For a US household choosing only by advertised entry price, Netflix is currently cheaper: Netflix Standard with ads is $8.99 per month, while Max Basic with Ads is $9.99. That $1 difference is rarely the deciding factor. Max may be the better fit if your household wants selected live sports or a lower-priced 4K tier; Netflix may fit better if its specific shows, films, games, or sharing options match your household. Compare the titles and events you actually watch, then check ads, simultaneous streams, downloads, picture quality, account rules, and billing route.
The prices and plan details below are US figures shown on the official Max and Netflix plan pages checked October 13, 2026. Prices, catalogs, sports rights, bundles, and third-party billing terms can change.
Max and Netflix plans compared
The most useful comparison is not simply “which service costs less?” Each provider places different features at different prices. Max offers annual billing on all three listed US plans; Netflix’s cited pricing page lists monthly prices.
| Service and plan | Price shown | Streams at once | Picture and audio | Downloads and other details |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Max Basic with Ads | $9.99/month or $99.99/year | 2 devices | Full HD 1080p | Ads before and during shows and movies; no download allowance shown |
| Max Standard | $16.99/month or $169.99/year | 2 devices | Full HD 1080p | Up to 30 downloads; selected live sports included |
| Max Premium | $20.99/month or $209.99/year | 4 devices | 4K Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos where available | Up to 100 downloads; selected live sports included |
| Netflix Standard with ads | $8.99/month | 2 devices | 1080p Full HD | Downloads on 2 supported devices at a time; some titles unavailable on the ad plan |
| Netflix Standard | $19.99/month | 2 devices | 1080p Full HD | Downloads on 2 supported devices; option to add 1 extra member where eligible |
| Netflix Premium | $26.99/month | 4 devices | 4K Ultra HD, HDR, and spatial audio | Downloads on 6 supported devices; up to 2 extra members where eligible |
Max says 4K and Dolby Atmos depend on availability. Netflix similarly requires compatible titles and equipment for its highest-quality playback. Neither service’s plan page makes every title available in the advertised format.

Which is cheaper, Max or Netflix?
Entry-level pricing
Netflix Standard with ads costs $8.99 monthly, $1 less than Max Basic with Ads at $9.99. Both permit two simultaneous devices and advertise 1080p Full HD. Price alone therefore gives Netflix the lower advertised starting point, not a universal value winner.
Comparable middle tiers
Max Standard is $16.99 per month, $3 less than Netflix Standard at $19.99. Max Standard includes selected live sports, while Netflix Standard is an ad-free Netflix plan with the stated option to add one extra member where eligible. The services’ catalogs are not interchangeable, so this is a feature-and-price comparison rather than proof that one has more content.
Premium tiers
Max Premium costs $20.99 monthly, $6 less than Netflix Premium at $26.99. Max’s premium plan includes four simultaneous devices, 4K Ultra HD, Dolby Atmos where available, up to 100 downloads, and selected live sports. Netflix Premium also supports four devices and 4K, adding HDR, spatial audio, downloads on six supported devices, and the option for up to two extra members where eligible.

Annual Max billing
Annual billing reduces Max’s effective cost if you expect to keep it for a full year. Max lists $99.99 annually for Basic with Ads, $169.99 for Standard, and $209.99 for Premium. At the listed monthly rates, twelve months would total $119.88, $203.88, and $251.88 respectively, so the annual-price differences are $19.89, $33.89, and $41.89 before tax. Annual billing commits you for the period; confirm the current cancellation and renewal terms before paying.
Start with the household’s actual watchlist
Make a short list of the shows, films, franchises, games, and sports events each person expects to watch. Search both services before subscribing. Catalog rights vary by country and change over time, and the plan pages do not establish that either service has a universally larger library or that a particular title is currently included.
A practical watchlist test
- Ask each household member for their three most-wanted titles or events.
- Check the current Max and Netflix apps or websites for availability in your US account.
- Mark titles that require a particular tier, contain ads, or are unavailable on an ad-supported plan.
- Count how many items each service provides during the month you expect to watch them.
- Subscribe to the service that satisfies the most important items at a price and plan level your household accepts.
Do not infer current availability from an old article, trailer, or social-media post. A title can leave a service even while the service remains popular.

