 articulation points, removable silkscreen costumes and replica accessories. Diamond Select’s 2015 figure is a separate 8-inch retro product with 13 articulation points. For a confident purchase, verify the manufacturer first, treat packaging and markings as clues rather than proof, and insist on honest disclosure of reproduction or replacement parts.
