Medibank Comprehensive Extras is an Extras policy, not proof of hospital cover. Whether it is worthwhile depends on the benefits and limits in the Product Information Statement for your state and membership, the services you expect to use, and the premium you are quoted. The examples below come from a South Australian single-person statement issued 16 September 2026; they are not nationwide terms or a promise of what any member will receive.

What does “Medibank Comprehensive” mean?

The name can be ambiguous. The current government-hosted Product Information Statement identifies Medibank Comprehensive Extras as general treatment cover—commonly called Extras—not a standalone hospital policy. Do not assume hospital treatment is included just because “Comprehensive” appears in the product name. Check your membership documents to see whether you hold Extras only or a separate hospital policy as well.

The benefit examples in this review are from the South Australian, single-person statement issued 16 September 2026. Benefits, premiums and conditions can differ by state, membership type and policy version. Use the statement that applies to your own cover, along with a current quote.

What benefits and limits does the South Australian example show?

The statement lists benefits across dental, optical and allied-health services. The table summarizes selected limits, waits and example benefits; amounts are policy examples, not guaranteed reimbursements. A listed service may still leave you paying part of the provider’s charge.

Service Example annual or lifetime limit Waiting period Example benefit or condition
General dental $800 per policy 2 months $22.50 for a periodic oral examination; $44 for a scale and clean
Major dental and endodontic $500 combined per policy 12 months One shared limit for these services
Orthodontics $400 initially, then $200 annual top-up, to a $1,200 lifetime limit per policy 12 months Lifetime cap applies
Optical $200 per policy 6 months Statement examples show 100% of the charge for single-vision and multifocal lenses and frames within the stated limits
Physiotherapy $300 per policy 2 months $35.20 for an initial visit; $30 for a subsequent visit
Psychology $400 per policy No waiting period $118.37 for an initial visit; $102.93 for a subsequent visit. Counselling shares the annual limit.
Emergency ambulance Benefit subject to the statement’s conditions 1 day South Australian benefit; urgency, transport and approved-provider conditions apply

The statement also lists podiatry, chiropractic and osteopathy, remedial massage, acupuncture, dietetics, occupational therapy, eye therapy, speech therapy and some health appliances. Their individual limits, shared caps and conditions need to be checked in the applicable statement rather than inferred from the category names.

Because several limits are stated per policy, do not treat them as automatically available to each person on a membership. Check how the limit is structured for your own membership and when it resets.

How can you tell whether the Extras cover is worth its cost?

Compare the premium you are actually quoted with the benefits you realistically expect to claim—not with the maximum limits alone. The Australian Government notes that health policies vary in price, inclusions, exclusions and benefits, so there is no universal value verdict for this product.

  1. List likely services. Estimate the dental, optical and allied-health care you expect to use during the policy year.
  2. Use benefit amounts, not provider charges. For each service, compare the statement’s benefit with the fee your provider charges. A service can be covered while still leaving a gap.
  3. Check shared and policy-wide limits. See whether services draw on a combined cap, whether the cap is per person or per policy, and when it resets.
  4. Account for waiting periods. A benefit may not be claimable immediately after joining. Include any delay before planned treatment in your comparison.
  5. Compare against the full premium and alternatives. Factor in any rebate or insurer discount that applies to your quote, then compare other relevant policies using the same expected services and assumptions.

The Commonwealth Ombudsman advises consumers to compare services, waiting periods, benefit amounts and annual limits, noting that “All health funds operate their general treatment policies quite differently so you should always re-check the benefits as well as any annual limits and how they work.” See its Choosing a Health Insurance Policy guidance.

What should you check before joining or switching?

Confirm the policy version and scope

Read the Product Information Statement for your state and membership type. Confirm the policy name and whether your cover is Extras only or paired with a separate hospital policy. The South Australian example cannot establish the terms or premium for another state or membership.

Ask how waiting periods will be treated

If you are switching funds, ask the new fund whether it will recognize waiting periods you have already served. The Ombudsman recommends checking this directly with the new fund; do not assume every wait carries over in every circumstance.

Get a current, applicable quote

The cited statement shows a single-person premium before any rebate or insurer discount. It is not a nationwide price or an individualized quote. Compare a current quote for your state and membership, and account only for rebates or discounts for which you are eligible.

If you also have hospital cover, assess it separately

Extras benefits do not answer whether a separate hospital policy will cover a particular admission or what you may pay. For hospital cover, check the policy’s exclusions and restricted categories, excesses or co-payments, and whether your local hospital has an agreement with the insurer. Also ask about doctors’ fees: a doctor may charge more than the Medicare Benefits Schedule fee, leaving a gap. The Ombudsman recommends asking for likely costs in advance and explains these issues in its policy-selection guidance.
