EDR is the endpoint-security technology; MDR is the managed service that operates security technology with people, procedures and threat intelligence. EDR records activity on computers and servers, detects suspicious behavior, raises alerts and provides investigation and containment controls. MDR adds analysts who monitor those alerts, investigate incidents and coordinate response, often around the clock.
A small business with named staff, suitable skills and dependable after-hours coverage can run EDR internally. If alerts are routinely deferred, no one can investigate outside office hours, or leadership needs an accountable incident-response partner, MDR is usually the safer operating model. You can also keep a chosen EDR platform and add an MDR service to operate it.
EDR and MDR answer different problems
Endpoint detection and response (EDR) is a software capability deployed to laptops, desktops, servers and sometimes other endpoint types. It collects process, file, script, network and authentication events, analyzes them for suspicious patterns and presents detections in a security console. Microsoft describes Defender for Endpoint EDR as providing advanced, near-real-time, actionable detections, alert investigation, breach-scope visibility and response actions.

Put simply, EDR answers “What is happening on this device, and what controls can I use?” MDR answers “Who is watching, deciding whether it is an incident and acting when staff are unavailable?” Buying EDR does not, by itself, mean a vendor’s analysts are continuously reviewing every alert.
How EDR works in practice
1. An endpoint agent collects telemetry
An EDR agent runs on supported operating systems and records security-relevant activity. Typical telemetry includes new processes and parent-child relationships, command-line arguments, script interpreters, file changes, persistence mechanisms, network connections and user context. The exact data fields, upload behavior and retention period depend on the product and plan.
2. Detection logic identifies suspicious behavior
Rules, behavioral analytics, machine-learning models and threat intelligence look for patterns such as credential dumping, unusual scripting, ransomware-like file changes or a process launching from an unexpected location. A detection should be treated as a lead, not automatic proof of compromise; legitimate administration tools and software updates can resemble attacks.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →3. Analysts or administrators investigate
The console should let an investigator pivot from an alert to related processes, devices, users, files and network events. EDR is particularly useful for determining the initial process, the scope of a breach and whether the same indicator appears elsewhere. Advanced hunting features may allow searches across historical telemetry, but availability and retention vary by plan.
4. Response controls contain the endpoint
Microsoft documents manual Defender response actions such as running an antivirus scan, isolating a device, stopping and quarantining a file, and adding an indicator to block or allow a file. The available actions depend on the subscription and configuration. Some higher-tier plans provide automated investigation and response; verify the entitlement rather than assuming it is included.
Isolation can stop most network communication while preserving a management channel, but it can also interrupt a user’s work or a server’s function. A response policy therefore needs approval rules, exceptions for critical systems and a process for restoring normal connectivity.

What MDR adds beyond an EDR license
Continuous monitoring
MDR services specify monitoring hours. “24/7” should mean that a staffed team reviews and escalates events continuously, not merely that a dashboard is available at all times. Confirm the time zone, holiday coverage, alert-ingestion delays and the service-level objective for contacting you.
Alert triage and investigation
Analysts filter false positives, enrich alerts with threat intelligence and investigate the surrounding activity. They can distinguish a sanctioned administrative action from a malicious one more consistently than an unattended queue. Ask whether the service investigates only high-severity alerts or also hunts for lower-signal activity.
Response coordination
MDR may isolate a device, block an indicator or disable an account under a pre-approved playbook. Other providers only recommend actions and wait for the customer to approve them. The contract should state exactly who can act, which systems are in scope, how approval is obtained and who communicates with management during an incident.
Processes and accountability
A mature service maintains runbooks, escalation paths, case records and post-incident reports. It can coordinate with an internal IT provider, an incident-response retainer, insurers or legal counsel. This process layer is the main reason MDR can be valuable to a small company that owns security tooling but lacks a security operations team.
MDR vs EDR: side-by-side comparison
| Question | EDR operated internally | MDR service |
|---|---|---|
| What is purchased? | Endpoint agents, detection analytics and a management console. | Monitoring and response operations delivered by analysts around security tooling; an EDR platform may be included or supplied by the customer. |
| Who watches alerts? | Named employees or an IT provider assigned by the business. | The MDR provider’s analysts during the contracted coverage window. |
| Who investigates? | Internal staff must have the time and skills to investigate. | Provider analysts investigate according to the service scope and escalation rules. |
| Who contains a device? | Internal staff, unless a configured automation performs the action. | The provider, the customer or both, depending on written authorization. |
| After-hours coverage | Only available if the business schedules and compensates on-call staff. | May be continuous; verify the stated hours and service-level agreement. |
| Policy tuning | Customer owns exclusions, detection tuning and update management. | Provider may tune policies, but the contract should define what changes are allowed and how they are approved. |
| Context from other systems | Requires the customer to configure identity, email, cloud, firewall, SIEM and ticketing integrations. | Often part of the service, but each integration and data source must be listed as included or optional. |
| Telemetry retention and hunting | Determined by the purchased plan and the customer’s configuration. | Determined by the platform and service package; ask about retention, search access and evidence export. |
| Primary cost | License plus staff time, training, tools and incident-response support. | Per-endpoint or service fee plus any platform, onboarding, response or overage charges. |
| Best fit | A business with dependable security ownership and response coverage. | A business that cannot provide continuous monitoring or wants an external team accountable for triage and coordination. |
Decide whether your business can operate EDR itself
Do not start with a product brochure. Start with an operating model. EDR is an appropriate internal choice only when the following responsibilities have named owners:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Reviewing the alert queue every working day and during agreed on-call periods.
- Investigating high-severity detections and documenting a disposition.
- Keeping endpoint agents healthy when devices are replaced, offline or reimaged.
- Tuning noisy policies without creating blind spots.
- Isolating devices, blocking files or disabling accounts under a defined authority.
- Escalating incidents to management, legal, insurers and specialist responders when necessary.
- Testing backups and recovery after a destructive event.
Ask an operational question rather than a technical one: if a ransomware alert appears at 2 a.m. on a weekend, who receives it, who decides whether to isolate the device, and who can reach the person with authority to approve business disruption? If the answer is “someone will look at it Monday,” the business does not have continuous EDR operations.

