Aquarius is the Water Bearer, a traditional figure traced across a region of the night sky. One of its stars, Eta Aquarii, sits among the stars at the top of the Water Jar and gives the Eta Aquariid meteor shower its name. The distinction matters: meteors appear to come from a point in Aquarius, but the constellation is not their physical source.
What is Aquarius the Water Bearer?
Aquarius is one of the 88 constellations recognized by the International Astronomical Union (IAU). Its abbreviation is Aqr, its common figure-name is “The Water Bearer,” and Aquarii is the genitive form used in star names—for example, Eta Aquarii.
The Water Bearer is a traditional way of interpreting a pattern of stars in the sky. The IAU does not formally fix the lines used to draw constellation figures, so charts may connect the stars differently. The formal constellation, however, is a defined area of sky: an object described as being “in Aquarius” lies within its boundary, whether or not it is part of the familiar figure.

Why is Aquarius associated with water?
The Water Bearer is a cultural interpretation, not an astronomical property of the stars. Water-related imagery appears in several ancient traditions, but there is no single universal origin story. Chandra’s overview describes Babylonian flood associations and Greek and Roman images of a water-bearing figure, including Ganymede. It also notes water associations in other ancient cultures.
These traditions offer different ways people made meaning from the same region of sky. They should be understood as historical and cultural interpretations, rather than as evidence that the stars form a physically connected figure. Chandra’s Aquarius overview discusses these varied associations.

Which stars make up the Water Jar?
A prominent part of Aquarius’s traditional figure is the Water Jar, usually shown as a small group of stars at the top of the jar. NASA identifies Eta Aquarii as one of the four stars in this upper group. Its formal star name uses the constellation’s genitive form, Aquarii.
The pattern is a view from Earth, not a cluster of neighboring stars in space. Stars that appear close together in a constellation may be at very different distances from us and generally have no physical connection to one another. A chart helps you recognize the traditional outline; the constellation boundary defines the larger astronomical area.

Do the Eta Aquariids come from Aquarius?
No. The Eta Aquariids are a meteor shower, and Aquarius helps identify the direction from which its meteors appear to arrive. That apparent point is called the radiant. NASA explains that the constellation named in a meteor shower’s name helps viewers identify the shower, but “the constellation is not the source of the meteors.” The name reflects the radiant’s location in Aquarius, not a physical origin inside the constellation.
That distinction is useful for observing: a meteor can appear in another part of the sky even when its shower is named for a radiant in Aquarius. NASA’s Eta Aquariids guide explains the radiant and the shower’s connection to Comet Halley.

Are Aquarius’s stars physically connected?
Generally, no. Constellations are patterns as seen from Earth, and the stars that make up a familiar outline can lie at widely differing distances. Aquarius is real as a formally bounded region of sky, but the Water Bearer is a human interpretation of a two-dimensional view—not a single object in space.
For the same reason, avoid treating a star-name certificate as official astronomical recognition. The IAU says most stars are identified by alphanumeric designations and maintains a catalogue of approved proper names. It states that commercial star names sold on certificates “have no formal or official validity whatsoever.” Its guidance on buying star names explains the distinction.

How to find Aquarius on a chart
- Start with a sky chart. Use the IAU’s Aquarius chart to see both the constellation’s boundary and the traditional star figure.
- Look for the Water Jar pattern. Use the chart’s connecting lines as a recognition aid, remembering that such lines are not formally fixed.
- Locate Eta Aquarii. On a suitable chart, identify it among the four stars NASA places at the top of the Water Jar.
- Keep the meteor radiant in perspective. Aquarius marks the apparent direction associated with the Eta Aquariids; it is not where the meteors physically originate.