Which service has live sports?
Max states that “Live Sports is included with the Standard and Premium plans.” Its US plan information lists selected MLB, NHL, NBA, NCAA Men’s March Madness, U.S. Soccer, and premier cycling events. “Selected” is important: the list does not promise every game, team, match, season, or league broadcast.
How to verify a sports need
- Identify the exact team, competition, date, or event you need.
- Check Max’s current sports schedule and rights information for that event.
- Confirm whether blackout, regional, or other viewing restrictions apply.
- Remember that live events may contain advertising even on a plan otherwise described as ad-free.
Netflix’s cited plan page emphasizes its own television, film, and games catalog rather than a comparable live-sports package. If sports are occasional, compare the cost of a separate event or league subscription instead of upgrading a streaming plan you will not otherwise use.
How much do ads change the choice?
Max Basic with Ads places ads before and during shows and movies. Max also notes that live events carry ads regardless of tier. Netflix Standard with ads costs less than Max’s ad tier, but Netflix says some titles are unavailable on its ad-supported plan. An ad plan can therefore affect both the viewing experience and the selection of programs.
Choose an ad tier when
- The household accepts commercial breaks for the lower monthly price.
- The titles everyone cares about are available on the ad plan.
- Two simultaneous streams are enough.
- No one needs offline downloads beyond the plan’s stated allowance.
Pay for ad-free on-demand viewing when
- Commercial interruptions are unacceptable for regular viewing.
- A frequently watched title is unavailable on Netflix’s ad plan.
- You need Max Standard or Premium for sports, rather than for ad removal alone.
“Ad-free” does not mean that every form of programming is commercial-free: Max’s live-event guidance specifically preserves advertising during live sports.
How many devices can stream at once?
Both services list two simultaneous devices on their lower and middle plans and four on their premium plans. A four-stream plan can be necessary for a busy household even when nobody cares about 4K.

Four people in a home do not automatically require four streams if they watch at different times. Conversely, two adults, children, and a guest can exceed a two-stream limit during a busy evening. - Breathtaking picture quality: Stunningly sharp 4K picture brings out rich detail in your entertainment with four times the resolution of HD. Watch as colors pop off your screen and enjoy lifelike clarity with Dolby Vision and HDR10+.
- Seamless streaming for any room: With Roku Streaming Stick 4K, watch your favorite entertainment on any TV in the house, even in rooms farther from your router thanks to the long-range Wi-Fi receiver.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
Simultaneous-stream limits are not permission to share with people in other homes. Account access rules and extra-member provisions are separate questions.
Do you need a premium plan for 4K?
Yes, based on the listed plans: Max reserves 4K Ultra HD for Premium, and Netflix lists 4K Ultra HD with HDR on Premium. Max Premium also lists Dolby Atmos where available; Netflix Premium lists spatial audio. Neither guarantee applies if the title, television, receiver, network, or playback device does not support the format.
Check these requirements before upgrading
- A 4K-capable television or monitor.
- A compatible app, streaming device, cable, and audio equipment.
- A title encoded in the desired 4K, HDR, Atmos, or spatial-audio format.
- A reliable internet connection capable of maintaining high-quality playback.
If everyone watches on 1080p screens, a premium tier may still be worthwhile for four streams or expanded downloads, but 4K itself will not improve a non-4K display.
Downloads for travel and unreliable internet
Max Basic with Ads shows no download allowance in the cited plan table. Max Standard permits up to 30 downloads, and Max Premium up to 100. Netflix lists downloads on two supported devices at a time for Standard with ads and Standard, and on six supported devices for Premium.
Download counts do not mean every program can be saved indefinitely. Licensing, device support, expiration, and ad-plan restrictions can affect an individual title. Test a representative title before a trip, while you still have internet access, and leave enough storage on each device.
Can your family share one account?
Netflix’s Help Center defines a household as devices connected to the internet at the main residence where Netflix is watched and states: “You cannot share your Netflix account outside of your household, which is a collection of devices connected to the internet at the main residence where you watch Netflix.” Eligible Standard and Premium customers can add extra members in many countries, but eligibility depends on the account and billing arrangement.

