Short answer: Mega Sableye is the bulkiest option in this comparison, but it is not a serious raid attacker today. Its 151 Attack and 216 Defense give it staying power, while its low damage places it in C-tier in Pokémon GO Hub’s September 2026 analysis. Use Mega Gengar or Mega Banette for Ghost damage, and Mega Houndoom or Mega Absol for Dark damage. Choose among them by looking at the boss’s moves, your team’s survival needs, the exact moveset, and the Mega-level or catch bonuses you want—not by DPS alone.

What Mega Sableye is good at—and what it is not

Mega Sableye is a Dark/Ghost-type Mega Evolution with an unusually defensive stat profile. Pokémon GO Hub’s table, last updated September 5, 2026, lists 151 Attack, 216 Defense, 137 HP and a maximum CP of 2,196. Those numbers explain its identity: it can remain on the field longer than many high-DPS Megas, but it does not deal enough damage to justify it as a primary raid attacker.

The same analysis places Mega Sableye in C-tier and says its damage output is too low for serious raiding. That does not make the form useless. A Mega can contribute a team damage boost, generate catch bonuses for matching types and advance its Mega Level. Mega Sableye can therefore be a collection, progression or matchup-specific choice even when another Mega is the better damage dealer.

The most important distinction is between damage dealt and time alive. A fragile attacker can post excellent DPS while fainting quickly; a durable one can keep a Mega bonus active but contribute less personal damage. The right choice depends on the raid boss, its charged moves, your party’s other attackers and whether you value Dark, Ghost or both of Sableye’s types for post-raid catches.

Current comparison at a glance

The figures below come from Pokémon GO Hub’s 2026 comparison and tier-list articles. They are simulator-style estimates for the listed movesets, not universal results for every raid. Changing moves, dodging, boss stats or party composition can change the outcome.

Mega Typing Attack Defense HP Max CP Example moveset Reported raid result Practical reading
Mega Sableye Dark/Ghost 151 216 137 2,196 Not stated in the cited comparison Not stated as a competitive DPS line; C-tier Very bulky, but too slow for serious raid damage
Mega Gengar Ghost/Poison 349 199 155 4,902 Lick / Shadow Ball 22.39 DPS; 469.0 TDO Top Ghost damage, with fragility and a Poison-based Psychic weakness
Mega Banette Ghost 312 160 162 4,063 Shadow Claw / Shadow Ball 19.45 DPS; 346.5 TDO Strong Ghost option; less exposed to the Psychic weakness that affects Gengar
Mega Houndoom Dark/Fire Not stated in the cited table Not stated in the cited table Not stated in the cited table Not stated in the cited table Snarl / Dark Pulse+ 23.04 DPS; 544.2 TDO Leading Dark comparison in the cited game state, with move availability affecting rankings
Mega Absol Dark Not stated in the cited table Not stated in the cited table Not stated in the cited table Not stated in the cited table Snarl / Brutal Swing Described as high-DPS, but no single ranking should ignore its low bulk Damage-focused and fragile; dodging and relobby risk matter

Ghost attackers: Mega Gengar or Mega Banette?

Mega Gengar: the damage-first Ghost Mega

Mega Gengar is the clear Ghost damage specialist in the cited comparison. With Lick and Shadow Ball, it is reported at 22.39 DPS and 469.0 total damage output (TDO). Its 349 Attack and 4,902 maximum CP in the September 2026 tier list explain why it is treated as a top Ghost attacker.

That damage comes with meaningful risks. Mega Gengar is Ghost/Poison, and the Poison typing gives it a weakness to Psychic attacks. It is also fragile compared with a defensive Mega such as Sableye. If a raid boss has a strong Psychic charged move, Mega Gengar may faint early, forcing a relobby or removing its Mega contribution sooner than its headline DPS suggests.

Use Mega Gengar when the boss is vulnerable to Ghost, its moveset does not punish the Poison subtyping too severely, and your group benefits from maximizing immediate damage. Dodging can preserve its value, but dodging changes effective DPS and requires active play.

Mega Banette: lower damage, simpler typing

Mega Banette’s Shadow Claw and Shadow Ball line is reported at 19.45 DPS and 346.5 TDO. Its 312 Attack, 160 Defense, 162 HP and 4,063 maximum CP are lower offensively than Gengar’s in the cited table, and the analysis describes it as outclassed by Mega Gengar for most Ghost raids.

