Choose Medieval Times if you want a staged tournament, horses, cheering and a fixed banquet. Choose a traditional dinner theater if you would rather watch a play or musical while dining. Neither format is automatically better. The right choice depends on the kind of live performance, meal service, seating, schedule, accessibility and total ticket inclusions offered by the specific venue.
Medieval Times describes an approximately 90-minute performance within a roughly two-hour visit, while “dinner theater” is a broad category whose format differs from one theater to another. Compare the actual show, menu, timing and ticket terms before booking.
The central difference: tournament spectacle or play and musical
Medieval Times is an arena-style experience built around a staged tournament and banquet. Guests cheer for one of six knights and watch jousting, swordsmanship, hand-to-hand combat, horsemanship and falconry. The setting is a family-friendly interpretation of an 11th-century feast and tournament in Medieval Spain.

Traditional dinner theater is a format rather than one specific production. A general description from Emory University’s electronic thesis collection is a familiar musical or play presented with dinner included in the ticket, with drinks often sold separately. Individual venues may instead stage a murder mystery, comedy, revue, interactive production or another genre. Some use table service; others serve food before the curtain, during an interval or after the show.

That distinction matters more than the word “dinner.” At Medieval Times, the contest, horses and arena atmosphere are the main event. At a conventional dinner theater, the script, songs, actors and theatrical staging usually carry the experience. Read the listing for the particular dinner theater rather than assuming that every venue follows the same pattern.
What should you expect at Medieval Times?
Arrival, the Castle and pre-show time
Guests enter through the Castle rather than a conventional theater lobby. Before the performance, you can visit the Hall of Arms, browse the gift shop or buy drinks at the bar. The official FAQ recommends arriving when doors open, both to improve your chance of getting preferred seats within the section you selected and to avoid a long entrance line. Use the doors-open time in your confirmation email because schedules differ by Castle.
Seating is first-come within the chosen package and is influenced by the size of your group. Buying a particular section does not mean you can arrive at any time and select any seat in that section. If sitting together or having a particular sightline is important, build pre-show arrival into your plan. A late arrival can also compress the time available for the Hall of Arms, restroom stop, bar or gift shop before the action begins.
The performance itself
The venue lists the show runtime as approximately 90 minutes. Its FAQ separately describes the visit as “a 2 hour experience full of adventure set in Medieval Spain,” so allow additional time for entry, finding seats and pre-show activity. The performance combines several forms of staged action:
- Jousting between the competing knights.
- Swordsmanship and hand-to-hand combat.
- Horsemanship built around trained horses and arena movement.
- Falconry demonstrations.
- Audience cheering for one of six knights.
The result feels closer to an arena event than to a seated proscenium play. The crowd is expected to react, cheer and follow the fortunes of its assigned knight. If your group enjoys visual spectacle, live animals and a clear good-versus-good tournament structure, this format supplies those elements without requiring you to know a story beforehand.
It is useful to set expectations about the word “tournament.” This is a staged entertainment production, not an unscripted sporting competition. The appeal is the combination of costumes, horses, choreography, music, pageantry and audience allegiance. Someone looking for a quiet, dialogue-heavy drama may find the arena energy distracting; someone who wants continuous physical action may appreciate that the spectacle remains the focus.
What is included with the dinner?
Medieval Times publishes a fixed four-course banquet rather than a menu with many entrée choices. The listed meal includes:

Adult guests can purchase alcoholic refreshments at the bar. Vegetarian meals are available on request. The ticketing process gathers dietary restrictions and allergens during the visit process, but anyone with a serious allergy or a strict dietary requirement should verify the procedure with the selected Castle before purchasing. Menus and handling practices can be location-specific.
The fixed format can be convenient for a group: you are not spending the performance deciding among multiple entrées. It can also be limiting if diners need extensive substitutions or want a broad range of portions and cuisines. Confirm whether a requested accommodation must be entered during checkout, communicated by telephone or repeated to staff on arrival.
Atmosphere, comfort and practical rules
Dress is casual. Indoor Castles are climate-controlled, although a light sweater may make the experience more comfortable for guests who get cold. Strobe effects are used during the show, so consider that if anyone in your party is sensitive to flashing lights.
Flash photography is not allowed. Weapons are prohibited inside the Castle, including fake or toy weapons; this rule applies even though medieval-style toys may be sold as souvenirs. Accessible seating can be requested during booking or from staff. Ask about the exact seating arrangement and any other access requirement at the location you plan to visit.
Parking is free at the listed U.S. Castles. Toronto is identified as an exception, where public lots on the grounds charge seasonal rates. Confirm parking, entrance and accessibility details for your specific Castle because local arrangements can change.
Families should also think about the combination of darkness, sound, movement and meal timing. The venue describes the experience as family-friendly, but each guest has a different tolerance for cheering, combat staging, flashing effects and animals in motion. Reading the current location information and explaining the format to children beforehand can prevent surprises.
How traditional dinner theater generally works
The production comes first
In the conventional model, the ticket combines a meal with a scripted production, often a familiar musical or play. You may spend most of the evening watching actors perform dialogue and songs rather than following a competition. The production might be performed on a stage facing the audience, in a room where actors move among tables or in an interactive format.

“Dinner theater” does not identify a single genre. A venue could present a serious drama, a comedy, a themed mystery, a holiday show or a musical revue. Check the production title, running order and age guidance before assuming that it will resemble a Medieval Times tournament. A familiar title may help a group decide whether children or occasional theatergoers will follow the story, while an original mystery may depend more on participation.

