Track AI search visibility with a fixed sample of prompts, then measure mentions, citations, answer accuracy, platform-reported impressions, attributable visits and conversions separately. No single KPI tells you whether a brand is visible across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity: platform reports, sampled answers and website analytics measure different things, so keep their definitions and denominators distinct.
Which AI search visibility KPIs should you track?
Start with a consistent prompt set and record the exact platform, question, date, locale, answer and cited URLs for every check. The ten KPIs below cover whether your brand appears, how it is represented, which pages are surfaced, and whether visibility leads to visits or business outcomes.
1. Brand mention rate
Calculate the percentage of sampled answers that name your brand: answers mentioning the brand divided by answers checked. State the sample size and how prompts were selected. A few hand-picked questions can be useful for exploration, but they are not a stable benchmark.

Calculate the percentage of sampled answers that cite or link to your site. Count an unlinked brand mention separately; a mention does not establish that the answer cited your website. Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report provides citation totals and page-level citation activity for supported experiences, but its total does not reveal where a citation appeared in an individual answer. See Microsoft’s AI Performance help page.

3. Citation share
Measure your site’s citations against a defined competitive set, using the same prompt sample or platform report for each site. State what counts as a citation and which competitors are included. Microsoft announced Citation Share as a preview capability in Bing Webmaster Tools; it is not a universal, standardized visibility score. The feature was part of a set of preview capabilities announced on June 16, 2026, with global rollout described by Microsoft. Microsoft’s announcement describes these as evolving signals, not a single ranking.
4. Cited-page breadth and concentration
Count distinct URLs cited and note whether citations are spread across the pages you want surfaced or concentrated on a small handful. Bing’s URL-level citation counts can help with this analysis, but citation frequency is not a measure of a page’s importance or rank.

5. Prominence in the answer
Code whether a mention or citation appears near the beginning, in a recommendation, or only in supporting material. Define these categories before reviewing answers and apply them consistently. This requires inspecting sampled answers: Bing’s total citation count does not report citation placement.
6. Answer accuracy and sentiment
Review whether descriptions of your brand, products and claims are accurate and current, and code their tone as neutral, positive or negative. Use a written rubric and retain examples so reviewers can apply it consistently. Treat this as your own sampled assessment, not a universal sentiment score supplied by a platform.
7. Prompt and topic coverage
Track which questions, intents and topics produce a brand mention or citation. Group prompts by user need, such as learning, comparing options or solving a specific problem, and report coverage within each group. Bing Webmaster Tools surfaces grounding-query phrases; its preview Intents and Topics views add context for supported experiences.
8. First-party AI impressions
Use Google Search Console’s generative AI Search report to track impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, with page, country, date, device and search-type dimensions. These are Google Search impressions, not cross-platform citation totals. Google notes that the report has the usual Search performance limitations: chart and table totals may differ because of aggregation, new data may be preliminary, and dates use Pacific Time. Google’s Search report documentation explains its scope.
Discover has a separate generative AI performance report. Google said insights had rolled out to websites worldwide as of August 31, 2026, while its help page notes that rollout may still be ongoing for some properties and that a site may not have enough impressions to show data. Discover report dates also use Pacific Time. Google’s Discover report documentation describes its availability and limits.
9. AI referral sessions and engagement
In your analytics platform, identify visits attributed to AI services when referral information is available. Track sessions alongside engagement measures such as engaged sessions and time spent. Google recommends using analytics tools such as Google Analytics to assess conversions and time spent, in addition to Search Console. Referral sessions count visits that arrived at your site; they do not count every answer in which your brand appeared. Google’s guidance on AI features and websites explains the distinction between Search reporting and site analytics.
10. Conversions and assisted outcomes
Measure leads, purchases, subscriptions or another defined outcome from attributable AI referrals. If you report assisted conversions, state the attribution model and window. Impressions or citations by themselves do not establish commercial impact; conversion measurement belongs in analytics.
How should you build a repeatable measurement protocol?
- Define the sample. Fix the prompt set, language, locale, platform, cadence and collection method before comparing periods. Include prompts that reflect the topics and intents you want to measure, not only queries already known to produce a mention.
- Save observations. For each check, preserve the exact question, date, answer text, cited URLs, and observed brand and competitor presence. Record whether a result came from a platform report or a manually inspected answer.
- Repeat checks. AI answers can vary, so rerun prompts and label results as a sample rather than a census. Avoid interpreting one answer as a stable position or a guaranteed outcome for other users.
- Compare like with like. Use the same platform, prompt set, geography and reporting window for period-over-period comparisons. Changes to the sample or collection method can change the result even if underlying visibility has not changed.
- Keep units separate. Label every figure as an impression, citation, mention, session or conversion. Do not combine platform-native counts with third-party monitoring estimates unless their coverage, definitions and methods are understood and shown separately.
What do first-party reports actually cover?
As described in the official documentation below, Bing Webmaster Tools and Google Search Console report on their respective supported experiences; neither should be treated as a single cross-platform score for ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
- Bing Webmaster Tools: Microsoft introduced AI Performance in public preview on February 10, 2026. It reports citation activity across Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated Bing summaries and select partner integrations, including total citations, average cited pages, URL-level citations, trends and grounding-query phrases. It does not show citation placement in an answer. The later preview expansion added Intents, Topics, Citation Share and Compare; Microsoft says coverage and precision may improve as those capabilities develop. Read the AI Performance help page and June 16, 2026 announcement.
- Google Search Console: Its generative AI Search report provides impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Its separate Discover report covers generative AI features in Discover. These reports are specific to Google surfaces and retain the reporting limitations and availability qualifications in Google’s Search documentation and Discover documentation.
For ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, sampled prompt checks can help you observe what appears in selected answers, but do not present that sample as a platform-wide ranking or a census of all responses. Confirm a third-party monitor’s exact platform coverage, geography, sampling method, history and export options before treating its estimate as comparable to first-party data. Google cautions: “Be wary of third-party tools that promise ranking success or claim to use ‘internal’ Google metrics.” Google’s generative AI Search guidance also recommends foundational SEO practices rather than supposed GEO hacks.

How should technical SEO fit into the dashboard?
Track crawlability, indexing and eligibility as diagnostic checks, not as proof of AI visibility. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet to be eligible as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, but eligibility does not guarantee that Google will crawl, index or serve it. Google’s AI features guidance explains how its generative Search features relate to Search systems and retrieved web pages.
A practical dashboard therefore keeps four kinds of evidence distinct: technical eligibility, sampled answer observations, platform-specific impressions or citations, and attributable site outcomes. Together they help diagnose where a gap occurs without mistaking one kind of signal for another.
