A useful API latency benchmark measures clearly defined boundaries—not a single number that treats REST responses, WebSocket events and webhook deliveries as equivalent. Use a monotonic clock for durations measured on one machine, keep cross-system one-way estimates separate, and report the workload, clock assumptions, sample distribution and failures alongside every result.
What are you actually measuring?
Before writing a benchmark script, decide what question the result should answer. A client request’s round-trip duration, the time an event takes to reach a receiver, and the age of data when it arrives are different measurements. Even within one protocol, connection setup, application work and delivery can contribute different amounts.
- Request latency: elapsed time between a client starting a request and reaching a stated response boundary, such as receiving headers or reading the complete body.
- Delivery latency: elapsed time from an event’s publication or provider-side timestamp to its arrival at your client or receiver.
- Staleness: how old the underlying information or event is when you observe it. A quick response can contain old data.
ITU-T Recommendation Y.1567 puts the measurement discipline succinctly: “All metrics need to be carefully defined.” Its guidance concerns latency measurement under load, not a universal performance ranking of REST, WebSockets and webhooks. It also cautions that HTTP-based measurements include host and protocol-stack effects; an end-to-end API benchmark should be described as application latency, not pure network latency. Use separate measurement functions and result records for each path. For every sample, record the measurement name, start and end boundary, timestamp source, connection state, outcome, and any available event or attempt identifier. Use a monotonic clock for elapsed time on the same machine: it is designed for measuring intervals and is not affected by wall-clock adjustments.

For cross-machine one-way estimates, retain the source timestamps and document clock synchronization and its uncertainty. If the clocks are not suitably aligned, do not report the difference as trustworthy one-way latency. A negative calculated offset is a warning of clock or measurement problems, not a delay to convert into a positive value. ITU-T Y.1567 treats synchronization as necessary for one-way delay measurement.
How do you measure REST request latency?
Time a request with a monotonic clock and label its end boundary. Timing until response headers measures something different from timing until the complete response body has been read; parsing the body is another application step that should be included only if that matches the question. Record the HTTP status, errors and timeouts, and whether the connection was warm or newly established.
This is a client-to-server-to-client round trip on one clock. It captures the application path, including host and HTTP-stack processing; it does not isolate network delay. A response that arrives quickly also does not prove its data is fresh.

Keep polling delay separate
With periodic polling, an update may occur just after a poll and wait for the next one to be detected. Under the assumption of regularly spaced polls and events occurring independently of the polling schedule, the average wait is half the configured polling interval. That waiting time is detection staleness, not request duration. Report the poll interval and keep the two figures distinct.
How do you measure WebSocket performance?
Measure connection establishment separately from behavior on an established connection. A connection can open quickly while application messages arrive irregularly or late. For event delivery, compare a documented provider event-publication timestamp with a local arrival timestamp captured as soon as the message is received, before expensive parsing. This is a one-way estimate across clocks, so timestamp quality and synchronization matter.
Track inter-arrival gaps as well as event age. A quiet feed may show low measured event age while producing few messages; a bursty feed can have uneven gaps without proving that each message was slow to traverse the path.

Do not treat Ping/Pong as event delivery
Ping/Pong timing approximates a connection round-trip time. It can help characterize an established connection, but it is not a one-way measure of provider event delivery. The websockets 13.0.1 keepalive and latency documentation describes Ping/Pong, keepalive and timeout behavior for that library version. Check the documentation for the version your script actually uses. Browser WebSocket APIs do not expose native Ping/Pong; browser clients that need a comparable heartbeat measurement must use an application-level mechanism.
How do you measure webhook delivery?
A webhook’s delivery path runs from the provider to your receiver. If the provider supplies a trustworthy event timestamp and the provider and receiver clocks are suitably aligned, compare that timestamp with a receiver timestamp recorded immediately when request handling begins. Capture arrival before JSON parsing or other application work. Measure handler or acknowledgement time separately if it matters to your question.
Distinguish the event’s timestamp from the timestamp of a delivery attempt. The Standard Webhooks specification describes a delivery-attempt timestamp that can change on retry while the event identity remains the same. Record the provider, attempt number, retry policy and whether reported timing includes time spent waiting for retries. Retry schedules and success criteria vary by provider; consult that provider’s current documentation rather than assuming a general schedule.

A public receiver or tunnel can be useful for a local experiment, but the route, tunnel region and receiver location become part of the observed result. A production endpoint must also authenticate requests and verify signatures; a simplified test receiver is not production security guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you record for each run?
A result is only interpretable alongside its conditions. Keep a run manifest with the API or provider configuration, client and receiver locations, library versions, connection state, workload, timestamp source and clock assumptions. Get endpoints, authentication, WebSocket subscription payloads and event timestamp fields from the provider’s documentation; do not guess them or embed credentials in the script.
- Workload: request rate, concurrency, payload size, event volume and whether the run represents idle, typical or peak use.
- Path and state: region or location, receiver or tunnel location, cold versus warm connections, reconnects and any setup time included.
- Outcome: status codes, errors, timeouts, missing or unparseable timestamps, delivery retries and the number of valid samples.
- Software: language and library versions. Interfaces change; for example, WebSocket connection-header parameter names differ across library versions.
- Context: run date and duration, and any provider status incident that could affect interpretation. A status page is context, not a latency measurement.
Pin or document dependency versions and verify their current APIs before treating an example as runnable. Do not publish secrets or hard-code them in scripts.

How should results be summarized and compared?
For each measurement type, report the valid sample count, p50, p95, p99, minimum and maximum; include an average only when it adds useful context and label it explicitly. Put errors, timeouts, reconnects, retries and excluded samples beside the distribution so a clean-looking percentile cannot conceal failures.
Low sample counts do not provide dependable evidence about tail behavior such as p99. Treat that as a practical caution, not a universal statistical threshold. Repeat measurements and, when peak behavior matters, run them at different times and load levels. ITU-T Y.1567 supports the need to define metrics and summarize behavior statistically, especially under load; its methodology does not establish a required sample count for every API benchmark.
Compare measurements only when their boundaries and conditions answer the same question. A REST round trip, a WebSocket event-age estimate and a webhook provider-to-receiver estimate differ in direction, clocking, connection state and included work. They cannot establish that one protocol is universally faster.

| Measurement | Timing boundary | Clock relationship | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| REST request | Client request start to headers or complete response body, as specified | Round trip on one client clock | Application request duration; not data freshness or network-only delay |
| WebSocket setup | Connection attempt start to established connection | Elapsed duration on the client clock | Connection establishment cost, not message delivery performance |
| WebSocket Ping/Pong | Ping sent to Pong received | Round trip on the client clock | Approximate connection RTT, not one-way event delivery |
| WebSocket event delivery | Provider event publication to local message arrival | One-way estimate across clocks | Event age at arrival, subject to timestamp quality and synchronization |
| Webhook delivery | Provider event timestamp to receiver arrival, or attempt timestamp to arrival if explicitly chosen | One-way estimate across clocks | Provider-to-receiver delivery timing; retries and timestamp choice affect meaning |
What a small benchmark can—and cannot—establish
A carefully bounded script can show how your application path behaves under the conditions you recorded. It cannot turn unlike timing boundaries into a fair protocol race, separate network delay from host and stack contributions without a suitable methodology, or establish performance for loads and regions you did not test. For an application-facing question, end-to-end measurements are useful precisely because they include the path users experience; label them accordingly.
