Max Battles and Raid Battles are different Pokémon GO formats. Max Battles take place at Power Spots, consume Max Particles only after a win, and require a three-Pokémon party containing at least one Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon. Raids use their own schedule, bosses, and event rules. Max Battles add a meter, three-turn Dynamax or Gigantamax phases, battlefield energy, cheering, and support moves; their listed rewards include Rare Candy, XP, Premier Balls, a boss encounter, and the option to station a Pokémon. There is no current official, general reward table that supports a numeric raid-versus-Max comparison, so event bonuses must not be presented as standard rewards.
What is the difference between a Max Battle and a raid?
A Max Battle is a Power Spot encounter built around Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon. You spend Max Particles to enter, fight with a restricted party, charge a battle meter, and transform a Pokémon for a short burst of powered-up moves. A Raid Battle is a separately scheduled encounter whose boss, tier, access rules, and bonuses depend on the active raid rotation or event.
The formats can appear in the same Pokémon GO event listing, but they are not interchangeable labels. The official event page separates categories such as three-star raids, five-star raids, and Max Battles, with different Pokémon shown in each category. That distinction affects where you go, which Pokémon can fight, how your group supports one another, and what rewards are available.

| Comparison point | Max Battles | Raids |
|---|---|---|
| Entry location | Select Power Spots | Raid locations shown on the active raid schedule |
| Entry resource | Max Particles; the amount depends on the Power Spot Boss, and particles are spent only after victory | Raid access and passes follow the active raid rules; the reviewed official sources do not establish a universal numeric pass-and-reward table |
| Party eligibility | Three Pokémon; at least one must be Dynamax or Gigantamax, and only those forms may participate | Boss and tier are set by the active raid rotation; a current general rules page was not established in the official sources reviewed |
| Group size | Dynamax battles: up to four Trainers. Gigantamax battles: up to 40 Trainers, arranged in groups of four or fewer | Group limits and lobby details vary by the active raid rules and are not specified in the sources used for this comparison |
| Battle loop | Fast and Charged Attacks fill a Max meter; a full meter gives three turns of Dynamax or Gigantamax. Dodge, collect battlefield energy, and cheer when your party has fainted | The sources reviewed do not provide a complete general explanation of raid lobby and battle mechanics |
| Named victory rewards | Rare Candy, XP, Premier Balls, and a chance to catch the Power Spot Boss | A standard numeric reward set was not stated in the official sources reviewed |
| After the win | Place one battle-party Pokémon at the Power Spot; it can later return with Candy and provide a damage bonus to challengers | No equivalent post-battle placement feature is established in the reviewed sources |
This table is deliberately conservative. It records rules that the cited official material establishes rather than filling gaps with figures from a particular event. A free-pass allowance or a special catch background announced for one event is an event bonus, not a permanent raid reward rule.

How Max Battles work
Find the right Power Spot
Max Battles are held at selected Power Spots, not at every ordinary raid location. Open the map and select a Power Spot to see its current boss, the Max Particle cost, and whether the encounter is available. The cost is boss-dependent, so check the entry screen rather than assuming every battle uses the same amount.
Max Particles are consumed only after you win. That means a failed attempt does not spend the particles required for entry, although you still need enough particles to start the battle. The entry requirement is separate from any later Candy or Max Particle cost for upgrading Max Moves.
Build the three-Pokémon party
Before entering, choose exactly three Pokémon and include at least one Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon. The Pokémon GO team states: “Only Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon can be used in Max Battles.” In practice, a normal non-Max Pokémon cannot fill a slot simply because it has high Combat Power; the battle eligibility rule comes first.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Use the active boss’s typing and moves as the starting point for selection.
- Bring a mix that can keep dealing damage while one Pokémon is waiting for its transformation window.
- Reserve a slot for a Max-eligible Pokémon that can perform the role your group lacks, such as damage, healing, or damage reduction.
- Do not invest Stardust or Candy in a “universal” lineup. Boss rotations change, and the official material does not identify one team as best for every Max Battle.
Charge the Max meter
Tap Fast Attacks and use Charged Attacks in the usual battle pattern. Those attacks also fill the Max meter. When the meter is full, your active Pokémon enters Dynamax or Gigantamax for three turns. Treat this as a timed resource: entering the powered-up phase at the right moment is more useful than triggering it immediately without considering the boss’s attacks or your team’s condition.
During the fight, swipe to dodge when the boss targets your Pokémon. Swipe toward energy icons that appear on the battlefield to collect them and charge the meter faster. These actions make Max Battles more than a simple damage race; movement and meter management can determine how often your team reaches its three-turn transformation.
Use the support options
Max Moves give the party jobs beyond direct damage. The attack move’s type is based on the Pokémon’s Fast Attack. Max Spirit heals the user and allies, while Max Guard reduces damage from the Power Spot Boss. The right move depends on the boss, the number of players, and whether your group is losing Pokémon faster than it can deal damage.

