Three mining deals are drawing attention, but they are at very different stages: Eldorado Gold completed its acquisition of Foran Mining on April 14, 2026; Anglo American and Teck have shareholder approval for a proposed merger that still had regulatory conditions outstanding in the latest cited company update; and Rio Tinto–Glencore discussions were reported as preliminary, not as an agreed deal. Together, they show how consolidation could expand gold-and-copper production, but only the Foran acquisition is confirmed complete here.
What mining companies are merging, and will the deals create larger gold and copper producers?
The transactions involve distinct combinations and should not be treated as equally certain. Eldorado Gold’s completed purchase of Foran adds a gold-and-copper company to Eldorado’s portfolio. Anglo American and Teck proposed combining their businesses into a larger, copper-focused miner, subject to outstanding approvals. Rio Tinto and Glencore were reported to be in preliminary discussions about a possible acquisition, with no agreement established by the cited report.

Eldorado Gold–Foran: a completed gold-and-copper acquisition
Eldorado Gold’s transaction page records that its acquisition of Foran Mining completed on April 14, 2026. The company had announced an equity value of approximately C$3.8 billion for the transaction, with Eldorado shareholders expected to own about 76% and former Foran shareholders about 24% of the combined company. These figures describe the announced transaction terms, not a separate measure of realized operating performance. Eldorado Gold transaction details.
This is the clearest completed transaction among the three cases. It brings together gold and copper interests, rather than representing a copper-only consolidation or a still-negotiated megamerger.

Anglo American–Teck: a large copper merger, still conditional in the latest cited update
Anglo American and Teck announced a merger-of-equals agreement on September 9, 2025. Their announcement described a proposed top-five global copper producer, with shareholders of Anglo American expected to own approximately 62.4% and Teck shareholders approximately 37.6% of the combined company. Teck shareholders approved the proposal on December 9, 2025. Anglo American’s approval announcement said regulatory and Investment Canada Act approvals were still required, with work with regulators expected during 2026. That update does not establish whether the merger later completed, so it should not be described as a closed transaction without a newer company or regulatory filing. How to read the copper production figures
The companies estimated combined annual copper production at around 1.2 million tonnes using specified 2024 production baselines, and forecast roughly 1.35 million tonnes in 2027. The latter is a company projection, not a reported post-merger result. Both figures depend on the assumptions in the companies’ announcement and should not be read as independently verified output from a completed combined business. Synergies and ownership are projections, not guaranteed outcomes
Anglo American and Teck projected approximately US$800 million in annual pre-tax synergies by the end of the fourth year after completion. They also described separate annual EBITDA revenue synergies associated with adjacent Collahuasi and Quebrada Blanca assets. Rio Tinto–Glencore: reported talks, not a merger agreement
Axios reported on January 8, 2026, that Rio Tinto and Glencore were in preliminary discussions about a potential acquisition. The report cited a possible combined valuation of around US$260 billion, a press estimate rather than a company-confirmed deal valuation. Preliminary discussions do not establish that the companies reached an agreement, and no later status is established by the cited report. Axios report on the discussions.
Because both companies are diversified miners, any combination would differ in scope from Eldorado–Foran’s gold-and-copper acquisition and Anglo American–Teck’s copper-focused proposal. The cited report does not provide a confirmed combined production forecast or transaction terms.

Why deal stage matters as much as company size
A proposed merger can make companies appear larger on paper without changing current production. The useful distinction is between completed ownership changes, conditional transactions and talks that may not lead to an agreement.
