For most players on the standard PS5, start with Performance Mode. Insomniac described it as a 60-fps target with ray tracing and intended it to be the default presentation. On PS5 Pro, Performance Pro targets 60 fps with standard Fidelity visuals reconstructed through PSSR, while Fidelity Pro targets 30 fps and adds more advanced ray-tracing features. These are targets and mode descriptions, not a promise of a locked frame rate in every scene.
Before judging image quality, update the game. Insomniac’s version 1.002.000 update adds Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) to PS5, enabled by default, for stated improvements to image detail and stability. QSSR and the PS5 Pro’s PSSR are image-reconstruction technologies; neither is a separate frame-rate mode.
Which Marvel’s Wolverine setting should you use?
The best setting depends on whether you value responsive movement or the most elaborate lighting. Use this as the starting point for each setup:
| Console or display | Documented choice | What it prioritizes | Practical recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base PS5 | Performance Mode | 60-fps target with ray tracing | Choose first if smooth camera movement and combat response matter most. |
| Base PS5 | Graphics-optimization choice | More graphical optimization than the performance choice | Use it when image detail matters more than the 60-fps target. Exact resolution values are not established in the cited sources. |
| PS5 Pro | Performance Pro | 60-fps target with standard Fidelity visuals reconstructed through PSSR | The sensible Pro default for players who want a higher frame-rate target and enhanced reconstruction. |
| PS5 Pro | Fidelity Pro | 30 fps with advanced ray-tracing capabilities | Pick it when advanced reflections and lighting features matter more than motion smoothness. |
| Compatible 120-Hz display with VRR | 120 Hz Display Mode plus VRR | Variable, uncapped output that can exceed the selected 30- or 60-fps target | Enable it only when the television or monitor, HDMI input, console and game are all configured for VRR and 120 Hz. |
The mode descriptions come from Insomniac statements reported by TechRadar and a PS5 Pro review by Push Square. They describe intended targets and observed mode behavior, not an independently measured guarantee for every location or patch.

Check the game version before comparing graphics
Marvel’s Wolverine launched worldwide for PS5 on September 15, 2026, and is also available on PS5 Pro. The official game page and FAQ are maintained by PlayStation.
Insomniac’s October 6, 2026 version 1.002.000 update changed the image-reconstruction path on PS5. Its notes state that the game now uses QSSR for improvements to image detail and image stability, and that QSSR is on by default. The update also addresses stability, crashes, bugs, visual polish, accessibility issues and localization issues. If two players report different sharpness or shimmering, confirm that both have installed this update before drawing conclusions.
Base PS5: Performance Mode versus graphics optimization
Performance Mode
Insomniac’s pre-release comments, reported on August 14, 2026, say the team built the base-PS5 Performance Mode around a 60-fps target with ray tracing. Senior Project Director Jess Reiner-Reed said the team knew early in development that it wanted to make the game 60 fps in Performance Mode and that “the game feels super smooth.” Head of Technology Mike Fitzgerald described the 60-fps-with-ray-tracing approach as the intended default. Those statements establish the design target and priority: motion and responsiveness without removing ray-traced effects.

Performance Mode is therefore the appropriate first choice for fast traversal, close-range combat and players who notice judder more than small changes in fine detail. A target does not mean that every frame is rendered at exactly 60 fps in every scene; heavy effects, streaming and individual patches can change the instantaneous result.

Graphics-optimization choice
The base PS5 also offers a graphics-optimization choice, described in launch coverage as the alternative for players who prefer image quality. The reviewed official material does not publish a reliable internal-resolution number, output-resolution range or complete list of visual toggles for this option. Do not treat online resolution figures without a stated console, mode, patch and measurement method as authoritative.
Choose this mode when you are playing on a large screen from a fixed distance, prefer denser detail and lighting, or are comfortable with a lower frame-rate target. If the camera feels less immediate during a trial scene, switching back to Performance Mode is the meaningful adjustment; changing QSSR is not, because QSSR is enabled by the patch rather than exposed as a competing frame-rate preset.
Does Performance Mode include ray tracing?
Yes, the developer description reported by TechRadar specifically pairs the base-PS5 60-fps target with ray tracing. That does not mean it uses every ray-tracing feature available in the Pro mode. PS5 Pro’s Fidelity Pro is separately described as adding advanced ray-tracing capabilities.

Performance Pro
In its September 10, 2026 review, Push Square describes Performance Pro as running at a 60-fps target while outputting standard Fidelity visuals improved through PSSR. This is the Pro option for players who want the responsiveness associated with a 60-fps presentation without giving up the standard Fidelity image treatment.

The official PlayStation FAQ confirms that Marvel’s Wolverine uses the PS5 Pro’s PSSR feature, but it does not publish exact per-mode render resolutions. PSSR should therefore be understood as reconstruction and presentation technology, not as a numeric resolution setting that can be compared without a controlled measurement.
Fidelity Pro
Fidelity Pro is described as a 30-fps mode with advanced ray-tracing capabilities. It is aimed at players who prefer the richer lighting and reflection features over the fluidity of the 60-fps target. Thirty fps can look cinematic on a stable display, but camera turns and rapid aiming will feel less immediate than in Performance Pro.
How to decide on PS5 Pro
- Pick Performance Pro for traversal, melee combat, camera responsiveness and a 60-fps target.
- Pick Fidelity Pro for slower exploration, a viewing distance that makes lighting differences obvious, or a deliberate preference for advanced ray tracing.
- Try each mode in the same busy environment rather than judging from a quiet menu. The difference is most apparent while rotating the camera through crowds, reflective surfaces and dense scenery.
QSSR and PSSR: what the acronyms mean
QSSR stands for Quick Spectral Super Resolution. In its October 1, 2026 technology announcement, PlayStation.Blog calls it a new performance tier of AI upscaling developed from Project Amethyst. The announcement says its streamlined neural network and hand-tuned implementation are intended to improve image detail and stability on PS5, and identifies Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first titles to use it.
PSSR stands for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, the PS5 Pro feature identified in the game’s official FAQ. In Wolverine, PSSR is associated with the Pro presentation, while QSSR was added to the PS5 version by update 1.002.000. Neither term names Performance Mode, Fidelity Pro or another frame-rate preset. They describe how the game reconstructs its displayed image from the rendered data.