If all of your Pokémon faint, you are not removed from the encounter. Cheer for the active teammates. Cheering accelerates their Max meters, allowing surviving players to reach their powered-up phases sooner. It is a support action, not a substitute for bringing an eligible party, so use it after a faint rather than treating fainting as a preferred strategy.
Max Battle group sizes and coordination
Dynamax encounters
The official overview allows up to four Trainers to work together in a Dynamax Max Battle. Because each Trainer brings three Pokémon but only one is active at a time, coordinate roles rather than choosing three identical attackers. One player may emphasize damage while another prepares Max Spirit or Max Guard for a difficult phase.
Gigantamax encounters
Gigantamax battles can bring up to 40 Trainers together, arranged in groups of four or fewer. The large headline number does not mean that 40 players share one unrestricted party. You still enter through the group structure and follow the same three-Pokémon eligibility rule. Larger attendance can make support timing and survival more important, because a fainted player can contribute by cheering for the active groups.
What you receive after defeating a Max Battle boss
Direct rewards and the catch encounter
The official Max Battle overview lists Rare Candy, XP, and Premier Balls for defeating a Power Spot Boss. Victory also gives you a chance to encounter and catch that boss. Premier Balls are the capture resource named for this reward flow; the number available can depend on the game’s encounter calculation and is not a universal figure established by the sources used here.
PokéCoins can be used to upgrade rewards, but that is an optional enhancement. Spending PokéCoins is not presented as a requirement to enter or complete a Max Battle.

Station a Pokémon at the Power Spot
After a win, you can place one Pokémon from your battle party at the Power Spot. When it returns, it can bring Candy. A stationed Pokémon also supplies a damage bonus to later challengers at that location. The official overview says that placing more Pokémon may increase the chance of a nearby wild encounter, so the placement system can benefit both the owner and subsequent players.

Choose the stationed Pokémon with the location’s active rotation in mind. The purpose is not only to leave behind the Pokémon with the highest Combat Power; a useful Max-eligible species can help future challengers through the location’s damage bonus.
What raids contribute to the comparison
Raids remain a separate, scheduled activity. Their boss species and tier are selected by the current rotation, and event pages can list three-star and five-star raids alongside Max Battles. That separation is the reliable comparison point: a raid lineup does not automatically become a Max Battle lineup, and a Max Battle’s Power Spot cost and eligibility rule do not describe ordinary raid entry.
The official pages reviewed for this article do not provide a complete, current general raid-reward table. Consequently, it would be misleading to state that a raid always gives a particular number of Rare Candy, Premier Balls, XP, or other items compared with a Max Battle. Reward quantities can be affected by tier and by temporary event rules, so check the specific raid announcement for the encounter you are planning.
How to read event bonuses without confusing them with standard rewards
Event pages often put raid and Max Battle information next to one another. Read the date, local-time window, ticket requirement, and category attached to every bonus.
GO Wild Area: Global example
The official GO Wild Area: Global page accessed on October 13, 2026, announces gameplay for November 14 and 15, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. local time. It lists Dynamax Dialga and Gigantamax Duraludon in Max Battles. The raid list includes Machamp, Zekrom, White Kyurem, Reshiram, and Black Kyurem.
For that announced event, Trainers participating in raids and Max Battles may have a chance to receive a Special Background after a successful catch. The same page announces up to three free Raid Passes per day for all Trainers and up to six daily for ticket holders. Those pass allowances and the Special Background chance belong to the November 14–15 event; they are not a general statement about every raid or every Max Battle. Because the page describes a future event at the October 13 access date, verify the schedule and bonuses immediately before playing.

