You can use the HTML5 MediaRecorder API to record microphone audio together with audio exposed by browser screen capture—but it cannot access Google Meet or Zoom audio directly, and dual audio is not guaranteed. The browser, operating system, and surface you choose to share determine whether the captured display stream includes meeting audio. Check for both audio tracks before recording, then test the saved file in your exact setup.
What MediaRecorder records
MediaRecorder records a MediaStream supplied to its constructor; it does not independently capture a meeting or reach into Meet or Zoom. In browser capture, you first request the available media tracks, then combine the microphone track and any display-capture audio track, and finally pass that stream to the recorder. That distinction matters: a recording can start successfully while containing only your microphone, or only the tracks the browser actually returned. The API does not promise separate participant tracks, isolated audio stems, or a platform’s internal meeting audio.
Try browser capture with microphone and display audio
Start capture from a user-activated control, such as a button click. The browser prompts for microphone access and opens a display-selection chooser. The user must choose what to share; display capture cannot be silently reused. Requesting audio is only a request, not proof that audio will be available.

}This is an illustrative workflow, not a tested compatibility recipe for every Meet or Zoom configuration. A display stream can include video without audio even when audio: true was requested. MDN’s Screen Capture API guide explains that audio capture is optional and availability depends on browser and capture surface. Inspect getAudioTracks() before starting; if the display stream has no audio track, do not label the output dual-audio.
Select a recording format only after checking support
Browser support for recording formats can differ. Before passing a MIME type in the MediaRecorder options, check it with MediaRecorder.isTypeSupported(); otherwise use the browser’s supported default. Handle the recorder’s data events and retain the emitted Blob data if you need a saved file. The MediaStream Recording API guide documents the recording controls and data events.

Stop capture and release resources
When the user stops, stop the recorder if it is active, then stop tracks on both the microphone and display streams to release capture resources. Also handle a user ending screen sharing from the browser’s capture UI: the display video track can end independently, so the page should respond by stopping the recorder and cleaning up its streams.
Check whether browser capture is the right method
Browser capture is one option, not a substitute that is guaranteed to match the platform’s official recording. The three approaches differ in eligibility, capture source, and where the recording goes.

Meet’s built-in recording: eligibility and destination
Google’s current help page says recording is available for certain Workspace editions and Google One subscribers with at least 2 TB, with the administrator required to enable the feature. A participant’s ability to record also depends on their role and host permission. When recording starts or stops, participants receive a notification. The recording is saved in the organizer’s Google Drive, in the Google Meet folder. Google says Meet recordings include the active speaker and anything presented; recording stops automatically after eight hours. Consult Google Meet Help for current eligibility because account entitlements can change.
Zoom computer recording: eligibility and consent
Zoom documents computer recording for free and paid subscribers using its desktop app for Windows, macOS, or Linux. The host can record or grant a participant recording permission. Zoom’s help page describes local recording and options including separate audio files. Zoom also documents consent prompts when recording begins or when someone joins a meeting that is already being recorded; behavior can vary with account settings and application version. Check Zoom Support’s computer-recording guidance for applicable requirements.

Test the complete setup before relying on it
A successful capture in one configuration does not establish support in another. Test with the same browser, operating system, meeting client, audio output route, and capture surface you intend to use. Make a short recording, confirm both your voice and remote participants are audible, and verify the saved file plays as expected. If display audio is missing, use the platform’s official recorder if it is available to you, or another method appropriate to your permissions and consent obligations. A microphone or headset can provide local input, but it cannot make remote meeting audio appear in the display stream.