Who responds when an endpoint is compromised?
With internally operated EDR
The business’s designated administrator or security staff member validates the alert, determines scope, preserves evidence and takes containment action. An outsourced IT provider can perform these duties only if its contract, access rights and response hours explicitly cover them. A software vendor normally provides the controls; it does not automatically assume responsibility for your incident.
With MDR
The MDR analyst follows the agreed playbook, opens a case and contacts the customer’s escalation list. Depending on authorization, the analyst may isolate the endpoint, stop and quarantine a file, block an indicator or recommend those actions for approval. The customer remains responsible for business decisions such as shutting down a production server, notifying affected parties or engaging legal counsel unless a separate contract says otherwise.
Questions to put in the statement of work
- Which alerts are monitored, and during which hours?
- What is the guaranteed time to acknowledge and escalate a critical alert?
- Can the provider isolate endpoints or disable accounts without prior approval?
- Which operating systems, servers and cloud workloads are covered?
- Who owns evidence, case records and threat-hunting results?
- How are false positives, maintenance windows and emergency exceptions handled?
- What happens if the EDR console, agent or provider connection is unavailable?
Check endpoint and operating-system coverage
Inventory the actual fleet before comparing products. Confirm support for the Windows editions in use, macOS versions, Linux distributions, virtual machines, terminal servers and business-critical servers. Microsoft’s supported-solution documentation shows that platform coverage varies by product, so a feature available on Windows may not exist on macOS or Linux.
Also check practical deployment limits:
- Can agents be installed through your current device-management system?
- Do older operating systems or specialized applications require exclusions?
- Can the platform protect devices that are off the corporate network?
- What happens when a laptop is offline for several weeks?
- Are shared terminals, domain controllers and cloud-hosted servers licensed and supported?
- Can the provider monitor devices owned by a subsidiary or contractor?
Count servers separately when pricing and risk are assessed. A single unprotected file server can undermine otherwise strong laptop coverage.
Compare integrations and investigative context
Endpoint telemetry is more useful when it can be correlated with other evidence. Compare integrations with identity and access management, email security, cloud services, firewalls, virtual private networks, SIEM platforms and ticketing systems. Determine whether an integration is real-time, one-way or merely an export.
Ask to see an example incident timeline. It should show how an analyst moves from a suspicious login to the user’s device, related email messages, cloud activity and other endpoints. If the provider cannot access those sources, the investigation may stop at “malware detected” without explaining how the attacker entered or whether credentials were reused.

