The best Marvell alternative depends on the layer you are buying. For a hyperscaler designing a custom AI accelerator, Broadcom is the clearest comparison: Gartner wrote on July 16, 2026, “Broadcom is the Company to Beat for Custom AI Silicon.” For an integrated AI infrastructure stack, NVIDIA combines accelerator, fabric and photonics products, but it is also a Marvell partner through NVLink Fusion rather than a simple substitute for every Marvell component. Marvell remains differentiated when one program needs Ethernet and PCIe switching, optical DSPs and photonics, plus a custom ASIC co-designed around a particular hyperscaler workload.

This guide separates merchant networking silicon from custom AI-chip development, maps the relevant products and protocols, and gives a selection process that avoids treating a headline terabit number as a complete comparison.

What “Marvell alternatives” actually covers

“Marvell alternatives” is not one product category. Marvell sells semiconductor building blocks and co-designed silicon used at several points in an AI data center:

  • Merchant networking silicon: Ethernet and PCIe switch devices for scale-out, scale-across and scale-up networks.
  • Optical and electrical interconnect: PAM and coherent/coherent-lite DSPs, laser drivers, transimpedance amplifiers (TIAs), silicon-photonics and co-packaged-optics (CPO) components, linear- or active-optical-cable chipsets, and PCIe retimers.
  • Custom AI silicon: ASIC IP and complete custom products co-designed for one hyperscaler’s workload and infrastructure strategy.

A supplier can be a strong alternative in one layer and irrelevant in another. A 51.2 Tb/s Ethernet switch, for example, does not by itself replace a custom XPU design service, an optical DSP, or an InfiniBand fabric. Start by naming the layer, network tier and protocol you are selecting.

Marvell’s portfolio baseline

Switching for scale-out, scale-across and scale-up

Marvell describes its data-center switching portfolio as Ethernet and PCIe switch silicon led by the Teralynx family. Its portfolio maps Teralynx devices to scale-out and scale-across networks, while PCIe switches address scale-up connectivity inside a server or accelerator pod. Marvell’s scale-out materials describe Teralynx coverage from 12.8T to 102.4T. Those are Marvell’s stated product-family figures, not an independent throughput test or a promise that every device shares the same port configuration.

Scale-out links servers or accelerator nodes across a cluster, normally through an Ethernet fabric. Scale-across is the higher-radix portion of that fabric that connects many racks or pods. Scale-up links components within a node or tightly coupled pod, where PCIe and accelerator-specific protocols matter more than a generic Ethernet switch.

Optical connectivity and the interconnect stack

Marvell’s broader scale-out stack includes optical DSPs, TIAs, laser drivers, optical engines, active-electrical-cable (AEC) DSPs and telemetry. Its fiscal 2026 annual report lists PAM and coherent/coherent-lite DSPs, silicon photonics, CPO and linear-pluggable-optics (LPO) chipsets, data-center interconnect, AEC DSPs and PCIe retimers. These are infrastructure semiconductors intended for equipment makers and hyperscalers, not consumer networking products.

Custom silicon and protocol options

Marvell says its custom products are co-designed for a single hyperscaler’s workload and infrastructure plan. The company’s fiscal 2026 annual report lists custom ASIC IP for high-speed SerDes, compute, security, storage, silicon photonics, die-to-die interconnect, chiplets, CPO and custom high-bandwidth memory (HBM).

For scale-up, Marvell describes a portfolio spanning PCIe, UALink, ESUN and NVLink-compatible protocols, with the Teralynx T100 serving as an Ethernet bridge. Marvell also notes that scale-up protocols are still developing and that several approaches exist. Compatibility therefore has to be checked against the exact accelerator, switch firmware and system topology; a protocol name alone does not establish interoperability.

What Marvell’s revenue mix says—and does not say

Fiscal 2026 measure Marvell-reported figure How to interpret it
Data-center share of total revenue Approximately three-quarters Company-reported in Marvell’s May 2026 proxy statement; not an independent market-share estimate.
Optical interconnect share of data-center revenue Roughly one-half Company-reported mix for fiscal 2026, not a measure of optical market leadership.
Custom silicon share of data-center revenue Approximately one-quarter Company-reported mix for fiscal 2026; it does not identify individual customer programs.
Optical-interconnect growth About 50% compound annual growth for five straight years Marvell’s reported growth statement; the period and calculation are company disclosures, not an independent forecast.