Many dinner theaters include dinner in the ticket and sell drinks separately, a pattern described in the Emory University source. That is not a universal rule. Some venues let you select from several entrées; others offer a preset meal, buffet or limited menu. Food may be served before the performance, while actors perform or during an interval. Service may be included at your table, collected at a buffet or handled through a separate dining area.
Ask these questions before paying:
- Is the meal included in the advertised ticket or an add-on?
- What courses, entrée choices and beverages are included?
- Are alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks priced separately?
- Can the kitchen handle vegetarian meals, allergies or other restrictions?
- When will food be served relative to the performance?
- Are gratuity, service charges or a separate dining fee shown at checkout?
Do not infer the answer from a venue’s name or photographs. A dinner theater may advertise a meal but require a separate reservation, while another may include only a limited course and charge for every additional beverage. The actual ticket description and checkout terms are the useful comparison.
Seating and audience interaction are venue-specific
A dinner theater may use individual tables, long shared tables, cabaret seating or standard rows facing a stage. Some productions invite audience participation; others ask guests to remain quiet and watch like they would at a conventional theater. The available evidence does not support a universal claim that dinner theaters are more or less interactive than Medieval Times. Read the venue’s seating plan and production description.
Table placement can affect both the meal and the show. Ask whether seats are assigned, whether parties may be seated with other guests and whether the best sightlines carry an extra charge. If conversation during dinner is difficult for someone in your group, check whether the meal is served before the performance or while the actors are working.

Which experience fits your outing?
Pick Medieval Times when spectacle is the priority
Medieval Times is a strong fit for a group that wants visible action, horses, cheering and a clearly themed setting. It can work especially well for families or visitors who prefer an event that does not depend on following a long dramatic plot. The fixed banquet also simplifies ordering once you are seated.

It may be a poor match if someone dislikes flashing lights, loud arena reactions, animal performances, preset food or the restriction against bringing toy weapons inside. Guests who need extensive menu customization should confirm options before buying because the published meal is structured rather than à la carte.
Arrival matters more here than at a typical reserved-seat theater. If your party wants to sit together within its package section, plan to be present when doors open. Build in time for parking, the entrance line and any accessibility discussion rather than treating the 90-minute performance as the entire outing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPick dinner theater when story and music matter most
A conventional dinner theater is the better direction when your group wants a narrative play, musical numbers or a particular production. It may offer more choice in genre and, at some venues, more choice in food. That advantage exists only if the selected theater actually provides those options; the label alone is not enough.
Check whether the experience is formal or casual, whether actors interact with diners and whether the meal interrupts the performance. A guest expecting a quiet stage musical could be surprised by an interactive mystery, just as a guest seeking an energetic show could find a traditional production too restrained.
For a theater-focused evening, read the synopsis and running time, then confirm whether the dining schedule leaves enough time to enjoy the food without missing dialogue or songs. If the production is unfamiliar, age guidance and the venue’s description can help you judge whether it suits your group.
Use the actual ticket value, not the category name
There is no reliable universal price comparison between the two formats. Medieval Times ticket prices and promotions depend on the Castle, date and package. Dinner-theater prices depend on the theater, production, seating and meal. Compare the full current cost for your party and list exactly what it includes: admission, food, beverages, service charges, parking and any optional upgrades.

How to compare two real venues step by step
- Define the show you want. Decide whether your group would rather cheer through a tournament or watch a specific play, musical, mystery or other production.
- Open the official listing for the exact date. For Medieval Times, choose the Castle first; the ticketing flow states that dates, times, tickets and promotions differ by location.
- Record the timing. Note doors-open time, advertised performance length, meal timing and the expected finish. For Medieval Times, plan for an approximately 90-minute show inside a visit described as about two hours.
- Check seating rules. Confirm whether seats are assigned, first-come, grouped by package or arranged at tables. If your party needs accessible seating, request it during booking or contact staff.
- Read the food and beverage terms. Write down the included courses, drink allowance, entrée choices and allergy process. Do not assume that a dinner-theater ticket includes the same items as a Medieval Times banquet.
- Review sensory and conduct policies. Look for strobe warnings, photography rules, noise expectations and prohibited items. Medieval Times does not permit weapons, including fake or toy weapons, inside the Castle.
- Calculate the complete outing cost. Include ticket price, separately purchased drinks, parking, transportation and any fees shown at checkout. Treat promotional prices as date- and location-specific.
- Confirm details shortly before travel. Recheck the confirmation email for doors-open time, location instructions, dietary notes and parking because local policies and schedules can change.
Questions to ask before you buy
- What exactly is the performance, and how long does the entire visit last?
- Does the ticket include the meal, or is dining sold separately?
- Are drinks included, and are alcoholic beverages available?
- How are seats assigned, and can our group sit together?
- What should guests with allergies or vegetarian requirements do before arrival?
- Are flashing lights, loud effects or audience participation part of the show?
- Is accessible seating available, and how should it be requested?
- What time do doors open, and where should guests park?
- Are there prohibited items, photography restrictions or special conduct rules?
- What is the complete price after taxes, fees, parking and optional upgrades?
Bottom line
Medieval Times is a themed tournament-and-banquet outing: approximately 90 minutes of jousting, combat, horsemanship and falconry within a roughly two-hour Castle visit, with a published fixed meal. Dinner theater is the broader choice for a meal paired with a play, musical or other production whose details vary by venue. Select the format that matches your group’s preferred show, then verify the specific location’s schedule, seating, menu, accessibility information and complete ticket inclusions.
