Peter Hirschmann, the game’s director at Respawn Entertainment, described Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond as both a return to the series and an effort to preserve veterans’ first-hand stories. The 2020 VR game put players in the role of an Office of Strategic Services (OSS) agent in wartime Europe; Hirschmann’s interviews and EA’s announcement offer a view of how the team approached that shift to virtual reality.
Who is Peter Hirschmann, and what was his role?
Electronic Arts identified Hirschmann as a director at Respawn Entertainment for Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond. The game marked the franchise’s move into VR, with a World War II setting and a story centered on an OSS agent working in Europe.
In EA’s announcement, Hirschmann said the series had been about “celebrating the everyday people who did extraordinary things in the face of overwhelming odds,” and that Above and Beyond continued that tradition. This is his stated creative intent, not an independent assessment of the game’s historical accuracy.

Shacknews published a hands-on interview report on September 30, 2019, describing a conversation with Hirschmann about the development effort, adapting natural human movement to game controls, and the challenges and immersive effects of VR. In that interview, Hirschmann said, “We went all in 2.5 years ago.” That is his account of the team’s commitment at the time, not an independently audited production timeline.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The practical design challenge is visible in the subject of that conversation: movement that feels natural to a person does not automatically translate cleanly into game controls. VR makes that translation especially consequential because players experience the action through their own movement and perspective. The interview report establishes that the team discussed these issues, but does not provide enough detail to claim a particular control solution or development method.
Why did the project include veterans’ stories?
EA’s 2019 announcement said the team captured veterans’ first-hand stories through interviews and 360-degree footage, with the stated goal of preserving those accounts for future generations. The announcement frames this material as part of the project’s historical and commemorative purpose alongside its fictionalized playable role as an OSS agent.

At launch, Hirschmann described the work as a privilege “to preserve history in such a unique medium and retell the remarkable stories of these veterans and resistance fighters for generations to come.” He made that statement in EA’s 2020 announcement, which referred to the 75th anniversary of World War II. The anniversary reference belongs to that launch-era context; it is not a present-day statistic.

EA’s launch announcement listed 12 multiplayer maps and five modes:
- Deathmatch
- Team Deathmatch
- Domination
- Blast Radius
- Mad Bomber, described by EA as involving physical bomb placement and locating bombs through sight and 3D positional sound
EA announced those features in 2020. The available information does not establish whether the game’s multiplayer services are active now, so the announced modes should not be treated as confirmation that online play currently works.

What do the interviews add beyond the announcement?
Shacknews’ September 2019 report is useful for Hirschmann’s development perspective, particularly the problem of translating human movement into VR controls. History Respawned published a separate interview with him on May 19, 2022. Its listed themes include the history of the Medal of Honor series, bringing it to VR, the game’s Gallery, its Oscar, and the enduring popularity of World War II games. The listing establishes those topics, but not enough transcript detail to attribute further specific claims to Hirschmann.

A headset alone is not enough for the PC edition: you also need a PC that meets the game’s requirements and a compatible PC VR setup. A separate Quest 2 adaptation was reviewed in 2022, but it is a distinct edition; the PC requirements above do not describe it. The evidence available here does not support a complete feature-by-feature comparison of the two versions.
