Mbps means megabits per second, while MB/s means megabytes per second. The lowercase b is a bit; the uppercase B is a byte. Because one byte contains eight bits, divide a Mbps figure by eight to get its idealized decimal MB/s equivalent. A 100 Mbps connection therefore corresponds to 12.5 MB/s before real-world transfer conditions are considered.
This is a unit conversion, not a guarantee that a download will run at the calculated rate. Internet plans normally advertise network speed in bits per second, whereas operating systems and file-transfer tools usually show file sizes and transfer rates in bytes. Understanding the distinction prevents you from mistaking a normal unit change for a slow connection.
What Mbps and MB/s mean
Bits and bytes are different units
A bit is a single binary digit, represented by a lowercase b. A byte is a group of eight bits. The NIST CSRC glossary defines a byte as “A sequence of eight bits.” Bytes are commonly used for file sizes, storage capacity and the transfer-rate readout in many applications.

When a number describes how quickly data moves, the unit adds “per second.” A megabit per second is written Mbps; a megabyte per second is written MB/s. The units describe the same kind of measurement—data transferred over time—but they count different-sized pieces of data.

| Notation | Full name | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| bit (b) | Binary digit | Smallest data unit |
| byte (B) | Eight bits | Files, memory and storage |
| Mbps | Megabits per second | Internet and network-plan speeds |
| MB/s | Megabytes per second | Download, upload and disk-transfer displays |
Network providers use bits because a bit-based rate produces a larger-looking number for the same physical data flow. A file manager may show the resulting transfer in megabytes per second, so the two screens can appear to disagree even when they describe the same performance.
Why the lowercase b and uppercase B matter
Capitalization is part of the unit, not a styling preference. Mb means megabits; MB means megabytes. Confusing them creates an eightfold error.
Microsoft’s terminology guidance uses Mbps for megabits per second, MBps for megabytes per second, MB for megabyte and B for byte. Writing MB/s, as in this article’s title, is also an unambiguous way to express megabytes per second. See the Microsoft Style Guide bit and byte terms for those conventions.
- 100 Mbps is not 100 MB/s; it is 12.5 MB/s under decimal units.
- 100 MB/s is 800 Mbps under the same convention.
- 100 Mb/s and 100 MB/s differ by a factor of eight even though they look similar.
Some software writes “MBps” instead of “MB/s.” The capitalization still carries the meaning. If an application does not explain its abbreviation, look for a unit selector or help text before comparing its number with an internet plan.

- Mbps ÷ 8 = MB/s
- MB/s × 8 = Mbps
The factor of eight comes from eight bits per byte, not from an internet-provider policy or a speed-test adjustment. NIST lists a megabit as 1,000,000 bits and a megabyte as 1,000,000 bytes, so one decimal MB/s equals eight decimal Mbps. The relevant unit definitions are in NIST’s SI and binary-prefix reference.
Common network rates converted
| Advertised network rate | Idealized decimal equivalent |
|---|---|
| 8 Mbps | 1 MB/s |
| 25 Mbps | 3.125 MB/s |
| 100 Mbps | 12.5 MB/s |
| 1,000 Mbps (1 Gbps) | 125 MB/s |
These values are arithmetic equivalents. They do not promise that a browser, game launcher or cloud application will sustain the right-hand figure.

Suppose a speed test reports 350 Mbps and a download window reports MB/s. Divide 350 by 8:
350 Mbps ÷ 8 = 43.75 MB/s
If the application shows roughly 44 MB/s, the two readings are broadly consistent. A materially lower number may reflect the application’s conditions, a different prefix, or the fact that the advertised rate is an idealized network capacity rather than a guaranteed application throughput.
Decimal megabytes and binary mebibytes
The simple divide-by-eight rule assumes decimal prefixes. A decimal megabyte (MB) is 1,000,000 bytes, and a decimal megabit (Mbit) is 1,000,000 bits. NIST defines a mebibyte (MiB) separately as 1,048,576 bytes. The prefixes are not interchangeable.

| Unit | Definition | Where it may appear |
|---|---|---|
| MB | 1,000,000 bytes | Decimal file or transfer notation |

| Mbit | 1,000,000 bits | Decimal bit-rate notation |
A network plan labeled Mbps normally uses decimal megabits. If a tool reports MiB/s, converting Mbps to MB/s first is not enough; you must also account for the larger binary unit. For example, 100 Mbps is 12.5 decimal MB/s, which is approximately 11.92 MiB/s because 1 MiB contains 1.048576 decimal MB. The exact display can vary with the software’s chosen convention.

