You can use MCP to ask Claude or ChatGPT to create or revise a mind map by connecting the AI app to a mind-mapping service that exposes MCP tools. MCP is the connection standard—not the map editor or storage location. The service stores the map; the AI client sends your request and calls the service’s available tools.
What MCP does in a mind-mapping workflow
The Model Context Protocol project defines MCP as “an open-source standard for connecting AI applications to external systems.” In this workflow, Claude or ChatGPT is the client, and a mind-mapping service is the server. The service makes selected actions—such as creating a map or editing its branches—available to the client. What you can do depends on the tools that service exposes and the permissions you grant. Read the MCP introduction.
MindMap AI and Xmind document MCP connections for map creation and editing. Their setup processes differ: MindMap AI documents app-directory or connector flows, while Xmind documents a remote server URL and OAuth authorization. These vendors’ guides describe supported workflows; they do not establish which service produces better maps or works more reliably.

Connect MindMap AI to Claude
MindMap AI’s connector guide, last updated August 6, 2026, describes this OAuth 2.1 setup. The exact menu labels or availability may change.
#1 Best Overall
- In Claude, find MindMap AI in the connector directory, or open Settings > Connectors.
- Select Connect. In the redirect, sign in to MindMap AI or create an account.
- Review the requested permissions, then approve the OAuth authorization.
- Return to Claude and ask it to create a map, for example: “Create a mind map about the Butterfly Effect.”
- Open the resulting map in MindMap AI’s canvas to continue editing it.
MindMap AI says the connector can access authorized map projects and related metadata, but not billing details, passwords, or other account data outside maps and their metadata. These are the vendor’s statements; review its current privacy information and your organization’s rules before connecting sensitive work. You can remove access in Claude’s connector settings or revoke it in MindMap AI account settings. See MindMap AI’s Claude setup guide.
Connect MindMap AI to ChatGPT
MindMap AI’s guide describes connecting through ChatGPT’s app or plugin directory. Directory labels and account eligibility can vary, so follow the current prompts shown in your account.
- Find MindMap AI in ChatGPT’s directory, or open the relevant app settings and enable the connector.
- Select Connect, then sign in or create a MindMap AI account in the redirect.
- Review the requested permissions and approve the OAuth 2.1 authorization.
- Return to ChatGPT and request a map. MindMap AI gives “Turn this PDF into a mind map” as an example when attaching a file.
- To disconnect, remove the connector in ChatGPT’s app settings or revoke access from MindMap AI account settings.
MindMap AI says map content shown in ChatGPT is processed under OpenAI’s terms and privacy policy. Check applicable privacy and retention requirements before sharing work content. See MindMap AI’s ChatGPT setup guide.
Adding a custom MCP server in ChatGPT is a separate route
OpenAI’s instructions for custom MCP servers describe adding a server as a plugin in ChatGPT on the web: provide a name and server URL, configure authentication, review the risk notice, and create the plugin. The guide lists SSE and streaming HTTP as supported, and says tools can be toggled in app settings. Workspace permissions and security restrictions still apply. This manual custom-server process is distinct from MindMap AI’s directory or app connector flow. Read OpenAI’s custom MCP server instructions.
Connect Xmind to a compatible client
Xmind documents its MCP endpoint as https://app.xmind.com/api/mcp, using Streamable HTTP and OAuth authorization in a browser. Its guide gives these steps for Claude Desktop:
- Open Customize > Connectors.
- Select Add > Add custom connector.
- Enter
https://app.xmind.com/api/mcpas the server URL and connect. - Complete the browser authorization with your Xmind account.
Xmind says other MCP-compatible clients can use the same URL in their MCP settings, but setup depends on each client’s support. Its documentation does not establish the exact current ChatGPT clicks or workspace eligibility for this connection; check the client’s current MCP instructions before configuring it. Read Xmind’s MCP guide.
Xmind documents tools for creating maps, listing recent maps, reading content, editing topics, reorganizing branches, adding relationships and sheets, changing structure or theme, and handling task details. In its Claude setup, tool permissions can be set to Always allow, Need approval, or Blocked. Available actions depend on the client and permissions you configure.
Choose a connector based on the work you need to do
| Consideration | MindMap AI | Xmind |
|---|---|---|
| Connection path | Documented directory or app connector flows for Claude and ChatGPT, with OAuth 2.1. Vendor guide. | Documented remote MCP endpoint with Streamable HTTP and browser OAuth. Claude Desktop setup is specified; other clients depend on their support. Vendor guide. |
| Documented map actions | Create, search, view, edit nodes and relationships, change styling or layout, export, and delete. Vendor guide. | Create, list, read, edit topics, reorganize branches, add relationships and sheets, change structure or theme, and handle task details. Vendor guide. |
| Permission controls | Review requested permissions during authorization; the guide identifies some write and delete operations as destructive. Vendor guide. | The Claude guide documents per-tool choices: Always allow, Need approval, or Blocked. Vendor guide. |
| Credits and exports | According to MindMap AI, creating and editing consume account AI credits in proportion to change size; viewing, searching, and exporting do not. Available export formats depend on plan. Check current plan details. Vendor guide. | Credit consumption and export-plan details are not stated in the cited MCP guide. Vendor guide. |
| Data handling | Maps are in the MindMap AI account; content shown in Claude or ChatGPT is also processed under the respective AI platform’s terms and privacy policy. Vendor guide. | Review Xmind’s current terms and the AI client’s policies for your specific data-handling requirements. The cited MCP guide does not state detailed retention terms. Vendor guide. |
These documented capabilities are not an independent comparison of map quality, speed, reliability, or value. Choose based on the client you use, the operations you need, the approval controls available, and the policies that govern your data.
Rank #3
- 🎖️INK BLEED-THROUGH RESISTANT - Each AFMAT sticky easel pad comes with 30 sheets of premium paper that effectively resists ink bleed-through from markers, pens, and other writing tools, keeping your notes and ideas clean and legible on the page, not on what's under the page. (Note: It typically takes 3-4 seconds for ink to dry completely. To avoid smudging, please refrain from touching the freshly written content immediately after writing.)

Use prompts that make edits reviewable
Be specific about the map’s subject, branch structure, and desired changes. These are example requests, not guarantees that every server or client supports every action:
Turn these brainstorming notes into a mind map with decisions, open questions, and next actions as separate branches.Read my existing map and return a concise outline of its main branches.Add a branch for risks, connect each risk to the affected workstream, and show me the revised map before making further changes.
The preview request is useful when a task involves multiple edits: inspect the proposed revision before asking the connected service to apply more changes. Check the server’s tool list and approval settings rather than assuming that an instruction will be handled in a particular way.
Check permissions and data before authorizing
An MCP connection may have tools that write to or delete map content. OpenAI describes custom MCP connections as elevated risk: an untrusted server could access or steal information shared through app use, or prompt unintended actions such as changing or deleting data. OpenAI’s guidance explains the risk.
- Confirm that the server name and URL belong to the service you intend to connect.
- Inspect requested access and the available tools; use approval requirements or block tools you do not need when the client offers those controls.
- Be especially cautious with node updates, project deletion, and other destructive actions.
- Do not send sensitive or regulated material until you have checked the service’s policies, the AI platform’s terms, and your organization’s retention and data-sharing rules.
MindMap AI says it cannot control Claude’s or ChatGPT’s retention, deletion, or model-training decisions for content shared with those platforms. Check the current policies that apply to your accounts before using the connector for confidential material. MindMap AI’s connector guide.