Banette is pure Ghost, so it does not inherit Gengar’s Poison-based Psychic weakness. That can make it a more comfortable choice when the boss’s moves threaten Gengar specifically. The trade-off is lower modeled damage and less total damage in the cited comparison.

Choose Mega Banette when you need a Ghost Mega but expect Gengar’s typing to be punished, or when your available Banette is substantially better powered. A well-built, surviving Banette can be more useful than a theoretically stronger attacker that repeatedly faints.

Dark attackers: Mega Houndoom or Mega Absol?

Mega Houndoom: balanced Dark/Fire raid utility

The cited September 2026 Dark comparison uses Snarl and Dark Pulse+ for Mega Houndoom and reports 23.04 DPS and 544.2 TDO. The analysis describes it as a leading Dark attacker in the game state covered by that article. Its Dark/Fire typing gives it a different set of resistances and weaknesses from both Sableye and the pure-Dark Absol.

Those numbers are conditional. The source notes that move availability and additional Charged Attack mechanics influence the ranking. Confirm that your Houndoom has the relevant moves before applying the comparison to a raid team. A different charged move, event availability or future balance change can invalidate a direct numerical ranking.

Houndoom is the practical Dark choice when you want high modeled damage without relying on the most fragile option, or when its Fire typing is favorable against the boss’s attacks. It is not automatically superior in every matchup: a boss’s coverage can make the secondary typing a liability.

Mega Absol: high damage with a narrow margin for error

Mega Absol is recommended with Snarl and Brutal Swing in the current analysis. Pokémon GO Hub describes it as a high-DPS Dark attacker but emphasizes its low bulk and technical play. The published comparison does not establish a single universal ranking that should be quoted without that survival caveat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Absol’s advantage is straightforward: it focuses on Dark damage and can reward a player who dodges effectively. Its disadvantage is equally important: incoming charged moves can remove it quickly. Early fainting lowers total damage, may require a relobby and can shorten the period in which the Mega damage boost helps the group.

Use Mega Absol when the boss is safely favorable to Dark, you can manage incoming attacks and your team needs burst damage. Use Houndoom instead when staying power, easier execution or a more forgiving lineup matters more than peak output.

Why Mega Sableye’s bulk rarely makes up for its damage

Mega Sableye’s 216 Defense is the highest defensive figure listed among these five comparisons, but its 151 Attack is dramatically lower than Gengar’s 349, Banette’s 312 and the attack-focused Dark Megas. Defense helps Sableye remain active; it does not turn low attack into competitive raid damage.

In a raid, a Mega also has a team-level role. While active, it can boost attacks of matching types, so a durable Mega may preserve that boost longer. However, the cited tier analysis still concludes that Sableye’s personal damage is too low for serious raiding. Bringing it solely to avoid fainting usually sacrifices more damage than its extra time alive recovers.

Sableye’s dual Dark/Ghost typing can matter for catch bonuses and for selecting a Mega that supports either damage type. That utility is separate from its ranking as an attacker. Treat it as a progression or bonus-management choice rather than presenting it as an alternative to Gengar, Banette, Houndoom or Absol for damage.

How to choose for a specific raid

  1. Identify the boss’s weakness. Use a Ghost Mega against a boss weak to Ghost and a Dark Mega against one weak to Dark. Do not assume dual typing makes Sableye equally effective in both roles.
  2. Read the boss’s charged moves. A super-effective move against your Mega’s secondary typing can erase a nominal DPS advantage. Psychic coverage is especially relevant to Mega Gengar because of its Poison subtyping.
  3. Decide whether the team needs damage or endurance. For a small group racing the clock, Gengar, Houndoom or Absol may be preferable. For a newer group where repeated fainting causes relobbies, a more durable surviving lineup can produce better practical results.
  4. Verify the exact moveset. The cited figures are tied to Lick/Shadow Ball, Shadow Claw/Shadow Ball, Snarl/Dark Pulse+ and Snarl/Brutal Swing. A different fast or charged move changes the comparison.
  5. Account for Mega availability. Only one Mega-Evolved Pokémon can be active for a Trainer at a time. Select the Mega whose type bonus benefits the raid team and whose catch bonus you want after the battle.
  6. Check Mega Level and energy. Repeatedly Mega Evolving the same Pokémon raises its Mega Level. Higher Mega Levels provide bonuses while that Pokémon is Mega-Evolved, including catch-related bonuses for Pokémon sharing its type.
  7. Consider relobby risk. A fragile Mega that faints before the group’s key damage window may be worse in practice than its simulator DPS suggests. Dodging can help, but it requires attention and changes the effective output.

