There is no universal winner between the McLaren 750S and Ferrari 296 GTB. The 750S suits a driver who wants a lightweight, combustion-focused supercar with a twin-turbo V8, hydraulic steering and minimal hybrid complexity. The 296 GTB suits someone who wants a twin-turbo V6 working with an electric motor and the highest stated combined output.
That makes this a priorities decision rather than an objective ranking. Your answer depends on whether you value low mass and steering feedback, or hybrid assistance and system power, and whether most of your miles will be on public roads, a circuit, or both.
At a glance: the deciding differences
| Decision point | McLaren 750S | Ferrari 296 GTB |
|---|---|---|
| Powertrain | 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 | 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6 paired with an electric motor |
| Published output | 740 hp and 590 lb-ft, according to McLaren | Ferrari-hosted technical material reports 610 kW (830 cv) combined; verify the document is specifically a 296 GTB specification before treating this as definitive |
| Transmission | Seven-speed SSG | Hybrid-specific transmission details vary by specification; confirm the exact car’s equipment sheet |
| Published top speed | 206 mph (McLaren US material) | Not established in the supplied official material |
| Published weight | 1,389 kg DIN kerb or 1,277 kg dry-lightest on McLaren’s model page; US material lists 3,062 lb DIN kerb and 2,815 lb dry-lightest | No directly comparable official curb-weight figure was established |
| Steering and feedback | McLaren emphasizes hydraulic steering and driver feedback | Driving character combines Ferrari chassis tuning with electric assistance; compare the specific car in person |
| Historical price context | Top Gear’s June 4, 2024 road-and-track comparison described both at around £240,000 in the UK. That is historical editorial context, not a current transaction price. | |
The table contains figures from different measurement conventions and dates. A dry weight cannot be compared directly with a DIN kerb weight, and a UK price from 2024 should not be used to budget for a 2026 purchase in another market.

Powertrain philosophy: V8 response versus hybrid thrust
McLaren 750S: a high-output twin-turbo V8
McLaren describes the 750S as using a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8. Its published maximums are 740 hp and 590 lb-ft, delivered through a seven-speed SSG transmission. McLaren’s official US material also gives a 206 mph top speed.

The important distinction is not only the number of cylinders. The 750S is organized around a conventional combustion engine, a relatively low published mass and direct mechanical responses. There is no electric motor adding a second source of propulsion, so the driver’s impressions are shaped by turbocharged V8 torque, gear selection, engine sound and the calibration of the dual-clutch transmission.
That formula appeals to drivers who want the engine to remain the central event. It also makes the car’s published weight especially relevant: less mass can affect braking, turn-in and changes of direction, although the figures must be read using their stated DIN-kerb or dry-lightest definitions.
Ferrari 296 GTB: a twin-turbo V6 with electric assistance
Top Gear describes the 296 GTB as a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6 paired with an electric motor. Ferrari-hosted technical material returned in search results reports a combined maximum of 610 kW, or 830 cv, at 8,000 rpm. Because the returned PDF is identified in its URL as “SC40,” verify the document title and technical table before using that number as a confirmed 296 GTB specification.
The hybrid layout changes how output arrives. The engine and electric motor can contribute in different operating phases, and the combined figure represents system output rather than the engine alone. In practical terms, a 296 buyer is choosing electric assistance as part of the car’s character, not merely buying a larger headline number.
That can be attractive if you want immediate electric response blended with a high-revving combustion engine. It can be less attractive if your ideal supercar experience is defined by a single engine’s uninterrupted sound and response. Neither preference is objectively superior; they describe different reasons for owning a mid-engined Ferrari or McLaren.
How the published performance figures should be read
Output is not a complete performance verdict
The 296 GTB’s reported 830 cv combined output is higher than the 750S’s published 740 hp, but the figures are not a complete prediction of which car will feel faster in every situation. Hybrid-system output, battery state, gearing, traction control and the way each manufacturer defines its units all matter. The Ferrari figure also needs document-level confirmation because of the filename mismatch noted above.

