There is no official or universally agreed ranking of Mazda’s greatest cars. This history-led list weighs engineering significance, motorsport, recognition, historical influence, and each vehicle’s impact on Mazda’s lineup. It treats related names such as Miata and Roadster, or Familia and 323, as model families, and includes one race car because its achievement is central to Mazda’s history. The order is an editorial judgment, not a Mazda-published top eleven.

The 11 best Mazda cars, ranked by historical significance

1. Mazda MX-5 Miata / Roadster

Launched in 1989, the MX-5 brought a lightweight sports car into Mazda’s lineup and became one of the company’s defining models. Mazda uses the names MX-5, Miata, and Roadster in different markets; here they refer to the same model family. The fourth-generation MX-5 won both World Car of the Year and World Car Design of the Year in 2016, according to Mazda’s corporate timeline. Mazda Integrated Report 2024

2. Mazda Cosmo Sport

The 1967 Cosmo Sport was Mazda’s first rotary-engine vehicle and a landmark in the company’s engineering history. Mazda’s 2024 report says, “The world’s first two-rotor rotary engine was installed in Cosmo Sport (110s), which went on the market.” The “world’s first” description is Mazda’s claim, based on Mazda data as of 1967. 3. Mazda RX-7

Introduced in 1978, the RX-7 carried the rotary engine into a dedicated sports-car line. Its racing record helped strengthen Mazda’s motorsport identity: the company’s timeline records the Savanna RX-7 reaching 100 IMSA series wins in 1990. That figure applies to the RX-7’s series wins, not to all Savanna-family production. Mazda also records the third-generation RX-7, introduced in 1991, with a twin-turbo 13B rotary engine and the inaugural RJC New Car of the Year award. 4. Mazda 787B

The 787B belongs on a list of Mazda’s most important cars even though it was built for competition rather than ordinary road use. 6. Mazda Familia / 323

The Familia—known as the 323 in export markets—was an important part of Mazda’s broad passenger-car history. Mazda’s timeline records a 1980 award for the Familia/GLC/323, while its historical highlights also note Japan Car of the Year recognition for the Familia. Because names and award references vary across markets and generations, those milestones should not be assigned to every version of the model family. 7. Mazda Savanna / RX-3

The Savanna family, including the RX-3, helped establish Mazda’s rotary-powered performance reputation before the RX-7. Mazda’s timeline records one million cumulative production units for the Savanna family by 1990. The company groups RX-3, RX-7, and related Savanna models in that total, so it is not an RX-3-only production figure. Mazda History (1990–1999) · Mazda Great Cars of Mazda

9. Mazda6 / Atenza

Launched in 2002, the Mazda6—called Atenza in Japan—marked an important point in the company’s modern lineup and was associated with Mazda’s “Zoom-Zoom” brand message. Mazda’s timeline records international and regional recognition for the model, but the award categories and years differ; the case for inclusion rests on its lineup importance and sustained recognition, not on a single universal award ranking. Why these cars stand out

Mazda’s own heritage collection highlights seven vehicles—the MX-5, Cosmo, Savanna, Capella, Cosmo Sport, Luce, and Mazda-Go—but it does not publish a ranked all-time top eleven. This list draws on documented company milestones while adding major competition and modern-lineup examples. Mazda’s timeline also places these individual cars within a company that had produced approximately 62.76 million vehicles worldwide by the end of 2023; that is a company-wide total, not a figure for any one model. Mazda Great Cars of Mazda · Mazda Integrated Report 2024

Other plausible choices include the Luce, Eunos Cosmo, and RX-8. They are not ranked here because the milestones available for this selection do not establish a consistent basis for comparing them with the eleven entries above. The result is a defensible history-led shortlist, not a claim that every Mazda fan or market would choose the same order.