Retention, hunting and evidence access
Retention is a security and cost decision. Short retention can make it impossible to reconstruct an intrusion discovered weeks after the first activity. Long retention can increase storage charges and privacy obligations. Ask for the exact number of days for raw events, alerts and enriched case data, and whether the period differs by endpoint type.
Advanced hunting should be tested with realistic questions: “Which devices ran this script in the last 30 days?” or “Where did this hash appear before the alert?” Confirm whether hunting is included, whether a customer administrator can run searches, and whether results can be exported for an investigation, regulator or insurer.
Total cost: include staff time and disruption
An EDR license is only one line in the budget. Calculate:
- Endpoint or user licensing, including servers and temporary devices.
- Deployment, onboarding and agent-health monitoring.
- Policy tuning, exclusions and software-update coordination.
- Training and the labor required to review, investigate and document alerts.
- On-call compensation or a separate incident-response retainer.
- Integration, storage, data-export and overage fees.
- Downtime and recovery costs when a response is delayed or an endpoint is isolated incorrectly.
MDR generally costs more per endpoint than an unattended EDR license because analyst time and process are included. It can still be less expensive overall when the alternative is hiring security staff, paying overtime, accepting unmonitored hours or suffering a longer incident. No universal price or percentage determines the right choice; obtain a quote for your endpoint count, coverage hours, retention and response authority.
Decision guide for common small-business situations
Choose EDR operated internally when
- You have a named person or team responsible for the alert queue and incident response.
- Coverage hours match the times your business is exposed, including planned on-call periods.
- Staff can investigate, tune policies and act without waiting for an unavailable specialist.
- You can test the response process and maintain current escalation contacts.
Choose MDR when
- No dependable team reviews alerts every day and outside office hours.
- IT staff routinely defer alerts because of competing operational work.
- Leadership wants an external party to investigate and coordinate technical response.
- The business needs threat hunting or incident expertise that it cannot hire economically.
Use both when
You prefer a particular EDR platform but need an external security operations center to monitor it. In this model, the EDR remains the technology layer and MDR supplies the people and process layer. Document which party owns the console, policy changes, endpoint isolation, account disabling, communications and post-incident review.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to implement EDR with an internal team
- Inventory and classify endpoints. Record operating system, owner, business function, network location and whether the device is a server or shared system.
- Define response authority. Decide who may isolate a laptop, stop a process, block a file or disable an account, and list exceptions for critical systems.
- Deploy in stages. Start with a pilot group that represents normal users, developers, administrators and servers. Monitor agent health and application compatibility before broad rollout.
- Set a review schedule. Specify queue checks, severity thresholds, escalation times and after-hours coverage. A dashboard that nobody reviews is not a monitoring program.
- Tune carefully. Document every exclusion, its owner, expiration date and reason. Prefer narrow exclusions over disabling a detection category.
- Test response. Use approved simulations or safe test files to verify alert delivery, ticket creation, device isolation and restoration. Do not test destructive malware on production systems.
- Integrate context. Connect identity, email, cloud, firewall and ticketing sources where supported, then confirm that an investigator can see a coherent incident timeline.
- Review and improve. Measure unresolved alerts, agent coverage, time to acknowledge and time to contain. Update runbooks after every real incident or exercise.
How to evaluate an MDR provider
- Request the service boundary. Get a list of covered endpoints, data sources, alert types, hours, languages and supported regions.
- Read the response matrix. It should distinguish actions the provider can take automatically, actions requiring approval and recommendations only.
- Examine a sample case. Look for evidence collection, scope analysis, analyst notes, customer notifications and a clear closure reason.
- Confirm platform ownership. Establish who holds administrative credentials, who pays for the EDR license and what happens to telemetry if the service ends.
- Check retention and export. Specify raw-event retention, case retention, hunting access and export formats before signing.
- Validate escalation. Call the emergency number, test the contact tree and confirm how the provider reaches an authorized decision-maker.
- Review privacy and geography. Determine where telemetry is stored, which personnel can view it and whether regional or contractual restrictions apply.
- Price the full term. Include onboarding, device changes, minimum endpoint counts, incident-response charges, integrations and early-termination terms.
EDR is one layer of a broader defense
CISA’s #StopRansomware guidance recommends application allowlisting and/or EDR on all assets so only authorized software executes and unauthorized software is blocked. It also recommends centrally managed antivirus with configured warning escalation. EDR or MDR cannot compensate for unpatched systems, stolen credentials, weak email controls or unusable backups.

Pair endpoint monitoring with timely patching, phishing-resistant identity controls where practical, multifactor authentication, email and web protections, network segmentation, tested offline or immutable backups and a written incident procedure. Test that procedure with the people who must make business decisions, not only with the IT administrator.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying a console without assigning an owner
Fix this by naming a primary and backup responder, defining review times and documenting the escalation path before deployment.
Assuming “24/7” means response authority
Ask whether analysts can take containment actions or only send notifications. Put the answer in the contract and playbooks.
Recommended Free Tools
Ignoring servers and non-Windows devices
Map every operating system and critical workload, then verify support and licensing for each one.
Creating broad exclusions to reduce noise
Investigate the cause of noisy detections and use narrow, time-limited exclusions with review dates.
Choosing on license price alone
Include staffing, training, retention, integrations, incident support and downtime in the comparison.
Failing to plan for provider or platform failure
Document emergency contacts, local containment options, evidence export and a fallback procedure if the console or MDR connection is unavailable.

Which option is right for your small business?
Choose internally operated EDR when you can prove continuous ownership: trained staff review alerts, investigate incidents, maintain the platform and act at the times your business needs protection. Choose MDR when that coverage does not exist or when you want an external team accountable for triage and coordination. Choose both when you want a specific EDR technology but need managed analysts to operate it.
Before committing, validate the current product edition, operating-system support, response actions, service-level agreement, retention period, data location and geography. Those details change by plan and over time, and they determine whether the protection you purchased will work during the incident you are trying to prevent.
