Mbps means megabits per second, while MB/s means megabytes per second. The capital B matters: one byte contains eight bits, so divide Mbps by eight to convert it to the ideal equivalent in MB/s. A 100 Mbps connection therefore corresponds to 12.5 MB/s before real-world transfer conditions affect the measured result.
What do Mbps and MB/s mean?
Both are data-transfer rates: they describe how much data moves in a given time. The difference is the unit being counted:
- Mbps means megabits per second. The lowercase b stands for bits. NIST’s glossary identifies Mbps as “Megabit per second” (NIST CSRC glossary).
- MB/s means megabytes per second. The uppercase B stands for bytes.
Internet plans and many speed tests express connection rates in bits per second, while download applications commonly display the amount transferred in bytes per second. NTIA’s Broadband Reference Guide explains the distinction between connection speed in bits per second and data measured in bytes.

How do you convert Mbps to MB/s?
One byte is eight bits. To convert a rate from megabits per second to megabytes per second, divide by eight; to convert back, multiply by eight. NTIA’s guide states the relationship as “1 byte = 8 bits.”

| Convert | Calculation | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Mbps to MB/s | Mbps ÷ 8 | 100 Mbps ÷ 8 = 12.5 MB/s |
| MB/s to Mbps | MB/s × 8 | 12 MB/s × 8 = 96 Mbps |
These are unit conversions, not performance guarantees. For example, the 100 Mbps to 12.5 MB/s calculation says what the rate would be if only the bit-to-byte relationship were involved.
Why does a 100 Mbps plan download at about 12 MB/s?
Because the numbers use different units. A 100 Mbps connection has an ideal equivalent of 12.5 MB/s; a download display near 12 MB/s is in the same general range, not evidence by itself that the connection is eight times slower. BroadbandNow uses a 100 Mbps plan and a download around 12 megabytes per second to illustrate this difference (BroadbandNow’s Mbps and MB/s explainer).

A measured download can differ from the ideal conversion. The conversion accounts for the size of the units; it does not account for every condition affecting a transfer. NTIA identifies bandwidth and file size as factors in transfer time, and BroadbandNow notes that actual download performance may differ from an advertised rate. There is no single overhead percentage that applies to every download.
Is Mbps a file size or a speed?
Mbps is a rate: it describes data transferred per second. A file’s size is an amount of data, usually expressed in bytes, such as MB. To estimate a download duration, you need both a file size and a transfer rate, and the result remains an estimate because actual transfer performance can vary. Keep the size and rate units distinct when comparing them.

What the conversion does—and does not—tell you
- It tells you the equivalent rate in a different unit. Divide Mbps by eight to express the ideal equivalent in MB/s.
- It does not predict an exact application reading. Real transfer conditions are not captured by the unit conversion alone.
- It does not combine other connection measures. Upload speed and latency are separate measures; neither is part of converting Mbps to MB/s.
