Marvel’s Wolverine and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 offer fundamentally different superhero fantasies on PS5. Wolverine is a single-player, narrative-driven action-adventure centered on Logan and explicitly not set in an open world. PlayStation describes Marvel’s Wolverine as a single-player, narrative-driven action-adventure and states that it is not set in an open world. Its PS5 launch was announced by Sony Interactive Entertainment on September 15, 2026. Spider-Man 2 launched on PS5 on October 20, 2023, and its official page presents it as a single-player game set across a larger version of Marvel’s New York.
Release dates, platform and player count
Wolverine is the newer PS5 release
Marvel’s Wolverine launched worldwide on September 15, 2026, exclusively for PlayStation 5. The current PlayStation product page confirms the released PS5 version rather than describing a future project. The game is designed as a solo experience: the campaign follows Logan, not a team of human players controlling different characters.

Spider-Man 2 arrived in 2023
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 launched on October 20, 2023, only on PS5. Its official FAQ says, “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is a single player game.” That means the presence of two heroes does not turn the campaign into online or local co-op. One person controls Peter or Miles at a time.
Both titles therefore require a PS5, but release age does not tell you which has the better campaign, combat or performance. The available official material does not establish a reliable game-to-game playtime, frame-rate or review-score comparison.
Story and protagonists: one mutant hero versus two Spider-Men
Wolverine is a Logan-centered story
Wolverine’s story is built around Logan’s return to the mutant task force Team X while a threat involving kidnapped mutants unfolds. The premise gives the game a single dramatic viewpoint: Logan is the central character, and the narrative is organized around his identity, abilities and relationships.

This is not presented as a crossover in which you regularly rotate through a large roster of Marvel heroes; the official premise keeps Logan at the center.
Spider-Man 2 follows Peter and Miles together
Spider-Man 2 divides its story between Peter Parker and Miles Morales. The central danger brings them into the same conflict with Kraven, the Lizard and Venom. The official gameplay description frames their relationship as part of the story as well as a reason to experience two different sets of abilities.
PlayStation’s FAQ states: “You can play as both Peter Parker and Miles Morales, switching between the heroic Spider-Men on your crime-fighting adventures to experience their individual gameplay abilities and story elements.” Switching is therefore a designed part of the campaign, not merely an optional skin change.

The practical distinction is narrative focus. Wolverine asks you to stay with one antihero’s journey, while Spider-Man 2 alternates between two protagonists whose personal arcs and powers both matter to the plot.
World structure: is Marvel’s Wolverine open world?
Wolverine is explicitly not open world
No. PlayStation’s official FAQ says, “Marvel’s Wolverine is a single-player, narrative-driven action-adventure game. It is not set in an open world.” That is the clearest structural difference between the two games.
“Not open world” does not by itself specify a mission count, level length or whether individual areas offer optional paths. It does mean you should not buy Wolverine expecting a seamless city map designed for free-roaming travel between activities. The confirmed design emphasis is a directed, story-led action-adventure in which Logan’s missions and encounters carry the experience.
Spider-Man 2 uses an expansive Marvel New York
Spider-Man 2 takes place across an expansive version of Marvel’s New York, with Queens and Brooklyn included alongside the city areas associated with the series. Its world structure supports movement across a connected urban environment and the kind of optional exploration that naturally follows from fast aerial travel.
The difference is not simply “small map versus large map.” Wolverine’s non-open-world structure concentrates attention on Logan’s narrative and combat. Spider-Man 2’s city makes distance, route choice and movement itself part of the fantasy. If your priority is roaming between neighborhoods as a superhero, Spider-Man 2 is the game whose official design description matches that expectation.

These are not merely cosmetic animations. They explain why an expansive New York works as Spider-Man’s play space: the heroes can move vertically, horizontally and across long distances without treating streets as the only route.
Wolverine’s movement is framed around action-adventure missions
The official Wolverine materials emphasize Logan, the story and combat rather than an open-city traversal system. They do not establish web-like aerial movement, a comparable city map or a specific free-roaming travel feature. Expect the game’s movement choices to serve its action-adventure spaces and encounters, not to reproduce Spider-Man 2’s high-speed urban traversal.
That makes the choice straightforward: web-swinging, gliding and rapid neighborhood travel point to Spider-Man 2; a Logan-focused adventure in which combat and story progression lead the structure points to Wolverine.

Wolverine’s combat identity
Wolverine’s official FAQ identifies techniques, adaptations, claws and a combat Rage ability as parts of Logan’s toolkit. Those elements fit a close-range, character-specific combat fantasy: you are playing a regenerative mutant whose signature weapons are built into his body, rather than a hero relying primarily on gadgets or ranged web attacks.
Because the official material does not provide a complete skill tree or numerical progression breakdown, it would be misleading to promise particular upgrade counts, damage values or a specific build system. The dependable takeaway is that Logan’s combat is organized around his established abilities and the Rage mechanic, with progression serving the narrative action-adventure rather than an open-world checklist.