Broadcom: the strongest custom-AI-silicon alternative in the evidence

Why it is the closest comparison for custom ASIC programs

Gartner’s July 16, 2026 assessment calls Broadcom “the Company to Beat for Custom AI Silicon.” Gartner points to Broadcom’s combination of ASIC design, networking, foundational IP, advanced packaging, SerDes, memory and die-to-die interconnect. Those capabilities overlap directly with the work required to turn a hyperscaler’s architecture into a manufacturable accelerator and its surrounding fabric.

That positioning makes Broadcom the first vendor to evaluate when the primary decision is a custom XPU or AI-ASIC program. The relevant comparison is not a retail chip specification; it is the ability to co-design compute, memory, SerDes, packaging, chiplets and the network interfaces, then support validation and production. A buyer should request evidence for its own process node, HBM generation, package size, power envelope, software stack and manufacturing schedule rather than infer suitability from Gartner’s broad market statement.

Concrete merchant-switch evidence

Broadcom’s product page lists the BCM78900 as a “51.2 Tb/s StrataXGS® Tomahawk® 5 Ethernet Switch.” This establishes a current data-center Ethernet-switch offering. It does not establish a specification-for-specification match with Marvell Teralynx: the available information does not provide a common table for port speeds, buffer architecture, telemetry features, packet formats, software, power or shipping configurations. Compare those fields directly in vendor data sheets and qualification samples.

When Broadcom is a good fit

  • A hyperscaler wants a single partner with deep ASIC, SerDes, packaging and networking IP.
  • The project needs custom accelerator silicon rather than a merchant switch alone.
  • The architecture is Ethernet-centric and can use a broad merchant-switch ecosystem.
  • The team can manage a substantial co-design and validation program instead of buying a finished accelerator platform.

NVIDIA: integrated infrastructure, plus a Marvell partnership

What NVIDIA supplies

NVIDIA publishes Quantum-X InfiniBand Photonics switches and Spectrum-X Ethernet Photonics switches. The company describes Spectrum-X Ethernet Photonics as planned for availability in the second half of 2026. That timing is a forward-looking vendor statement; confirm launch status, regional availability and production quantities before committing a deployment.

NVIDIA also publishes performance claims about the benefits of co-packaged optics. Treat those figures as NVIDIA’s own claims, not as an independent comparison with Marvell or Broadcom. An evaluation should use the same traffic pattern, link length, optics, power limits, failure model and software revision for every candidate.

Why NVIDIA is not a simple one-for-one substitute

On March 31, 2026, Marvell and NVIDIA announced an NVLink Fusion partnership. The announcement says Marvell will provide custom XPUs and NVLink Fusion-compatible scale-up networking, while NVIDIA supplies platform components including Vera CPU, ConnectX NICs, BlueField DPUs, NVLink and Spectrum-X switches. The relationship puts the companies in both partnership and competitive contexts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your design uses NVLink Fusion, NVIDIA may be the platform anchor while Marvell supplies a custom XPU or compatible networking component. If your design is selecting merchant Ethernet or optical silicon independently, the competitive question is different. Do not remove either company from consideration merely because the partnership exists; instead, define which component is sourced from whom and who owns system validation.

When NVIDIA is a good fit

  • The project values an integrated accelerator, NIC, DPU, switching and software platform.
  • InfiniBand or Spectrum-X Ethernet is a deliberate architectural choice.
  • Fast time to a qualified AI cluster matters more than assembling every layer from separate merchant suppliers.
  • The team accepts platform-level coupling and must verify product availability, software support and roadmap commitments.

