MCP gives AI applications and external tools a shared way to communicate, much as USB-C gives devices a common connector standard. But the comparison has limits: MCP is software, not a physical plug, and using it does not make every AI compatible with every service—or make every server safe. A connection works only when the client and server support compatible protocol versions, transports, and capabilities.

What is MCP?

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open software protocol for connecting AI clients to external tools and data. It defines a common way for a client and server to exchange messages, rather than requiring a wholly different integration interface for each pairing. The official architecture documentation describes a JSON-RPC-based data layer and a separate transport layer.

In practice, an MCP client can discover capabilities exposed by a server, provide relevant information to a model, and pass along a model-selected tool call. The server validates the request and performs the operation; the client can then return the result to the model. OpenAI’s MCP server documentation describes this tool-call pattern.

Tools, resources, and prompts

  • Tools are actions a model can invoke, such as querying a connected service or carrying out an operation the server makes available.
  • Resources provide contextual information to the client.
  • Prompts are reusable interaction templates a server can expose.

A server may expose any relevant capabilities, and a client may support only some of them. Connecting does not grant access to capabilities that the server does not offer or the client cannot use.

Why the USB-C analogy works—and where it stops

The useful parallel is standardization: a shared interface can reduce the need to build a unique connection method for every compatible client and service. MCP gives implementations common conventions for representing and exchanging capabilities.

But USB-C suggests a physical connector and, to many people, a degree of interchangeability that MCP does not promise. MCP specifies how compatible implementations communicate; it does not mean every service has an MCP server, every client supports every feature, or two implementations necessarily work together without version and capability checks. The specification overview distinguishes optional components and transport choices.

Think of MCP as a common language, not a universal adapter. A service must expose an MCP server, the client must speak a compatible revision, and both sides must support the capabilities needed for the task.

What the current specification standardizes

Messages and capabilities

The data layer uses JSON-RPC and defines version and capability discovery, messaging patterns, and the tools, resources, and prompts primitives. Discovery helps a client learn what a server offers; it does not imply that all servers expose the same things.

Local and remote transports

The architecture documents two transport options: stdio for direct local process communication and Streamable HTTP for remote communication. Both use the general MCP message format, but connection setup, framing, and authorization depend on the transport. Choosing MCP therefore does not eliminate deployment or authentication decisions.

Revision 2026-07-28 and migration

The current specification identifies revision 2026-07-28. It describes stateless requests: required metadata travels with each request, and a server must not infer conversational continuity from a reused connection or process. The July 28, 2026 release retired the former initialization and session exchange in favor of self-describing requests and optional discovery. Because this revision includes breaking changes, developers should check the versions and migration notes for both client and server rather than assume existing implementations have upgraded.

The maintainers’ July 28, 2026 release post also describes Multi Round-Trip Requests, header-based routing, cache hints, authorization hardening, a formal extensions framework, and updated TypeScript, Python, Go, and C# Tier 1 SDKs. The post notes migration costs for developers relying on session identifiers; these are the maintainers’ release claims, not a guarantee that every implementation has adopted the changes.

Does MCP let any AI connect to any tool?

No. A claim that a product “supports MCP” is only a starting point. Compatibility depends on the protocol revision and capabilities each side implements, the transport in use, and what the particular server exposes. A client that can communicate with an MCP server still cannot use a tool the server does not provide or a feature it does not support.

Is it safe to connect an MCP server?

Protocol compatibility is not a security endorsement. An MCP server may expose tools that access private information or take actions. Before connecting one, identify who operates it, inspect the exposed tools and their effects, and understand the permissions and credentials it receives. A shared message format does not certify the behavior of the server on the other end.

For remote production systems that handle private data or act on a user’s behalf, OpenAI’s developer guidance on MCP servers calls for protecting production servers. The MCP authorization specification discusses authorization for remote access; consult the current specification before implementation. The MCP tool guidance also recommends making exposed tools clear in the user interface and allowing a human to deny invocations.

In practical terms, grant only the access a task requires, make meaningful actions visible to users, and decide where confirmation is needed. The right controls depend on what the server can do and what information it can reach.

What adoption figures and examples actually show

The MCP maintainers reported in their July 28, 2026 post that Tier 1 SDKs saw “close to half-a-billion downloads a month,” and that the TypeScript and Python SDKs had each passed one billion total downloads. These are download figures reported by the project maintainers—not counts of unique developers, active installations, production systems, or interoperable services.

The same post names Amazon Bedrock AgentCore as offering the new stateless core and says Cloudflare’s Agents SDK supports the revision, including MCP servers on Workers. These are examples of ecosystem infrastructure, not requirements for using MCP. The post’s characterization of the release as a major step forward is the maintainers’ perspective, not independent proof of universal adoption or safety.
