Best Friendship is the social-matching idea behind MegaPals, a word-association game in The Jackbox Party Pack 12. Players try to give matching responses, and the pair with the most unique matches across the game becomes the MegaPals. That is a game score—not a scientific measure of who is truly closest outside the game.
What is MegaPals in Jackbox Party Pack 12?
MegaPals asks players to respond to a word prompt and see whether their answers converge. Its design draws on Mind Meld, a classic word-association game: players receive a word and try to produce the same response as someone else. Game Director Alina Constantin says the goal was to reward both group-thinking and individual creativity. In her October 2, 2026 Xbox Wire feature, she describes the game’s matching and voting systems.

Matching is only part of the activity. When answers do not match, players vote on hot takes built from the unmatched words; those votes help determine the next starter. Answers can also earn points when the game selects them as prompts for other players to riff on.
How does MegaPals decide who are the best friends?
The final MegaPals pair is the pair with the most unique matches over the course of the game. The result follows the game’s scoring rules, which also recognize other match-related events such as answers chosen as prompts. It is therefore an outcome of a particular session and its scoring—not evidence that two players have a deeper or more durable friendship.

In an eight-player configuration, Constantin says there are 28 possible winning pairs. That is the number of possible player pairings in that game setup, not a statistic about real-world relationships.
What does the friendship map show?
Between rounds, a minimap pairs each player with the person they have scored highest with so far and revisits words associated with that connection. Constantin calls it a “relationship chart” for who players are closest to “at this point in time.” In context, this describes the game’s current scoring and presentation; it is not a scientifically validated closeness measure.
The interface also makes other players’ submissions visible in real time, giving the group clues about each other’s “wavelengths.” A dynamic likes screen surfaces words that rise through voting, creating a moment for players to react and discuss what the group favors.
Why make matching and voting visible?
The mechanics turn social inference into part of the entertainment. Players can use the map to notice who is currently matching with them, adjust to that person’s style, or try to build a connection with another high-scoring player. That kind of playful pandering adds strategy and comedy: a player can aim to match naturally, or deliberately adapt to someone else’s associations.

As Constantin puts it, “We wanted to reward group-think and individual creativity equally.” The tension is useful to the design: answers need to be distinctive enough to feel personal, but familiar enough that someone else may land on the same idea.

No evidence in Jackbox’s feature establishes MegaPals as a psychological test or validates its score against real friendship. It explains the game’s mechanics and design intent, not an independent study. Treat the map and winning pair as playful snapshots of how answers aligned in one session—not a verdict on relationships beyond the game.
When was The Jackbox Party Pack 12 announced to launch?
Jackbox announced an October 15, 2026 launch for PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Apple TV, iPad, and the Mac App Store, with an announced price of $29.99. These were announced details current as of October 7, 2026, not a guarantee of present availability or price. Nintendo’s official store page also lists October 15, 2026 as the Switch release date.
