To accept cryptocurrency in an online store, choose an integration that matches your commerce platform, business location, supported coins and networks, and preferred settlement currency. Start with the platform’s payment-method directory and the provider’s current setup documentation; then verify eligibility, fees, refunds, and order handling before enabling checkout.
Choose the right kind of integration
Most stores can add crypto checkout through one of three routes. The simplest route depends on your platform and what you want to receive: cryptocurrency, local currency, or another fiat currency.
Platform-native stablecoin checkout
Shopify Payments offers a USDC payment option to eligible merchants. Shopify’s current help page explains which merchants can use it, supported networks, payout choices, and transaction restrictions. Its June 12, 2025 announcement described USDC on Base in early access; use the current help page rather than that announcement to determine whether your store is eligible now. The announcement said customers could pay using supported crypto wallets, guest checkout, or Shop Pay. Shopify’s USDC payment documentation and its announcement provide the relevant details.

Shopify lists additional crypto payment methods, including Solana Pay, Crypto.com, BitPay, DePay, OpenNode, Strike, Lunu, Bit2Me Commerce, and IBEX Pay. Their accepted assets and settlement arrangements differ, and availability is not uniform. In Shopify admin, go to Settings > Payments > Add payment methods and search for the assets you intend to accept. Check the provider’s own documentation and onboarding requirements before activating a method. Shopify’s cryptocurrency guidance explains the platform’s current approach.

A plugin, hosted checkout, or API
BitPay documents plugins or extensions for WordPress/WooCommerce, Shopify, Magento 1 and 2, OpenCart, PrestaShop, and other platforms. It also offers hosted checkout and server-side API libraries. Its documentation says merchants can receive settlement in currencies including USD, EUR, and GBP. Confirm that the relevant plugin is still available for your platform and that your business is eligible before building around it. See BitPay’s integration guidance.
Check compatibility before you commit
A provider’s name alone does not establish that it will work for your store. Compare the practical details below for your specific platform, country, and checkout flow.

- Platform: Confirm that the current plugin or payment-method listing supports your platform and its version. For a custom build, check the provider’s current API documentation and authentication method.
- Merchant location: Verify that crypto payments and provider onboarding are available for your business jurisdiction. Shopify says merchants should verify that cryptocurrencies are acceptable as payment in their region.
- Assets and networks: Check the exact coin and blockchain network customers must use. A currency name such as USDC is not enough to establish network compatibility.
- Settlement and custody: Decide whether the provider pays out in fiat, cryptocurrency, or a choice of both, and understand who controls any wallet holding funds.
- Transaction handling: Review settlement timing, fees, refunds, partial captures, subscriptions, disputed payments, and how the integration handles order changes.
- Maintenance: Check whether the plugin or API is actively supported and whether upgrades or migrations are required.
Understand Shopify USDC checkout rules
Shopify’s USDC option has specific requirements that differ from using a third-party crypto gateway. Customers need USDC on a supported network. Eligible merchants can receive payouts in their local currency by default; in some regions, a merchant can choose to claim USDC to a crypto wallet. Shopify’s documentation describes the current eligibility and payout details: USDC payments with Shopify Payments.
The documented Shopify USDC flow does not support partial captures, subscription purchases, or disputes. Refund funding also depends on the payout choice: if the merchant receives USDC in a wallet, the merchant needs enough USDC available to refund an order; if USDC is paid out in the merchant’s selected Shopify Payments currency, the refund is funded from the Shopify Payments balance and converted to USDC.

Plan for settlement delays and refunds
Shopify warns that longer settlement times for cryptocurrency transactions can cause overselling during flash sales. If inventory is scarce, account for the gap between order placement and confirmed settlement in your inventory and fulfillment workflow. Shopify also says third-party gateway fees may apply, so check the terms for both the payment provider and your platform.
Shopify’s general guidance for cryptocurrency payments says refunds are not automatic and must be issued manually through the payment gateway. Treat that as general guidance for third-party crypto gateways; the USDC flow has the separate refund-balance rules described above. See Shopify’s cryptocurrency guidance.

Handle legacy Coinbase Commerce integrations
Coinbase Commerce portal access ended after March 31, 2026, so that transition deadline has passed. Coinbase’s current transition guidance says Coinbase Business is available to businesses with a legal entity in the United States or Singapore; other merchants were directed to an alternative provider unless their region becomes eligible.
Recommended Free Tools
If an existing store uses the Commerce API, do not assume its old implementation remains suitable. Eligible merchants moving to Coinbase Business need to update authentication and use Coinbase Business Payment Link API endpoints and schema. Coinbase also said Commerce funds and transaction history needed to be exported or withdrawn before the deadline. For an account-specific status or next step, use Coinbase’s transition guidance.

A practical rollout sequence
- Write down your requirements. Identify your store platform, merchant jurisdiction, assets and networks to accept, and whether you want fiat or crypto settlement.
- Check the platform directory. Search the platform’s current payment-method list, such as Shopify admin’s Settings > Payments > Add payment methods. For other platforms, check the provider’s current plugin or extension documentation.
- Verify eligibility and terms. Confirm regional availability, onboarding requirements, supported assets and networks, settlement timing, and all applicable fees with the provider.
- Map order and refund behavior. Confirm when an order is considered paid, what happens if settlement is delayed, and how refunds, partial captures, subscriptions, and order changes are handled.
- Implement and validate the checkout. Follow the provider’s current plugin, hosted-checkout, or API instructions. Test the customer payment journey and the corresponding order, settlement, and refund workflow before promoting the option.
- Review integrations over time. Recheck platform listings and provider notices when updating your store, especially if you depend on an API or a legacy implementation.
When a custom API makes sense
A custom integration can provide control over the checkout and order flow, but it also makes your team responsible for maintaining API compatibility, authentication, settlement handling, and recovery paths. Prefer a supported plugin or hosted checkout when it meets the store’s requirements and reduces ongoing maintenance. If you build against an API, use the provider’s current documentation rather than an old tutorial, and define how the store behaves when payment confirmation is delayed or an API integration changes.
