If a Windows MCP client reports 'C:Program' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file., first check how the client is launching the server. In one reported setup, the client split the path to npx.cmd under C:Program Filesnodejs at the space. A workaround for that specific filesystem-server configuration was to use Node.js’s short path, C:PROGRA~1nodejsnpx.cmd, as the command. It is a reported workaround—not a universal MCP rule—and you should verify that the path exists on your machine.
What the “C:Program” error means
The exact error, 'C:Program' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file., can indicate that a launcher treated a path containing a space as separate pieces. In the reported Windows 11 case, Claude Desktop was configured to start @modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem, and Node.js was installed in its default C:Program Filesnodejs directory. The issue author said the client’s launch attempt split the path at the space and reported using the 8.3 short path as a workaround. Read the filesystem-server issue report.
This message does not, by itself, show that the MCP server package is broken. Other launch errors, including spawn npx ENOENT and EINVAL, can have different causes; diagnose the exact message and the client involved rather than applying one configuration blindly.

Try the short-path workaround for the reported filesystem setup
In the issue report, the workaround changes the configured command to the short path for npx.cmd, while leaving the package and server-specific values as separate arguments. A representative configuration shape is:

{
"command": "C:\PROGRA~1\nodejs\npx.cmd",
"args": [
"-y",
"@modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem",
"C:\path\to\allowed\directory"
]
}
Use the directory argument your filesystem server is meant to expose; the example path above is illustrative, not a required folder. The report’s setup used Claude Desktop on Windows 11 with Node.js under C:Program Filesnodejs. Its short-path suggestion is a user-reported workaround, not an official MCP standard or a guarantee for every Windows installation. See the original configuration report.
Verify the short path first
Do not assume that C:PROGRA~1 exists or points to the expected directory on every PC. Check the affected machine for the short alias and confirm that npx.cmd is present there. If it is absent, do not keep a configuration pointing to it; identify the actual launcher path available on that machine and follow the MCP client’s documented command format.

Check the client, command, and environment in order
- Record the full error and client version. Note whether you use Claude Desktop, Cursor, Copilot CLI, or another host, along with its version. Client-specific behavior matters: a Cursor community report says a configuration that failed there worked in VS Code. Read the Cursor community report.
- Find the launcher path the host is trying to run. Look in the MCP configuration and the client’s logs for
npxor a path beginning withC:Program Files. Confirm the executable or script exists at that location. - Check what the GUI client can see. A desktop host may not have the same environment or
PATHas a terminal window. Use the host’s own logs and configuration to check which launcher it resolves; the available reports do not establish one universalPATHfix. - Try a workaround that matches the host’s documented launch method. For the reported filesystem-server case, verify and try the short path. If the client expects shell invocation, consult its instructions before changing the configuration.
- Check for a host-specific fix. A Copilot CLI issue records a later stable-release fix for a separate Windows spawn problem. That does not establish that other MCP clients—or every
C:Programerror—were fixed by the same release. Review the Copilot CLI issue. - If it still fails, inspect the host’s MCP logs. Confirm the command and arguments are valid for that server, and check JSON escaping. Similar symptoms can come from different launchers or client wrappers, so the error text alone may not identify the root cause.
When a shell-based launch may apply
A Zscaler troubleshooting guide documents a Windows arrangement that launches cmd with /c and npx as an argument. This is a different approach from setting command directly to a short-path npx.cmd: it invokes a shell rather than changing the configured executable path. Use it only if your MCP host supports that command structure, and adapt the application-specific arguments to your own server instead of copying them unchanged. See Zscaler’s MCP troubleshooting guide.

Use the short path to npx.cmd |

Invoke cmd /c with npx |

These options are not interchangeable. A short path, a shell invocation, and a client update address different parts of the launch chain; the right next step depends on the actual host, version, command configuration, and error.