- Peter Parker: symbiote abilities add a different set of attacks and options to his established Spider-Man toolkit.
- Miles Morales: bioelectric abilities provide his own power set and combat expression.
- Both heroes: gadgets, stealth and direct combat support different approaches to encounters.
The official gameplay description explicitly says players can approach encounters with stealth, combat or a mixture. That flexibility, combined with switching between Peter and Miles, creates more than a cosmetic difference between the protagonists: each character changes how an encounter can be approached.

What the combat comparison does—and does not—establish
Wolverine is the more focused choice if you want every fight to reinforce Logan’s claws, techniques and Rage ability. Spider-Man 2 is the better match for players who want to alternate between two power sets and combine stealth, gadgets and direct attacks. Neither official source establishes that one combat system is objectively superior, harder or deeper, so the useful comparison is the type of superhero you want to embody.
How switching works in Spider-Man 2
Spider-Man 2 remains single-player even though Peter and Miles are both playable. You do not need a second controller, and the official FAQ does not describe cooperative play. Instead, the campaign lets one player switch between the two heroes during crime-fighting adventures and story elements.
The switch matters for three reasons:
- Story perspective: each Spider-Man has individual story elements, so the campaign is not told exclusively from Peter’s or Miles’s viewpoint.
- Abilities: symbiote powers and bioelectric powers produce different combat options.
- Traversal fantasy: both heroes use the city’s movement systems, but changing characters lets you experience the two Spider-Men as distinct protagonists rather than as interchangeable costumes.
Wolverine offers no equivalent character rotation in the confirmed premise. Logan is the campaign’s central playable hero.
Which PS5 game should you buy?
Choose Marvel’s Wolverine if you want:
- A story centered on Logan rather than a dual-protagonist structure.
- A non-open-world, narrative-driven action-adventure.
- Claws, mutant techniques, adaptations and a combat Rage ability as the defining combat language.
- A plot involving Team X and kidnapped mutants.
- A Wolverine experience that stays focused on one hero instead of asking you to switch between Spider-Men.
Choose Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 if you want:
- An expansive Marvel New York that includes Queens and Brooklyn.
- Web-swinging, Web Wings and wind tunnels for fast movement.
- Two playable protagonists, Peter Parker and Miles Morales.
- Distinct symbiote and bioelectric abilities.
- The option to use stealth, gadgets, direct combat or a mixture.
- A story involving Kraven, the Lizard and Venom.

Both games are PS5 experiences
The launch materials for both titles describe PS5-specific presentation and DualSense features such as haptics and adaptive triggers. A standard DualSense wireless controller is an optional accessory, not a special requirement. You do not need a limited-edition controller to play either game.
Wolverine’s official page confirms PS5 availability. Spider-Man 2’s official page also references a collector’s edition containing a statue of both Spider-Men facing Venom, a game voucher and a SteelBook display case. That description identifies what the edition included; it does not establish current stock or a current price. Check the live PlayStation listing or a retailer in your region for edition availability before buying.

Do not use historical prices as current prices
Prelaunch Wolverine coverage included historical MSRP and edition information, but those figures are not a current retailer quote. Prices, physical-versus-digital formats, regional editions and inventory can change, so verify those details at the point of purchase rather than treating an older announcement as a live offer.
What the official information does not prove
A comparison should not turn the confirmed differences into unsupported performance claims. The available official materials do not provide a directly comparable playtime, frame-rate test, resolution analysis, difficulty ranking or review-score average for these two games. They also do not establish that one title has more missions, a larger upgrade tree or a longer campaign.
Sony reported that the Marvel’s Spider-Man games collectively passed 50 million copies since 2018 in a September 18, 2026 corporate article. That is a franchise-wide figure, not a sales total for Spider-Man 2 alone and not evidence that Spider-Man 2 or Wolverine is the better purchase for a particular player.
Bottom line for PS5 players
Pick Marvel’s Wolverine when the essential fantasy is being Logan: one central hero, a directed non-open-world adventure, mutant abilities, claws and Rage. Pick Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 when the essential fantasy is being Spider-Man in motion: an expansive New York, web-swinging and aerial shortcuts, plus the ability to switch between Peter Parker and Miles Morales in a solo campaign.
Those are different design goals rather than two versions of the same game. The right choice depends on whether you value Wolverine’s focused character story and combat identity or Spider-Man 2’s city-scale traversal and dual-hero structure.