Insomniac Head of Technology Mike Fitzgerald described QSSR this way: “QSSR adds more pixel-level clarity and stability to our environments, bringing out extra detail amidst the busy streets of Madripoor, the dense alleyways of Shinjuku, and many other areas across Logan’s epic journey.” The statement is a description of the intended benefit, not a published percentage increase in sharpness or a measured resolution result.
How to use VRR and 120 Hz
Insomniac’s VRR support guidance, published November 19, 2025, says all of its PS5 titles support VRR with the latest game and system updates. It also explains that the main effect of the PS5 VRR system setting is to slightly increase dynamic image-resolution targets. When a display accepts 120-Hz high-frame-rate input, 120 Hz Display Mode is active and VRR is enabled, output becomes variable and uncapped. Depending on gameplay, it can exceed the selected 30- or 60-fps target by 50% or more; the actual rate varies with the scene.
Requirements
- A television or monitor that supports VRR and 120-Hz input.
- A VRR-capable HDMI input on that display, with VRR enabled for the input if the display requires a separate toggle.
- An up-to-date PS5 system and game.
- A suitable cable. Insomniac recommends an HDMI 2.1 cable when troubleshooting VRR; the cable alone cannot create VRR or 120 Hz if the display, input or console setting does not support them.
Setup steps
- Install the latest PS5 system software and Marvel’s Wolverine update, including version 1.002.000 or later where available.
- Connect the console to the display’s VRR-capable 120-Hz HDMI input. Use an HDMI 2.1 cable if the display’s specifications call for it.
- Open the display’s settings for that input and turn on its VRR or variable-refresh option. Display menus use different names, so verify that the selected HDMI port—not merely the television model—supports the feature.
- On PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and set VRR and 120 Hz Output to automatic or enabled options supported by your display.
- In Marvel’s Wolverine, enable 120 Hz Display Mode when the option is available, then enable the game’s VRR-related option if shown.
- Test a busy gameplay section with rapid camera movement. VRR smooths changes in frame timing; it does not force the game to sustain a particular frame rate.
If VRR is not working
- Confirm the cable is connected directly to the console and the display’s compatible HDMI input rather than an older switch, receiver or incompatible port.
- Check both the console setting and the television’s per-input VRR setting. A cable cannot compensate for VRR being disabled in either location.
- Install updates on both the system and game before comparing behavior.
- If 120-Hz mode is unavailable, verify that the display accepts 120-Hz input at the selected resolution and that the game’s 120 Hz Display Mode is active.
- Remember that VRR is variable and uncapped. A changing counter or a different feel between areas is expected; it is not evidence by itself that the mode is broken.
Insomniac’s full compatibility and troubleshooting guidance is available in What is VRR support?.
What is not yet established about resolution and frame rate
The cited official pages and reviewed coverage do not provide a complete table of internal-resolution ranges, every graphics-menu toggle or patch-specific resolution behavior. They also do not provide an independent, named benchmark for the current patched game. A claim such as “the game renders at exactly a particular resolution” needs a source that specifies the console, selected mode, patch and measurement method.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
The reliable distinctions are therefore qualitative and mode-based: base-PS5 Performance Mode targets 60 fps with ray tracing; the base-PS5 graphics option favors graphical optimization; PS5 Pro Performance Pro targets 60 fps with standard Fidelity visuals reconstructed through PSSR; Fidelity Pro targets 30 fps with advanced ray tracing; and VRR with 120 Hz can vary above those targets. None of those descriptions guarantees a locked rate in every scene.
Recommended settings by player priority
You want the smoothest combat
Use Performance Mode on a base PS5 or Performance Pro on PS5 Pro. Add VRR and 120 Hz Display Mode only if your display supports the complete chain. These choices put motion and response ahead of the highest ray-tracing feature set.
You want the most advanced lighting
Use Fidelity Pro on PS5 Pro. On a base PS5, use the graphics-optimization choice, understanding that the available sources do not establish a matching resolution number or guarantee the same advanced ray-tracing features as Fidelity Pro.
You are sensitive to image shimmer
Install the current patch first, because QSSR is enabled by default on PS5 and is intended to improve image detail and stability. On PS5 Pro, PSSR is part of the supported presentation. Judge the result during movement in detailed environments rather than from a static screenshot.
You use a 60-Hz television
Choose between the normal performance and graphics options for your console. The 120-Hz Display Mode and its variable, uncapped behavior require a compatible 120-Hz display, so a 60-Hz panel cannot provide that part of the setup.
Bottom line
Start with Performance Mode on the base PS5 and Performance Pro on PS5 Pro. They are the documented 60-fps-target choices and retain substantial image features. Move to the graphics-optimization option or Fidelity Pro only when richer visual treatment is worth less fluid motion. Keep QSSR or PSSR in their proper role as image reconstruction, update the game before comparing results, and use VRR with 120 Hz only when every display and connection requirement is satisfied.
