EDR is endpoint-security software, MDR is a human-operated detection-and-response service, and a SOC is the broader operating capability that monitors and handles security incidents. They overlap, but they are not interchangeable purchases. The right choice depends on which systems generate telemetry, who investigates alerts, who is allowed to contain an attack, and whether coverage is continuous.
A small company may buy MDR because it needs analysts without building a 24/7 team. An organization with security staff may buy EDR and run it internally. A company that needs identity, cloud, network and application monitoring may contract a managed SOC, sometimes alongside EDR or MDR.
The three terms in one view
- Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR): software that continuously records and analyzes activity on laptops, servers and other endpoints, then provides detections, investigation context and remediation controls.
- Managed Detection and Response (MDR): a service in which analysts use security technology to monitor, hunt, investigate, escalate and respond to threats for you. Microsoft describes MDR as combining advanced detection with rapid incident response, commonly with around-the-clock operations.
- Security Operations Center (SOC): the people, processes and facility responsible for monitoring and responding to security events. A SOC can be an internal team or an outsourced capability and can consume EDR, identity, cloud, network, SaaS and SIEM data.
NIST recognizes EDR as a formal cybersecurity term. The key distinction is that EDR describes a technology layer, MDR describes an operated service, and SOC describes an operating function. A single provider may package all three, but the labels alone do not tell you what is covered.
What you are buying with EDR
Continuous endpoint telemetry
EDR agents collect process, file, script, login and other activity from protected endpoints. The console correlates that activity, raises detections and preserves forensic context so an analyst can reconstruct what happened. Response controls may include isolating a device, stopping a process, quarantining a file or removing persistence.

Software, not guaranteed staffing
An EDR license gives your organization the platform and controls. It does not, by itself, guarantee that a human will review every alert, perform threat hunting, contact you overnight or carry out remediation. Your team must decide which alerts matter, investigate them and execute the available actions unless a separate service is attached.
Where EDR stops
Coverage is centered on enrolled endpoints. Identity-provider events, cloud-control-plane activity, firewall and network telemetry, SaaS audit logs and application events may require separate connectors or products. Ask exactly which operating systems and server types are supported, how inactive devices are handled and what retention period applies.
What you are buying with MDR
A managed operating service
MDR adds people and operating procedures around detection technology. Analysts monitor the incident queue, triage alerts, investigate suspicious activity, perform threat hunting, escalate confirmed incidents and recommend or execute response actions. Microsoft’s managed-security documentation says its analysts manage incident queues around the clock, investigate incidents and either take action or guide the customer through the response.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDoes MDR include EDR?
Often, MDR uses EDR, XDR or SIEM technology, but inclusion is a contract question rather than a definition. Some MDR packages supply an endpoint agent; others expect you to provide an existing EDR license; others combine endpoint, identity and cloud telemetry. Confirm the named products, license ownership, deployment responsibilities and what happens if an endpoint is not enrolled.

Response authority must be explicit
An MDR provider may be able to isolate a host, disable an account, block an indicator or change a security control. Those powers vary by service and customer approval rules. A plan advertised as “24/7” may provide continuous alert monitoring while requiring your approval for hands-on remediation. Get the permitted actions, approval windows, emergency exceptions and customer contacts in writing.
What a SOC actually is
An operating capability, not a single product
A SOC centralizes security monitoring and incident response. Its tooling can include EDR, identity analytics, cloud logs, network sensors, threat intelligence and a SIEM. Its staff define triage procedures, maintain escalation paths, investigate incidents and produce evidence for management or compliance.
Internal and managed SOCs
An internal SOC is staffed and governed by your organization. A managed SOC is supplied by an external security provider under an agreed scope and service levels. “SOC” in a product name can therefore mean a real team, a portal that forwards alerts, or a marketing description; ask who is actually on duty and what work they perform.

Why SOC scope is usually broader than EDR
Endpoint events are only one view of an intrusion. A SOC can correlate a suspicious login, an impossible-travel event, a new cloud access key, an endpoint process and an unusual network connection into one investigation. That wider view is useful when your risk is spread across identities, cloud workloads, applications and remote users.

EDR, MDR and managed SOC compared
| Purchase | Primary thing purchased | Typical responsibility | Main limitation to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| EDR | Endpoint software and telemetry | Your team operates the console and response controls | Staffing, triage and non-endpoint visibility may remain your responsibility |
| MDR | Managed detection-and-response service plus technology | Provider analysts monitor, investigate and respond under contract | Covered assets, response authority, exclusions and escalation rules |
| Managed SOC | External SOC capability | Provider operates monitoring and response across agreed data sources | Log sources, retention, staffing model, service levels and integration work |
How the options fit together
These are layers rather than mutually exclusive categories. EDR can supply endpoint evidence to an internal SOC. An MDR service can operate that EDR and add threat hunting. A managed SOC can ingest the MDR or EDR data while also monitoring identity, cloud and network sources. Your architecture may therefore contain all three labels, with different parties responsible for each layer.
Which option fits your organization?
Choose EDR first when you already have capable analysts
EDR is a sensible foundation when your team can review detections, investigate incidents, hunt for threats and execute containment during the hours your systems are exposed. Define an on-call plan for nights, weekends and holidays; otherwise the software may create alerts faster than your team can handle them.
Choose MDR when you need continuous help without a 24/7 staff
MDR suits organizations that want analysts monitoring and investigating continuously but do not want to recruit and operate a round-the-clock security operation. Check whether the service includes endpoint licensing, what other telemetry it accepts, and whether analysts can isolate systems or must wait for an authorized customer.

