Play in this order: Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, then Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, then Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. PlayStation describes Miles Morales as continuing the first game’s story one year later, while Spider-Man 2 brings Peter Parker and Miles together again about nine months after that.
If you are buying your first two games together, compare the Miles Morales Ultimate Edition. The US PlayStation Store lists it with both Miles Morales and the PS5 version of Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, including all three chapters of The City That Never Sleeps expansion.
The correct PS5 story order
The series is easiest to follow when you start with Peter Parker’s original adventure and then move forward chronologically:
- Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered — Peter Parker’s first game in the series on PS5.
- Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales — Miles’s story, set one year after the first game.
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 — Peter and Miles’s next adventure, set about nine months after Miles Morales.
This is the sequence given in PlayStation’s official series guide. It is more than a recommendation based on release dates: the games are connected by their fictional timeline, so character relationships and earlier events arrive in the order the series established them.

Why Remastered comes first
Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered is the PS5 presentation of the first main game. It introduces Peter Parker’s version of New York and establishes the story that Miles Morales continues. Starting here gives you the context for why Miles is part of the next chapter and prevents the opening of his game from functioning as an introduction to events you have not yet seen.
Why Miles Morales comes before Spider-Man 2
PlayStation places Miles Morales one year after the first game. The same guide places Spider-Man 2 about nine months later, with Peter and Miles reunited. That makes Miles Morales the middle chapter even if your main interest is the larger Peter-and-Miles story in Spider-Man 2.
Which edition should you buy?
Your best choice depends on whether you need Peter’s first game, Miles’s standalone story, or both. These are the meaningful PS5 options described by PlayStation’s current store listings:

Best choice for each kind of new player
You want to experience the whole story
Buy the Miles Morales Ultimate Edition if it is available in your region and its current price suits you. Play the included Remastered first, then Miles Morales, and buy Spider-Man 2 after finishing the second game. This route gives you the first Peter story, Miles’s follow-up and the expansion chapters associated with the first game.
You want only Peter Parker’s first game
Choose standalone Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered for PS5. It is the direct starting point and includes all three chapters of The City That Never Sleeps, so you do not need a separate purchase to complete the first game’s listed expansion content.
You already own Remastered
Choose the Miles Morales Standard Edition if you want to continue the story. Buying the Ultimate Edition would duplicate the PS5 Remastered component that you already have, unless a specific local promotion makes the bundle worthwhile.

You only want to play as Miles
The Standard Edition is the straightforward option. It gives you Miles Morales without requiring you to buy the first game again. You can still play it before Spider-Man 2, but the opening assumes the world and characters introduced by the earlier game.

You already own the first game on PS4
Do not assume that every PS4 copy has the same PS5 path. The US PlayStation Store states that PS4 disc owners must insert the disc whenever they download or play the PS5 digital version. A disc-free PS5 Digital Edition cannot use that disc-based route. These conditions apply to the stated disc situation; edition eligibility, upgrade terms and availability should be checked in your local store for your exact copy.
What is included in the Ultimate Edition?
PlayStation’s US Store describes the Miles Morales Ultimate Edition as including:
- Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales for PS4 and PS5.
- Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered for PS5.
The same listing describes Remastered as the complete game with all three chapters of The City That Never Sleeps. In practical terms, the bundle is designed for a new player who wants to own both connected games rather than for someone seeking only Miles’s campaign.

What the bundle does not change
The Ultimate Edition does not change the recommended order. Start the included Remastered, continue with Miles Morales, and move to Spider-Man 2 afterward. It is a packaging decision, not a different continuity or an alternate version of the narrative.

Do you need to play Remastered before Miles Morales?
You can start Miles Morales by itself, particularly if you already own the Standard Edition. However, playing Remastered first is the better choice for a first-time player because PlayStation explicitly presents Miles Morales as the continuation of the first game’s story. The one-year jump means the sequel is not an unrelated introduction; it follows an established Peter-and-Miles setting.
If you are short on time, read the game’s own recap material before starting, but a recap is not equivalent to experiencing the first story. The most complete route remains Remastered followed by Miles Morales.

The City That Never Sleeps is the three-chapter expansion included with the PS5 Remastered edition. PlayStation’s series guide also identifies it as included with the PS4 Game of the Year Edition. If you are choosing between editions, verify that the listing specifically says the expansion is included; do not infer that from an old PS4 or launch-era description.
For a first playthrough, the expansion belongs to the first game’s Peter Parker chapter. You can complete it before moving to Miles Morales if you want all of the listed Remastered content together. The official edition descriptions establish inclusion, but they do not require a particular completion schedule for moving through the main trilogy.

Digital, disc and regional availability checks
Check the exact platform label
Store pages can show PS4 and PS5 versions together or separately. Confirm that the product you are selecting includes the PS5 entitlement you expect, especially when a listing mentions both generations.
Check disc requirements before deleting anything
For the PS4 disc route described by the US store, the original disc remains necessary whenever you download or play the PS5 digital version. Keep it available. A PS5 Digital Edition without a disc drive cannot authenticate that disc-based route.
Check your local storefront
The cited bundle and disc wording comes from the US PlayStation Store. Regional storefronts can present different editions, upgrade rules, currencies or availability. Use your own account’s store page for the final terms rather than relying on a guide written for another country.

PlayStation’s September 30, 2020 launch article described the original Standard, Ultimate and upgrade routes for that release period. Its prices and voucher-expiry information are historical. They should not be treated as current prices, current promotions or continuing eligibility rules.
When an older guide tells you to choose an edition because of a launch voucher or quotes a specific amount, treat that as a record of the 2020 launch, not as a present-day offer. Compare the current contents shown in your local store instead: whether Remastered is included, whether the three expansion chapters are listed, and whether your disc or console configuration is supported.
