MCP and direct API tool calling put different parts of an AI agent integration under your control. MCP standardizes how an AI application discovers and calls server-provided capabilities; with a direct API flow, your application typically owns more of the tool schema, dispatch, and response handling. The available documentation does not establish what broke in a particular side-by-side build, so this guide identifies the documented failure surfaces to test rather than inventing results.
What MCP and direct API tool calling actually change
MCP is a protocol for context exchange between AI applications and servers. Its architecture documentation explicitly says it does not dictate how an application uses an LLM or manages the context it receives. A direct API tool-calling flow is an integration pattern: the application defines or supplies tool descriptions, receives model-selected arguments, calls the SaaS API, and returns a result.
The distinction is not “MCP instead of APIs.” An MCP server can call a SaaS API behind the scenes, and an AI application can support both direct function calling and remote MCP. OpenAI documents both as ways to provide model capabilities. The architectural question is which component owns discovery, dispatch, validation, credentials, and operational recovery.
Recommended Free Tools
MCP uses a client-server model. An AI host coordinates MCP clients, and each client connects to a server. The protocol’s data layer uses JSON-RPC 2.0 and supports capability and version negotiation, plus server-provided tools, resources, and prompts. Clients can discover tools with tools/list before calling them. See the MCP architecture documentation.

Where the two paths differ
| Concern | Direct API tool-calling flow | MCP flow |
|---|---|---|
| Tool contract | The application typically maintains tool definitions and passes them to the model. | The server advertises tools; the client can discover them dynamically through tools/list. |
| Dispatch | The application receives a model tool call and invokes the SaaS API. | The MCP client calls the server; the server validates and executes the requested tool. |
| Transport | Depends on the application’s integration with the SaaS API. | Supports local stdio and remote Streamable HTTP. Streamable HTTP uses HTTP POST, may use server-sent events, and supports HTTP authentication methods. |
| Integration ownership | More schema, dispatch, and response-handling logic remains in the application. | A shared protocol can reduce bespoke discovery and connection work when the host and server both support it; actual effort depends on the implementation. |
These are design differences, not a performance or reliability ranking. The official sources reviewed do not provide a controlled MCP-versus-direct-API benchmark.
How to make a fair comparison
Hold the user request, SaaS operation, permissions, expected output, model/provider, and failure policy constant. Otherwise a difference may come from the surrounding setup rather than the connection pattern. For each run, record the following:

- Advanced Features: Equipped with 2 GB LPDDR4 RAM, 16 GB eMMC built-in storage, ideal to develop in PC-connected mode, running the OS, Python scripts, and basic network services (SSH) without a demanding GUI or heavy multitasking; great for lightweight AI and memory-optimized TinyML applications, needing local storage for basic OS and core libraries. - Contract and discovery: Note where the tool schema lives, whether it is discovered at runtime, and what happens if a tool is missing, renamed, or changes its input schema.
- Dispatch and validation: Identify which component receives the selected arguments, validates them, calls the service, and formats the result. OpenAI’s remote MCP guide describes discovery, model-selected arguments, server validation and execution, and returning results.
- Transport and reachability: Record whether MCP uses stdio or Streamable HTTP, where the server runs, and whether the executing environment can reach it. A hosted service may not be able to access a server on a private network.
- Credentials and authority: Record which component holds each credential, whose permissions it represents, and which service validates that authority. Do not treat the model’s requested action as authorization.
- Approvals and side effects: Mark which operations need a person’s confirmation, especially actions that change data or expose sensitive information.
- Operational behavior: Capture initialization and discovery errors, timeouts, retry behavior, schema drift, logs, and recovery steps. Do not infer that one path is faster or more reliable from a small number of unmeasured runs.
Documented MCP failure surfaces to probe
The following are test cases implied by protocol and provider documentation, not reported failures from a specific build. The actual behavior depends on the host, provider, server, and application.

Make the server unavailable and observe whether the agent turn fails, waits, or can continue without that capability. Check the server URL and network route for HTTP; for stdio, check the executable, dependencies, and absolute working directory. OpenAI’s connection guidance includes troubleshooting for server connections. For hosted integrations, a private server may be unreachable; documented options include running from an environment with access or using the Secure MCP Tunnel in supported OpenAI integrations.

Dynamic tool changes
Test a tool that disappears, is renamed, or changes its input schema after discovery. MCP supports dynamic tool listings, but the protocol alone does not prescribe how a particular host or model responds to a stale or incompatible schema. Verify whether the integration refreshes discovery, rejects the call clearly, or requires an application change.
State carried between calls
Do not assume a connection or long-lived stdio process represents the user’s conversation or preserves request context. The MCP base specification, version 2026-07-28, describes MCP as stateless: each request must contain the information needed to process it, and servers must not infer request context from previous calls or connection identity. Use explicit identifiers when an operation needs cross-request state. See the 2026-07-28 base specification.

Token audience and upstream credentials
For HTTP authorization, the MCP authorization specification requires a token intended for the MCP server and prohibits passing that token through to an upstream API. If the server needs to call a SaaS provider, it needs a separately issued upstream credential. Test rejection of a token with the wrong audience and ensure logs or error responses do not expose secrets. See the authorization specification, version 2025-11-25.

Tool output and user-supplied content can influence an agent’s next step. Decide which actions require explicit approval, and test whether the approval applies to the actual operation and arguments being executed. OpenAI warns that tool-enabled systems can face prompt-injection risks and documents approval controls in its remote MCP guide.

The protocol specifications establish MCP’s architecture, transports, discovery model, and authorization requirements. OpenAI’s documentation describes its own integrations and controls. Those sources do not show that MCP is inherently faster, safer, cheaper, simpler, or more reliable than direct API calls, nor do they establish which approach failed in an undocumented build.
To answer the headline’s “what broke” question for a specific implementation, the useful evidence is a flow diagram and reproducible artifacts: tool schemas, configuration, logs, error outputs, retry and timeout settings, and results from equivalent requests. Without those, the responsible conclusion is limited to which failure modes are worth testing—not what happened in the build.
