Mastercard is connecting stablecoins to familiar cards, bank accounts and payment settlement rather than treating them as wallet-only assets. Its current work has three layers: cards that convert a user’s stablecoin balance to fiat at checkout, Mastercard Move transfers between stablecoin and fiat accounts, and regulated-stablecoin settlement for issuers and acquirers. In 2026, Mastercard and BVNK added a Global Money Platform that combines fiat and stablecoins in one business account.
What Mastercard is building
The initiatives are related, but they serve different users and points in the payment chain.

How spending stablecoins with a Mastercard card works
In a 2025 announcement, Mastercard and MoonPay described cards linked to users’ stablecoin balances. A cardholder pays through the Mastercard network; the linked provider debits the stablecoin balance and converts the required amount to fiat for the merchant. The announcement says the cards can be used at more than 150 million Mastercard locations worldwide.

The transaction sequence
- Fund the linked balance. Stablecoins are held with the wallet, fintech or other issuing partner behind the card.
- Present the card. The merchant processes the purchase like another Mastercard card transaction.
- Convert and authorize. The provider converts enough stablecoin to the transaction’s fiat currency and seeks authorization through the card network.
- Pay the merchant. The merchant receives fiat through its normal acquiring arrangement; it does not need to accept a blockchain token directly.
This model preserves card-level fraud controls, purchase protections and chargeback rights cited in Mastercard’s materials. Those protections apply to the card transaction; a separate wallet transfer sent to the wrong address generally does not have the same recovery mechanism.

Moving stablecoins to a bank account with Mastercard Move
Mastercard Move is the bank-connectivity layer. Mastercard’s 2026 product description says the service can reach 17 billion endpoints and more than 150 currencies. In practical terms, a supported provider can arrange a send or receive flow between a stablecoin balance and a fiat account, subject to the corridor, licensed partners, compliance checks and local rules.
What a transfer can look like
- Choose a supported route. The wallet or payment provider identifies the destination country, currency and bank rail.
- Provide recipient details. The sender supplies the bank-account information required for that corridor and completes any identity or compliance checks.
- Set the amount and conversion. The provider quotes or calculates the stablecoin-to-fiat conversion and any applicable fees under its own terms.
- Submit the transfer. Mastercard Move coordinates the stablecoin and fiat legs through participating institutions.
- Confirm receipt. Timing depends on the corridor and partner; the 17-billion-endpoint figure is a stated network reach, not a guarantee that every endpoint is available to every customer.
Mastercard has not published one universal consumer sign-up process or identical pricing for all countries. A reader must check which provider, currency corridor and bank-account type are supported in their location.

What the BVNK Global Money Platform adds for businesses
Mastercard and BVNK introduced the Global Money Platform in 2026 as a multi-currency account in which fiat and stablecoins can sit together. Through one API, a business can hold balances, convert between forms of money, receive funds, pay suppliers and send local-currency payouts to recipients’ bank accounts. The platform also supports spending through Mastercard cards, with card issuance available in more than 130 countries according to the announcement.
Typical business uses
- Receivables: accept supported fiat or stablecoin payments into the same operating account.
- Treasury: convert balances when liquidity or currency exposure requires it instead of maintaining separate operational systems.
- Supplier and contractor payouts: fund a stablecoin balance while delivering local currency to a recipient’s bank account where the corridor is available.
- Employee or expense cards: issue Mastercard cards connected to the account for ordinary purchases.
BVNK supplies on-chain infrastructure for holding, moving, managing and converting digital and fiat currencies; Mastercard supplies payment acceptance and related payout and card rails. Availability still depends on licensing, onboarding, supported currencies and the business’s jurisdiction.

Regulated-stablecoin settlement for issuers and acquirers
Mastercard’s 2026 settlement announcement adds regulated stablecoins as an option alongside fiat settlement. It highlights intraday, weekend and holiday settlement, which can reduce dependence on conventional banking-day cycles for participating institutions. This is a back-end choice for issuers, acquirers and payment companies, not a promise that every cardholder can settle a personal account in stablecoins.

The announcement does not establish that every listed asset is available on every listed network or in every market; support is determined by the participating program.

Scale, tokenization and consumer safeguards
Mastercard’s 2025 materials cite more than 150 million merchant locations and more than 3.5 billion cards in circulation. Its 2025 Form 10-K reports approximately 130 crypto co-brand card programs and says about 40% of Mastercard transactions were tokenized. Tokenization replaces sensitive card details with a digital token during processing; it is a network security measure and does not mean the transaction itself was paid in a stablecoin.
The practical advantage of a card route is that existing card controls remain in the flow: Mastercard describes fraud safeguards, purchase protections and chargeback rights. A direct blockchain transfer has different risks, including irreversible errors, network fees, address mistakes and dependence on the wallet provider’s recovery and compliance procedures.

What is not universal yet
These announcements describe staged rollouts, selected markets and partner-led programs. They do not establish a single Mastercard stablecoin card available worldwide, a universal consumer account, one global fee schedule or identical asset and blockchain support in every country. Before applying or integrating, verify the issuing or banking partner, your country, supported stablecoins and networks, identity requirements, conversion rates, transfer limits, settlement timing and the legal treatment of the funds.
Mastercard’s stated rationale is to combine stablecoins’ programmable, cross-border and potentially always-on characteristics with the acceptance, security and protections of established payment rails. As executive vice president Raj Dhamodharan put it, “The next phase of stablecoin adoption is about real-world utility, especially in settlement, where timing and liquidity matter most.” The result is less a single new product than a set of connections between wallets, accounts, cards and institutional settlement.