Max’s plan information says an Extra Member Add-On is available to WarnerMedia-billed subscribers. A subscription billed through a different provider or bundle may have different controls. Check the account’s billing route before assuming that an extra member or multi-home arrangement is available.
Recommended Free Tools
Separate these three questions
- Access: who the provider permits to use the account or an extra-member slot.
- Concurrent streams: how many supported devices can play at one time.
- Downloads: how many devices can hold offline content under the plan.
A four-stream tier does not itself authorize sharing with relatives who live elsewhere. A household with people in multiple homes should review the provider’s current terms and price the permitted extra-member options.
Is the Disney+, Hulu, and Max bundle worth it?
Max’s US help information documents a Disney+, Hulu, and Max bundle at $16.99 per month with ads or $29.99 without ads. The ad bundle includes Max Basic with Ads, Disney+ Basic, and Hulu with ads. The no-ads bundle includes Max Standard, Disney+ Premium, and Hulu without ads. Max Premium is not offered in this bundle, and Netflix is not included.
Use the bundle only if you will use all three services
Compare the bundle with the individual prices you would otherwise pay and with the number of months each app would remain active. The bundle can simplify billing and lower the combined cost for a household that genuinely watches Disney+, Hulu, and Max. It is poor value if one service is rarely opened, if you require Max Premium’s 4K tier, or if Netflix is the service everyone actually wants.

Household decision scenarios
The lowest-cost occasional viewer
Choose between Netflix Standard with ads at $8.99 and Max Basic with Ads at $9.99 after checking the watchlist. Netflix has the lower entry price, while Max may win if its included titles or selected sports matter more.
The sports-focused household
Start with Max Standard or Premium because Max explicitly includes selected live sports on those plans. Verify the exact events; do not treat the listed leagues as complete coverage. Choose Premium only if four streams, 4K, higher download capacity, or Dolby Atmos also justify its price.
The 4K home theater
Compare Max Premium at $20.99 with Netflix Premium at $26.99. Check which service has the household’s priority titles in 4K and whether the television and audio equipment support the format. Netflix Premium adds HDR and spatial audio; Max Premium lists Dolby Atmos where available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe multi-viewer home without 4K equipment
Choose a four-stream premium plan only if simultaneous viewing is the problem. If two streams suffice, a lower tier may meet the need even on a large household television that cannot display 4K.
The family living in multiple homes
Review household and extra-member rules before subscribing. Do not select a four-stream plan simply to bypass residence restrictions. Netflix’s household definition and Max’s billing-route limitation make the account arrangement as important as the stream count.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Choosing from price alone: check the household watchlist and sports schedule first.
- Assuming “live sports” means every game: Max describes selected events, so verify the exact broadcast.
- Confusing ad-free with no live-event ads: Max says live events carry ads on every tier.
- Paying for 4K on incompatible equipment: confirm display, title, app, network, and audio support.
- Treating streams as sharing permission: household eligibility and simultaneous devices are different rules.
- Buying an annual plan without checking commitment: compare the annual discount with how long you expect to keep Max.
- Assuming a bundle includes every premium feature: the Disney+, Hulu, and Max bundle does not offer Max Premium.
- Relying on an old catalog list: verify availability immediately before subscribing.
What Netflix’s account-sharing history does—and does not—tell you
Netflix said in 2023 that more than 100 million households were sharing accounts. That is a historical Netflix corporate statement, not a current independent estimate and not evidence that Netflix or Max is better value today. Current household eligibility should be determined from the provider’s present account guidance, not from that statistic.
Bottom line: choose by the use case
Pick Netflix when its specific catalog is your priority, the $8.99 ad tier meets your needs, or Netflix Premium’s HDR, spatial audio, and six-device download allowance matter. Pick Max when selected live sports, a lower-priced 4K premium tier, Dolby Atmos where available, or its annual pricing better matches your household. Choose the Disney+, Hulu, and Max bundle only when all three included services earn a regular place in your viewing schedule. Recheck prices, catalog availability, sports rights, household language, and bundle terms before payment because each can change.