What Mega Evolution rules change about the decision

Mega Evolution is temporary and improves battle performance. Niantic’s official support guidance states: “Trainers can only have one Mega-Evolved Pokémon active at a time.” That single-active-Mega limit turns the choice into a team decision, not merely a question of which individual Pokémon has the highest attack.

Repeated Mega Evolutions raise an individual Pokémon’s Mega Level. Mega Levels provide bonuses during the Mega Evolution, including catch bonuses for Pokémon of the same type. A player may therefore choose Sableye for Dark/Ghost catch utility or progression even when another Mega is selected for raid damage.

For example, a Ghost-focused raid team may use Mega Gengar for damage and reserve Mega Sableye’s energy for a later catch-focused session. Conversely, a player building Mega Level progress on Sableye may accept lower raid damage in an easy lobby where the clock is not a concern. The game’s one-Mega limit means that the bonus you gain from one form is the opportunity cost of not activating another.

During the event, Mega Sableye is scheduled to receive access to Super Max progression and the charged move Night Shade+. The official announcement lists Night Shade+ at 55 power in Trainer Battles and 160 power in Raid Battles, with power increasing according to Mega Level.

Trainers must first reach Max and then spend Mega Energy to power Sableye up to Super Max. This progression may make Sableye more attractive for long-term investment, but it does not retroactively make the September 2026 raid ranking a high-DPS recommendation. Recheck the live move data, event rules and Mega-level effects after the event begins before treating Night Shade+ as a new raid standard.

Should you power up Absol if you already have a level-50 Mega Gengar?

This is a resource-allocation question rather than a universal yes-or-no verdict. A level-50 Mega Gengar already covers the Ghost role with the cited 22.39 DPS and 469.0 TDO Lick/Shadow Ball line. Powering Mega Absol can still add value when you need a dedicated Dark attacker, want a Dark Mega for catch bonuses or regularly face bosses where Dark is the better weakness.

Do not power Absol solely because a high-DPS label appears in a comparison. Its low bulk means that the practical result depends on dodging, the boss’s charged moves and whether fainting causes a relobby. Mega Houndoom may be a more forgiving Dark investment when its moves and typing fit the matchup. If your raids are already comfortably winning and you have no Dark-specific use, the resources may be better directed toward Mega Level progress, required moves or a matchup your current roster lacks.

Recommended picks by situation

Situation Best starting choice Why
Maximum Ghost damage against a suitable boss Mega Gengar Highest cited Ghost DPS and TDO among the Ghost options, provided its Poison typing is not heavily punished.
Ghost damage when Psychic coverage threatens Gengar Mega Banette Pure Ghost typing avoids Gengar’s Poison-based Psychic weakness, at the cost of lower cited damage.
Dark damage with strong modeled output and more endurance than Absol Mega Houndoom Snarl/Dark Pulse+ is reported at 23.04 DPS and 544.2 TDO in the cited comparison.
Dark burst damage with active dodging Mega Absol High-DPS Dark role, but fragile and less forgiving when attacks connect.
Defense, dual-type catch utility or Sableye progression Mega Sableye Highest listed Defense and Dark/Ghost utility, but not a serious raid-damage pick.

Bottom line for 2026

Mega Sableye is a defensive, utility-oriented Mega—not a replacement for the leading Dark- and Ghost-type raid attackers. For Ghost raids, Mega Gengar is the damage benchmark and Mega Banette is the safer-typing alternative. For Dark raids, Mega Houndoom offers the strongest cited combination of damage and total output, while Mega Absol trades survivability for high-DPS potential.

Choose Sableye when its Dark/Ghost typing, Mega-level progression, catch bonuses or announced Super Max path are the objective. Choose the other Megas when the immediate objective is beating a raid efficiently. Always verify the boss’s moves, your Mega’s live moveset and the current event rules before spending Mega Energy.