If a comparison mixes decimal and binary units, label both units explicitly so a small apparent discrepancy is not mistaken for lost bandwidth.
Why a 100 Mbps plan does not show 100 MB/s
The plan and the download window are using different units. Start with the plan’s 100 megabits per second, divide by eight bits per byte, and obtain 12.5 megabytes per second. Seeing a value near 12.5 MB/s is therefore the expected unit conversion—not evidence that the connection is running at only one-eighth of its advertised speed.
The result is still theoretical. The NTIA broadband reference guide presents download durations as approximate, and an advertised rate describes the network service rather than a guaranteed rate for every file transfer. The server, route, protocol, local network and current traffic can all affect what an application displays. Treat the conversion as an upper-bound estimate for a favorable transfer, not a promise.
Estimating how long a download will take
The calculation
Use the rate in the same unit as the file size:
- Convert the network rate from Mbps to MB/s by dividing by eight.
- Express the file size in decimal megabytes if you are using decimal MB/s.
- Divide file size in megabytes by transfer rate in megabytes per second.
- Label the result an estimate because the observed rate can change during the transfer.
Estimated seconds = file size in MB ÷ expected rate in MB/s

Worked download estimates
The following examples use decimal sizes (1 GB = 1,000 MB) and the idealized rates from the conversion formula:
| File size | Network plan | Idealized rate | Approximate time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 GB | 25 Mbps | 3.125 MB/s | 320 seconds (about 5 minutes 20 seconds) |
| 1 GB | 100 Mbps | 12.5 MB/s | 80 seconds (about 1 minute 20 seconds) |
| 10 GB | 100 Mbps | 12.5 MB/s | 800 seconds (about 13 minutes 20 seconds) |
| 1 GB | 1,000 Mbps | 125 MB/s | 8 seconds |
These are arithmetic projections, not measured guarantees. A file labeled 1 GB by one program may be shown as roughly 0.93 GiB by another because binary and decimal size conventions differ.
Why your download can be slower than the converted rate
First check that you are comparing like with like: a plan in Mbps against an application reading in MB/s, or a plan in Mbps against a speed test that also reports Mbps. After conversion, a lower observed transfer is possible because the calculated value represents an idealized rate. NTIA describes download timing as approximate rather than exact, so a changing or lower result is not automatically a unit mistake.
Use this troubleshooting sequence
- Identify the unit. Confirm whether each number says Mbps, Mb/s, MB/s or MiB/s. Pay particular attention to the letter’s capitalization.
- Convert once. Divide the plan’s Mbps value by eight before comparing it with a byte-based transfer display. Do not divide again if the application already reports MB/s.
- Check the prefix. Establish whether the application uses decimal MB or binary MiB. A decimal/binary mismatch produces a smaller difference than the eightfold bit/byte mistake, but it still prevents an exact match.
- Compare the same activity. A speed-test result and a file download are different observations. The test may show network capacity while the file transfer is limited by its source, route or current conditions.
- Watch the rate over time. A brief peak or dip is not equivalent to the sustained average needed for the whole file. Use the average shown after enough data has transferred.
- Recalculate the expected time. Use the actual average MB/s in the estimate formula rather than the plan’s headline rate if you need a realistic completion time.
This process separates a notation error from a genuine performance difference without assuming that every lower number indicates a fault.
Practical examples for everyday devices
Reading an internet-plan advert
If a plan is advertised as 500 Mbps, divide by eight to obtain an idealized 62.5 MB/s. A file-transfer window showing a value in that neighborhood is using bytes, while the provider’s number is using bits. Neither number is a file size; both are rates.

Reading a storage or backup display
If a backup tool reports 20 MB/s, multiply by eight to express the same rate in network units: 160 Mbps. This lets you compare the transfer with a plan or network specification that uses Mbps. The multiplication changes the unit, not the amount of data being moved.
Reading a gigabit connection
“Gigabit” usually refers to 1,000 Mbps. Under decimal units, that is 125 MB/s. A tool using MiB/s will show approximately 119.2 MiB/s for the same idealized bit rate, because a MiB is larger than a decimal MB.
Common mistakes and the correct interpretation
- Assuming 100 Mbps equals 100 MB/s: the uppercase B would represent eight times as much data per displayed unit. Convert by dividing the Mbps figure by eight.
- Ignoring capitalization: Mb and MB are not alternate spellings. Treat them as different units.
- Calling a calculated rate a guarantee: the conversion expresses an idealized equivalent; an application’s sustained rate can differ.
- Mixing MB and MiB without labeling them: decimal and binary prefixes use different byte counts. Keep the prefix visible in calculations and tables.
- Using file size as if it were speed: MB is an amount of data; MB/s is an amount per unit of time. The “/s” is essential.
- Comparing a one-time peak with a whole-download average: completion time depends on the rate sustained over the transfer, not merely the highest instantaneous reading.
A quick conversion checklist
- Circle the unit’s b or B.
- Confirm whether the value is “per second.”
- For Mbps to MB/s, divide by 8.
- For MB/s to Mbps, multiply by 8.
- Check whether MB or MiB is being used.
- Describe the result as an estimate unless it is a measured transfer under stated conditions.
Keeping those six checks together prevents the most common interpretation errors when moving between an internet plan, a speed test, a browser download and a storage utility.