Comparison by the layer you are buying

Decision layer Marvell Broadcom NVIDIA What to verify
Custom AI accelerator Custom products co-designed for a hyperscaler; IP includes compute, SerDes, packaging, chiplets, HBM and die-to-die interconnect. Gartner’s July 16, 2026 assessment identifies Broadcom as the company to beat for custom AI silicon; capabilities span ASIC design, networking, packaging, SerDes, memory and die-to-die links. Usually evaluated as part of an integrated NVIDIA platform; the Marvell partnership adds NVLink Fusion-compatible custom-XPU work. Architecture ownership, software, HBM, package, power, yield, manufacturing milestones and total program risk.
Ethernet switch silicon Teralynx family described from 12.8T to 102.4T across scale-out and scale-across; PCIe switches cover scale-up roles. BCM78900 listed as a 51.2 Tb/s StrataXGS Tomahawk 5 Ethernet switch. Spectrum-X Ethernet Photonics switches are part of an integrated platform; product timing for the photonics version is stated as second half of 2026. Port map, radix, buffer, telemetry, congestion control, packet formats, SDK, power, optics and qualification status.
InfiniBand fabric The cited portfolio description emphasizes Ethernet, PCIe and compatibility options rather than a standalone Marvell InfiniBand fabric. Not established in the available evidence for a directly comparable InfiniBand product. Quantum-X InfiniBand Photonics switches are explicitly listed. Topology, collective-communication performance, management software, NIC/DPU support and operational skills.
Optical interconnect DSPs, TIAs, drivers, optical engines, silicon photonics, CPO/LPO chipsets, DCI and AEC DSPs. Foundational IP and packaging capabilities are cited by Gartner, but a complete like-for-like optical product matrix is not established. Quantum-X and Spectrum-X photonics switches, plus published CPO benefit claims. Reach, lane rate, thermal design, pluggable versus co-packaged optics, serviceability and supply.
Integration model Multi-layer merchant components plus customer-specific co-design. ASIC and merchant networking capabilities with custom-program support. Integrated platform spanning accelerators, NICs, DPUs, NVLink and switches. Who controls firmware, drivers, reference designs, validation and field support.

The table is a decision map, not a performance ranking. The available sources do not provide a common independent benchmark, pricing comparison or complete deployment study across the three suppliers.

How to select an alternative step by step

  1. Write the buying requirement in one sentence. State whether you need a merchant Ethernet switch, a scale-up bridge, an optical DSP or a custom AI accelerator. If the sentence contains “and,” split it into separate work packages.
  2. Place the link in the topology. Mark each connection as scale-out between nodes, scale-across between pods, or scale-up within a node or accelerator island. A switch sized for one tier may be unsuitable for another even when its aggregate bandwidth looks sufficient.
  3. Choose the protocol before the vendor. Decide whether the fabric is Ethernet, InfiniBand, PCIe, UALink, ESUN, NVLink-compatible or a hybrid. For developing scale-up protocols, obtain a compatibility matrix covering the exact accelerator, bridge, firmware and operating system.
  4. Define the integration boundary. In a multi-vendor design, assign responsibility for optics, switch SDK, NIC or DPU firmware, telemetry, congestion control, failure recovery and cluster management. In an integrated platform, document what is gained in validation and what coupling is accepted.
  5. Set measurable acceptance tests. Include bidirectional throughput, tail latency, collective-communication time, packet loss under congestion, optical error rate, recovery time, power per delivered terabit and serviceability. Use the same traffic generators, cables, optics, firmware and thermal conditions for every candidate.
  6. Request program evidence. For custom silicon, ask for process-node history, HBM and package experience, SerDes compliance, die-to-die interoperability, software milestones, yield assumptions and production capacity. For switches, request data sheets, SDK release policy, telemetry schema, buffer behavior and qualification references.
  7. Check availability against the deployment window. A product described as planned for the second half of 2026 is not equivalent to a shipping device. Verify sampling, production qualification, regional support and lead times in writing.
  8. Model the five-year operating cost. Include optics and cables, power and cooling, software or support contracts, spare inventory, firmware validation and the engineering cost of replacing one layer without disrupting the rest of the fabric. Public material cited here does not provide comparable prices, so a quote is required.

Technical questions that prevent bad substitutions

Bandwidth is not a complete switch comparison

Aggregate switching capacity is only one field. Two devices with similar headline numbers can differ in port count, lane breakout, packet-buffer design, congestion management, telemetry, packet-processing features, power and software maturity. The 51.2 Tb/s BCM78900 listing and Marvell’s 12.8T–102.4T Teralynx range should therefore be treated as starting points for a data-sheet review, not proof of equivalence.