Team-building strategy that works across rotations
Start with the boss, not a favorite Pokémon
Check the Power Spot Boss or raid boss shown in the current schedule before spending resources. For Max Battles, identify the boss’s type and then check which of your eligible Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon can exploit that matchup while surviving the boss’s attacks. A species that is excellent against one rotation can be a poor investment when the boss changes.
Assign a job to each Max slot
- Damage slot: Choose a Max-eligible Pokémon whose Fast Attack gives the Max attack type you need against the boss.
- Sustain slot: Prepare Max Spirit when healing yourself and allies will keep more players active than another marginal damage increase.
- Protection slot: Use Max Guard when reducing incoming damage is the difference between reaching another meter cycle and fainting.
These are roles, not a permanent ranking. The official material establishes what the moves do but does not name a universally optimal trio or a current counter list.
Coordinate the three-turn transformation
- Build the meter with Fast and Charged Attacks while watching the boss’s targeting.
- Dodge incoming attacks and collect battlefield energy icons to accelerate the next transformation.
- Trigger Dynamax or Gigantamax when the boss is vulnerable, when a support move is needed, or when your group can synchronize its damage.
- Use the three turns deliberately: damage for a short window, Max Spirit to stabilize the party, or Max Guard to reduce the next incoming pressure.
- If your entire party faints, stop attacking and cheer so active teammates fill their meters faster.
Prepare for a small group
With fewer Trainers, survival and role coverage matter more than a collection of fragile attackers. Bring at least one Pokémon that can contribute meaningful damage while retaining access to the support move your group needs. If another player already covers healing, you can lean toward damage or protection; confirm that plan before the battle starts.
Prepare for a large Gigantamax group
In a Gigantamax encounter with many groups of up to four, do not assume every player has the same move set or boss counter. Keep your own three Pokémon eligible, collect energy efficiently, and use cheering if you faint. A large attendance increases the number of active teammates but does not remove the need to manage your own meter and survival.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step-by-step preparation checklist
- Check the schedule. Confirm whether the target is a Power Spot Max Battle or a raid, and note the boss, tier, date, and local start and end times.
- Confirm entry resources. For a Max Battle, inspect the Power Spot’s Max Particle cost. For a raid, read the event’s pass and ticket terms instead of applying a Max Particle rule.
- Filter for eligibility. Build a three-Pokémon Max party with at least one Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon. Ordinary Pokémon cannot participate in that format.
- Review move roles. Decide whether your group needs damage, Max Spirit healing, or Max Guard damage reduction.
- Coordinate players. Dynamax encounters support up to four Trainers; Gigantamax encounters can support up to 40 Trainers in groups of four or fewer.
- During combat, manage the meter. Attack, dodge, collect energy icons, and reserve the three-turn transformation for a useful window.
- Recover from a faint. If all three Pokémon faint, cheer for active teammates to accelerate their meters.
- After victory, collect and place. Take the listed rewards and catch opportunity, then decide whether to station one battle-party Pokémon at the Power Spot.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Entering with a normal raid team
A high-powered raid attacker that lacks Dynamax or Gigantamax status cannot be used in a Max Battle. Check the form requirement before you travel to the Power Spot.
Assuming every Power Spot costs the same
Max Particle costs depend on the Power Spot Boss. Read the entry screen for the current encounter, and remember that particles are spent only after victory.

Treating a three-turn phase as a permanent transformation
Dynamax or Gigantamax lasts for three turns in the Max Battle loop. Charge the meter, choose the timing, and plan what those turns accomplish instead of expecting the form to remain for the whole encounter.
Ignoring movement and energy
Standing still and tapping attacks leaves meter charge on the table. Swipe to dodge targeted attacks and swipe toward battlefield energy icons when they appear.
Quitting after the party faints
Fainting all three Pokémon changes your job from attacking to cheering. Use the support action to accelerate teammates’ Max meters.
Using an event bonus as a permanent reward claim
Free Raid Pass allowances, ticket benefits, special catches, and Special Background chances are tied to named events and dates. Keep the event name and time window attached to the statement, and recheck the official announcement before relying on it.
Which format should you choose?
Choose a Max Battle when you want a Power Spot challenge
Max Battles are the better fit when you have eligible Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon, want to practice meter timing and support moves, or want the post-win option to station a Pokémon for Candy and a location damage bonus. They also offer a distinctive group-support loop through dodging, energy collection, and cheering.
Choose a raid when the scheduled boss is your priority
Raids are the relevant choice when the active raid rotation contains the Pokémon you want or when an event assigns a particular bonus to a raid tier. Read the current schedule for the boss and pass rules; do not infer those details from Max Battle mechanics.
Use both during a mixed event
A single event can feature both formats with different Pokémon. Plan them separately: reserve Max-eligible Pokémon and Max Particles for the Power Spot encounter, then follow the raid’s own schedule and event conditions. A successful catch in either category may qualify for an event bonus only when the announcement explicitly says so.

The confirmed Max Battle list is specific: Rare Candy, XP, Premier Balls, a chance to catch the boss, and the stationing system. A current official source establishing a standard numeric reward comparison with ordinary raids was not identified. That means no responsible guide can claim, as a permanent rule, that one format gives more of a particular item or a fixed number of items than the other.
For an exact session, use the in-game reward screen and the official announcement for the active boss or event. Treat any number as conditional on the format, tier, date, ticket status, and other terms shown there.