The 750S’s 740 hp and 590 lb-ft are manufacturer-published figures for the car’s combustion powertrain. They are easier to interpret as an engine-and-driveline specification, but they still do not describe throttle mapping, shift timing or how much performance a driver can use on a public road.
Top speed and usable performance
McLaren lists a 206 mph top speed for the 750S in US material. No directly comparable 296 GTB top-speed figure was established in the supplied official material, so this article does not infer a winner from an absent number.
For normal road driving, usable performance is more important than a theoretical maximum. Consider how often you can use full throttle, how comfortably you can modulate torque in traffic or wet conditions, and whether the sound and response you want are available at legal speeds. A test drive on representative roads is more informative than comparing isolated brochure numbers.
Weight: the numbers are meaningful only with their labels
What McLaren publishes
McLaren’s model specifications give the 750S a 1,389 kg DIN kerb weight and a 1,277 kg dry-lightest figure. Its US material lists 3,062 lb DIN kerb and 2,815 lb dry-lightest. These are not interchangeable measurements: DIN kerb includes a defined operating condition, while dry-lightest describes a lighter configuration without the same fluids and equipment assumptions.
Why a direct Ferrari comparison is not available here
The official Ferrari material available for this comparison did not establish a directly comparable 296 GTB curb-weight number. Do not place an unlabelled Ferrari figure beside McLaren’s DIN kerb number or claim that one car is lighter based on dry weight versus kerb weight.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If mass is central to your decision, ask the retailer for the exact car’s homologated kerb weight, the options fitted, wheel and tire sizes, and whether the figure includes fuel. Then compare like with like: kerb to kerb, or dry to dry, using the same regional convention.

Weight distribution
Ferrari-hosted material returned in search results reports a 41.5 percent front and 58.5 percent rear distribution. As with the 830 cv figure, verify that the PDF is a 296 GTB document before relying on the statistic. Weight distribution is useful context, but it does not replace a drive: suspension rates, tire specification, electronic controls and alignment also shape balance.
Steering, chassis and driver feedback
Why the 750S’s hydraulic steering matters
McLaren specifically emphasizes hydraulic steering and driver feedback for the 750S. Hydraulic assistance can provide a distinct sense of load building at the front axle, which matters to drivers who use steering weight and surface information to judge grip. The benefit is subjective but central to the 750S’s identity.
McLaren also lists carbon-ceramic brakes and active rear aerodynamics. Those features indicate a chassis designed to support repeated high-performance driving, but equipment alone does not tell you how the car behaves on your preferred road or circuit. Check brake pedal feel, low-speed ride, steering effort and the way the rear aero system integrates with the car’s drive modes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat to assess in the 296 GTB
The 296 GTB brings Ferrari’s chassis development together with a hybrid powertrain. During a drive, pay attention to how the electric motor fills torque, how regenerative braking affects pedal consistency, and whether the transition between electric assistance and engine power feels natural to you.
Do not assume that hybrid assistance makes the Ferrari less involving or that a V8 automatically feels more engaging. The relevant question is which responses you notice and enjoy: engine sound, instant electric torque, steering texture, brake modulation, or the ability to place the car precisely at corner entry.
Which is better for road driving?
Choose the 750S for a combustion-first road experience
The McLaren is the more natural fit if your road use is built around engine character and low-mass responses. Its V8 provides the defining soundtrack and torque delivery, while the hydraulic steering gives you a specific mechanical connection that McLaren highlights in its own positioning.

On public roads, however, the car’s capabilities will rarely be fully exploitable. That makes controllability and feedback more important than the 206 mph headline. Drive it over the surfaces you actually use, including urban streets, uneven back roads and motorway sections. Confirm that the seating position, visibility, lift system, luggage capacity and noise level work for your routine rather than assuming that a supercar’s specification sheet answers those questions.
Choose the 296 GTB if hybrid response suits your roads
The Ferrari is the better match if you want the electric motor to be part of every acceleration event and value the reported combined system output. Hybrid assistance can make the powertrain feel technologically distinctive, but your assessment should include low-speed transitions, charging and energy-management behavior, and the ease of selecting the modes you prefer.
Ask to drive the car in the conditions that matter to you. A short, traffic-free demonstration may show acceleration but reveal little about regenerative braking, maneuverability, visibility or the smoothness of the hybrid system in daily use.
Road-use checklist
- Drive both cars on similar roads, not only a showroom loop.
- Test cold-start behavior, low-speed throttle control and parking visibility.
- Check seat comfort and driving position for the longest trip you expect to make.
- Evaluate ride quality with the suspension settings you would use every day.
- Ask how the retailer supports servicing, software updates, hybrid-system checks and replacement consumables in your region.
Which is better on track?
Top Gear published a road-and-track comparison of the 750S and 296 GTB on June 4, 2024. That article is useful independent context because it considers both environments, but it is not a substitute for driving the exact specification you plan to buy. Tire choice, optional equipment, weather, circuit layout and driver experience can change the result.
Track priorities for the 750S
The 750S’s low published weight, hydraulic steering, carbon-ceramic brakes and active rear aerodynamics are relevant to circuit use. A driver who prioritizes clear steering loads, repeatable braking and a combustion engine’s rhythm may prefer this combination.
Recommended Free Tools
Before a track day, confirm brake-pad and tire availability, recommended pressures, cooling requirements and the effect of the chosen aerodynamic or suspension settings. Manufacturer capability does not remove the need for a preparation plan.