Optics change the system design

DSP, TIA, laser-driver and optical-engine choices influence reach, insertion loss, thermal load, link diagnostics and field replacement. CPO can reduce electrical reach inside a package, but it can also change service procedures and failure isolation. LPO may alter where signal processing occurs and what host switch support is required. Compare the complete optical path, not a single chipset.

Scale-up protocols are a moving target

PCIe is familiar for host and device attachment, while UALink, ESUN and NVLink-compatible approaches target tightly coupled accelerator fabrics. Marvell explicitly describes this area as still developing. Confirm version, topology, coherency assumptions, switch or bridge role, software stack and interoperability test results for the exact release you will deploy.

Custom silicon is a program, not a catalogue SKU

A custom ASIC decision affects architecture, verification, packaging, memory, board design, firmware, compilers, runtime libraries, manufacturing yield and support years after tape-out. Broadcom’s Gartner positioning and Marvell’s custom-IP list identify relevant capabilities, but neither statement guarantees a schedule or performance outcome for your design. Require stage gates and exit criteria before selecting a partner.

Which alternative fits common buyer situations?

Hyperscaler building a proprietary accelerator

Shortlist Broadcom and Marvell for a structured custom-silicon evaluation. Broadcom has the strongest explicit Gartner positioning for custom AI silicon; Marvell offers custom products plus optical, SerDes, chiplet, HBM and die-to-die IP. Select on architecture fit, software ownership, packaging and delivery risk—not on a merchant-switch bandwidth figure.

Enterprise deploying a supported AI cluster

An integrated NVIDIA platform may reduce compatibility work when the organization wants accelerators, NICs, DPUs and a managed fabric from one ecosystem. Validate the exact Spectrum-X or Quantum-X product, software release and delivery date. A merchant design using Marvell or Broadcom switch silicon can provide more component choice, but it requires stronger in-house integration and qualification.

Equipment maker designing an Ethernet switch

Compare Marvell Teralynx and Broadcom switching silicon at the device, SDK and board level. Ask both suppliers for the same port map, buffer, telemetry, packet-processing, power and lifecycle data. If the product needs optical integration, include DSP, TIA, driver, CPO or LPO requirements in the initial request rather than adding them after switch selection.

Research or infrastructure team choosing scale-up links

Start with the accelerator vendor’s supported protocol and software. Then evaluate PCIe, UALink, ESUN or NVLink-compatible bridges and switches for topology, coherency, firmware and failure handling. Marvell’s Teralynx T100 Ethernet-bridge description is relevant only if its interfaces and software match the intended system.

Costs, availability and evidence limits

The cited material does not establish public prices for Marvell, Broadcom or NVIDIA switch silicon, optical components, custom-ASIC programs or integrated AI systems. These products are sold through enterprise and hyperscale design engagements, so pricing depends on volume, customization, package, memory, support and manufacturing commitments. A retail-switch price would not be a valid proxy.

Nor is there a common independent benchmark covering Marvell Teralynx, Broadcom Tomahawk and NVIDIA photonics or InfiniBand products across identical workloads. Gartner’s statements are market positioning, Marvell’s revenue figures are company disclosures, and NVIDIA’s CPO performance figures are vendor claims. Use them to form a shortlist, then run a controlled qualification.

Recheck NVIDIA’s Spectrum-X Ethernet Photonics timing and all vendor roadmaps near purchase approval. The announced second-half-2026 availability and other roadmap descriptions can change between announcement and production.

Bottom line

Choose Broadcom first when the question is “who can co-design our custom AI silicon and its foundational interconnect?” Choose NVIDIA when an integrated accelerator-and-fabric platform, InfiniBand or Spectrum-X is the priority—but account for its NVLink Fusion partnership with Marvell. Keep Marvell on the shortlist when optical connectivity, Ethernet and PCIe switching, scale-up bridges and custom silicon need to be coordinated across one design program. The defensible choice comes from matching the supplier to the exact layer, protocol, topology and integration boundary, then verifying the result with identical tests and written availability commitments.
