Mechanism’s Basecase combines a protective shell for Nintendo Switch 2 with interchangeable grips and a modular backplate designed to work with the company’s mounts. The manufacturer lists it for $49 and says an included Dock Stick enables use with the original Nintendo dock. Those features make it an interesting option for players who want a case that can do more than protect the console—but the published specifications do not establish drop-test performance or how comfortable the grips are for a particular person.
What is Mechanism’s Basecase?
Basecase is a protective case for Nintendo Switch 2 that also serves as an attachment point for Mechanism’s modular mount system. The company describes its mounts as compatible with its “innies,” including Basecase, so the case may suit players who want to move the console between handheld, mounted, or hands-free setups. Mechanism’s product listing is at the Basecase product page.
Mechanism lists a $49 price and a 4.86 rating from seven reviews on that page as accessed in 2026. Prices and review counts can change; seven self-hosted reviews are too small a sample to represent customer opinion broadly.

Mechanism says Basecase has an impact-resistant polycarbonate shell, overmolded rubber edges raised above the screen, and a secure case lock. The company specifies 2 mm of added thickness around the console. These are manufacturer descriptions and specifications, not independent test results: they do not establish how the case performs in a drop or whether the raised edges protect the screen in every situation.

The listed features describe a shell around the console, not a separate travel cover over its screen. If you need the display covered while the Switch 2 is packed in a bag, check the product listing for any included cover or plan on a separate transport solution; the available product details do not establish that Basecase includes one.
What comes with it, and can you customize it?
Interchangeable grips and cartridge storage
Mechanism says the case includes two interchangeable ergonomic grips. Each grip has a hidden compartment for game cartridges, according to the company. Two options give you a choice of grip shape, but the published information does not provide hand-size measurements or independently assessed comfort. If comfort is a deciding factor, the product description alone cannot tell you whether either grip will suit small, medium, or large hands.

Backplates and 3D-printable designs
The backplates and grip designs are interchangeable, and Mechanism offers its design files for free download and remixing. That opens the door to custom shapes and parts, but making a printed design requires access to a 3D printer or a way to have the part printed. The company’s Switch 2 catalog also includes a Basegrip, Universal Grip, Gaming Pillow, and mounts; these are separate product categories, not stated Basecase inclusions. Will it work with the Nintendo Switch 2 dock?
Mechanism says Basecase works with the OEM Nintendo dock when you use the included Dock Stick. The product page also says the built-in kickstand remains accessible. That answers the manufacturer’s stated compatibility setup: the Dock Stick is required for the company’s OEM-dock claim. The available information does not independently verify fit, so confirm the current instructions and included contents before relying on docking in your setup.

Who is Basecase best suited to?
Basecase is most compelling if you want a protective shell that can also connect to Mechanism’s mounts, and you value having two grip options and cartridge storage in those grips. Its customization options may appeal to people comfortable with 3D printing or adapting community designs.
It may be less suitable if your priority is a fully covered screen for travel, a minimal-bulk case, or proven protection under specific drop conditions. The stated 2 mm of added thickness is useful when judging bulk, but no comparative measurements against other cases are established here. Likewise, the available information does not support a head-to-head verdict on grip comfort, protection, or price versus competing models.