Track priorities for the 296 GTB
The Ferrari’s hybrid system and reported higher combined output may appeal to a driver who values strong acceleration and electric assistance between corners. The key evaluation points are how consistently the system delivers power over repeated laps, how battery state affects the available modes, and whether the brake and throttle transitions remain predictable as temperatures rise.
Ask the retailer or Ferrari service department for the current track-use guidance for your market and specification. Do not assume that a road-car mode or a headline output figure guarantees a particular lap-time advantage.
A fair comparison method
- Use cars with comparable tire condition, fuel level and optional equipment.
- Warm both cars fully and allow equal cooling time between sessions.
- Drive each car with its standard road setup first, then compare any track modes separately.
- Record steering confidence, brake consistency, throttle response and fatigue, not just one lap time.
- Have an experienced instructor or coach evaluate your technique before drawing conclusions from a single session.
Price, availability and buying risk
Do not treat £240,000 as a current universal price
Top Gear’s June 2024 comparison described both cars as costing around £240,000 in the UK at that time. That figure is historical and market-specific. It does not establish a 2026 transaction price, a used-car value, an option-adjusted total or availability in another country.
Prices, taxes, allocations, dealer premiums, options and delivery dates vary by market. Obtain written quotes for the exact specification, including registration charges, taxes, warranty terms, service plans and any required inspection. If you are considering a nearly new or used car, request its build sheet and verify whether the quoted weight, brake package and hybrid equipment match the advertised car.
Availability is a separate question from price
A retailer may be able to quote a car without having one available for a meaningful test drive. Ask specifically whether the demonstrator is a 750S or 296 GTB, which body and wheel configuration it has, and whether a drive can include the roads or circuit conditions relevant to your decision.
McLaren’s official model material directs prospective buyers to a retailer and describes a circuit driving experience with a personal driving coach. Geography, eligibility and booking availability can change, so confirm those details directly before making plans.
A decision framework by driver type
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Hydraulic steering feel and a direct mechanical connection | McLaren 750S | McLaren explicitly emphasizes hydraulic steering and driver feedback. |
| A combustion-focused V8 experience | McLaren 750S | Its 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 is the sole propulsion architecture described for the car. |
| Hybrid assistance and maximum stated system output | Ferrari 296 GTB | It pairs a twin-turbo V6 with an electric motor; Ferrari-hosted material reports 610 kW (830 cv), pending document verification. |
| The lowest published McLaren mass | McLaren 750S | McLaren publishes 1,277 kg dry-lightest, but that must not be compared directly with a Ferrari kerb figure. |
| A balanced road-and-track evaluation | Drive both | Top Gear’s comparison covers both settings, while your tires, options, roads and driving style may differ. |
| Buying with a firm 2026 budget | Local retailer quotes | No current, comparable transaction price or inventory figure is established for a defined market. |
Questions to ask before you sign
- What is the exact homologated kerb weight of this car, and which options are included?
- Which tires, brakes and suspension specification are fitted to the demonstrator?
- Can I drive both cars on similar roads and, if relevant, book a supervised circuit session?
- What are the service intervals, warranty limits and hybrid-system coverage in my country?
- What is the all-in price after taxes, registration, options, delivery and dealer charges?
- What is the expected lead time, and is the quoted vehicle actually allocated or merely orderable?
- For a used car, can you provide the complete build sheet, service history and software or battery inspection records?
Bottom line for your choice
Buy the McLaren 750S if you want the lightest published McLaren configuration, a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, hydraulic steering and a deliberately combustion-centered experience. Buy the Ferrari 296 GTB if the idea of a twin-turbo V6 working with an electric motor is more compelling and you place greater value on hybrid-system output than on a V8-only layout.
Before committing, drive both in comparable conditions and obtain current local quotes. The specification evidence supports a clear difference in philosophy, not a universal winner.
