MCP can connect an AI application to procurement-relevant information and tools, but it does not guarantee accurate analysis or preserve citations by itself. To make AI-assisted research usable, capture each material finding with its own source record and supporting passage, then verify it before making a purchasing decision.
How can I use MCP for procurement research?
Model Context Protocol (MCP) is a connection protocol through which an AI application can obtain context and use tools exposed by external services. Its architecture separates the host (the AI application coordinating the work), clients (connections managed by the host) and servers (services that provide context or tools). The protocol governs context exchange; it does not prescribe how an application reasons over that context or whether its conclusions are sound. See the MCP architecture overview.
A practical example is the AWS Marketplace MCP server. AWS documents product discovery, vendor evaluation, side-by-side comparisons and proposal workflows as possible uses. That describes one service, not every MCP server and not evidence that using it improves procurement outcomes. AWS says its tools are stateless and that the schemas returned by tools/list are the canonical current definitions of tool parameters, types and constraints. Check those definitions when implementing an integration because available tools and schemas can change: AWS Marketplace MCP server documentation.

Write down the category, intended use, geography, mandatory certifications, budget range, contract constraints and evidence standard before querying a connected service. Otherwise, a broad natural-language prompt can quietly determine what gets compared—and omit requirements the buyer considers essential.

Connect sources that fit the question
Prefer relevant sources of record: official supplier catalogs, procurement records, specification pages, public contract documents or other appropriate primary records. Begin with read-only access where possible. If a workflow can alter records, submit feedback or create a proposal, identify that boundary and require a human review before taking action.
How do I keep evidence attached to AI research?
Store findings as structured records rather than relying on a chat transcript to preserve where an answer came from. Each material claim should point to its own source and the precise passage or field that supports it. A useful record includes:

- Claim: the specific statement being assessed.
- Source identity: source name and stable URL or record ID.
- Support: the exact excerpt, field or record section.
- Context: publication or update date, access date, version, geography and scope, when available.
- Limits: stated methodology, exclusions or other caveats.
- Assessment: whether the item is a reported fact, an unresolved discrepancy or an analytical inference.
Keep one source per record and link each claim to the records that support it. Do not combine a specification from one supplier with a price or claim from another and then attribute the combined statement to just one source. A 2026 preprint on source-aware verification calls this type of attribution error “cross-source conflation”; it is a documented risk, not a procurement-specific controlled finding. Separate what a source says from what the analysis concludes
Label catalog entries and supplier statements as reported facts. Label a synthesized judgment—such as “best fit”—as analysis, and identify which source records and criteria inform it. If sources conflict, retain both statements with their dates and scope, then explain the disagreement. Blending them into a single apparently settled fact hides uncertainty.

Can MCP compare suppliers or products?
Yes, if the connected service exposes suitable tools and the AI application uses them. AWS documents discovery, vendor evaluation and comparison workflows for its Marketplace MCP server. Those capabilities can help assemble information; they do not make an AI-generated ranking an independent procurement decision. Compare candidates against explicit criteria and inspect the underlying evidence.

These are evaluation questions, not a benchmark of suppliers or tools. AWS labels the read/write status of its listed tools, including a non-read-only feedback tool; consult the live tools/list definitions rather than assuming the inventory or behavior is unchanged.

How do I make AI procurement research auditable?
- Define the scope. Record the buying question, required criteria and acceptable evidence before connecting tools.
- Choose sources and access deliberately. Start with relevant read-only sources. Identify any operation that can change information or initiate a proposal, and put human approval before that action.
- Discover current capabilities. Confirm the server’s available tools and schemas. For the AWS Marketplace service, AWS identifies
tools/listas the canonical current source for tool definitions. - Capture claim-level provenance. Save the source identifier, supporting excerpt or field, dates, version, geography, scope and limitations with each finding.
- Preserve disagreement and uncertainty. Keep conflicting source statements separate and mark conclusions that are inferences rather than reported facts.
- Review before operational use. A buyer should check source links, specifications, commercial terms and mandatory requirements against the source of record before relying on a recommendation or generating a proposal.
- Log identity and activity. Use an appropriately restricted production identity and retain records that let reviewers determine which identity made calls and what it could access.
Apply least privilege to the identity behind calls
Permissions follow the identity used by an integration. Google Cloud says calls to its MCP servers made with a user’s identity carry that user’s permissions and are attributed to that user. For production, its guidance recommends a separate agent or workload identity with minimum necessary permissions. The guidance applies to Google and Google Cloud MCP servers; authentication options and authorization behavior can differ on other services. See Google Cloud authentication guidance.

MCP behavior depends on the specification version and the particular host, client and server. The specification revision dated 2026-07-28 requires support for JSON Schema 2020-12 when a schema does not declare another dialect, and says clients and servers must not automatically dereference network-based $ref URIs. These protocol rules do not by themselves secure a procurement workflow: server trust, identity, permissions, host behavior, logging and application policy still matter. Consult the MCP Basic Protocol specification alongside the documentation for the specific service you connect.