A managed SOC is the better fit when you need a team to run an operating process across identity, cloud, network, SaaS and application logs. It is especially relevant when several tools must be correlated and your organization needs formal incident reports, escalation and evidence handling.

Use a combined model when responsibilities are shared
Many organizations keep incident ownership internally while an MDR or managed SOC provides after-hours monitoring, specialist investigation or surge capacity. Define the handoff: who declares an incident, who communicates with executives, who preserves evidence and who closes the ticket.
The buying checklist that matters more than the label
1. Coverage and telemetry
- List every endpoint class, server, identity provider, cloud account, network device, SaaS platform and application you expect monitored.
- Record which sources are included in the base fee, which require connectors and which generate separate log-volume charges.
- Ask about agent deployment, unsupported systems, data residency and retention duration.
2. People and investigation work
- Identify who triages alerts, performs threat hunting, investigates incidents and writes the incident report.
- Ask whether named analysts, a pooled team or an automated queue handles your environment.
- Request an example investigation timeline showing notification, analyst actions, customer contact and closure evidence.
3. Response authority
- Specify whether the provider may isolate endpoints, disable accounts, block indicators, revoke sessions or change controls.
- Document approval requirements, emergency actions, customer contacts and the process for reversing a containment action.
- Define exclusions, such as production systems or executive accounts that cannot be touched automatically.
4. Availability and service levels
- Distinguish business-hours coverage, follow-the-sun staffing and 24/7/365 monitoring.
- Ask whether “24/7” means alert review only or includes investigation, customer notification and remediation.
- Put acknowledgement, escalation and response-time targets in the contract, including severity definitions and holiday coverage.
5. Integration, retention and data costs
- Confirm required agents, APIs, SIEM connectors, network changes and customer engineering effort.
- Establish how endpoint count and log volume affect recurring charges; managed SOC pricing commonly varies with both.
- Specify retention periods, export formats and whether you receive raw evidence when the contract ends.
6. Accountability and reporting
- Require a written responsibility matrix covering telemetry, monitoring, investigation, containment, recovery guidance and communications.
- Define the incident evidence and compliance reports you receive, their delivery schedule and the escalation path for missed service levels.
- Clarify ownership of detections, playbooks, threat-hunting results and forensic data.
Pricing in 2026: why there is no honest universal number
Public buyer guidance does not establish a single market-wide 2026 price for EDR, MDR or a managed SOC. Managed SOC pricing varies with endpoint count and log volume, while service scope, retention, integrations and response authority also change the quote. Compare proposals on the same asset list and telemetry volume, separating software licenses, analyst coverage, implementation work, data ingestion and any overage fees.
A low subscription can be misleading if it excludes cloud logs, limits retention, charges for every connector or requires your staff to approve every containment action. A higher quote may represent broader telemetry and hands-on response rather than simply a more expensive software license.
Common purchasing mistakes
Assuming MDR and EDR are duplicates
They solve different problems: EDR supplies endpoint visibility and controls; MDR supplies ongoing human operation. Verify whether the MDR contract includes an EDR license or operates software you already own.

Treating “SOC” as proof of broad coverage
A SOC can monitor only the data sources you connect. Make the source list and retention terms contractual instead of relying on the label.
Reading “24/7” as unlimited remediation
Continuous monitoring does not necessarily grant the provider permission to change systems. Match the service-level language to the response actions you actually need.
Ignoring the handoff to your team
Even a fully managed service needs customer contacts, asset owners and recovery decisions. Test the escalation path with a tabletop exercise before an incident occurs.

A practical selection process
- Inventory the environment: count endpoints and identify identity, cloud, network, SaaS and application data sources.
- Assign ownership: decide who monitors, investigates, authorizes containment, communicates and restores systems.
- Set coverage requirements: choose business-hours, follow-the-sun or 24/7/365 operations based on your risk and staffing.
- Request like-for-like proposals: give each provider the same asset list, log volumes, retention requirement and response scenarios.
- Review the responsibility matrix: reject any proposal that leaves telemetry, authority, escalation or evidence handling ambiguous.
- Validate the operation: run a controlled alert or tabletop exercise to confirm notification times, analyst actions and your team’s obligations.
The decision is ultimately about responsibility, not terminology. Buy EDR when you need the endpoint technology and can operate it; buy MDR when you need an external team to run detection and response; choose a managed SOC when the operating scope must include multiple telemetry domains. Whatever combination you select, make coverage, human actions, response permissions, availability, costs and evidence explicit in the contract.
