Start with Ultimate Fantastic Four #21–23, then read Marvel Zombies: Dead Days #1, Marvel Zombies (2005) #1–5, the related Ultimate Fantastic Four #30–32 and Black Panther (2005) #27–30 issues, followed by Marvel Zombies 2 #1–5 and Marvel Zombies Return #1–5. That route introduces the original Zombie Universe, follows its central storyline and stops before optional crossovers and later alternate branches. You do not need to read every comic carrying the Marvel Zombies name.
The beginner reading order at a glance
The sequence below is an editorial route through the original Zombieverse material. It balances the first appearance, in-story chronology and the main continuation without pretending that every later title shares one uninterrupted timeline.
- Ultimate Fantastic Four #21–23
- Marvel Zombies: Dead Days #1 (chronological placement; move it after the original miniseries if you prefer publication order)
- Marvel Zombies (2005) #1–5
- Ultimate Fantastic Four #30–32, then Black Panther (2005) #27–30
- Marvel Zombies 2 #1–5
- Marvel Zombies Return #1–5
After step six, choose optional expansions according to your interest. Marvel Zombies 3–5, crossover miniseries, anthologies and later series are not prerequisites for understanding this original route.

The first appearance is not the self-titled miniseries
The Zombie Universe first appears in Ultimate Fantastic Four #21–23. Marvel’s reading-list entry identifies this arc as the story in which Ultimate Reed Richards discovers the Zombieverse. Consequently, opening with Marvel Zombies (2005) gives you the famous series first, but it skips the universe’s actual introduction.

Dead Days is a prequel published later
Marvel Zombies: Dead Days #1 is a prequel to the first Marvel Zombies miniseries. Reading it immediately before the 2005 series gives the cleanest story chronology. If you want to experience the books in the order readers originally received them, read Dead Days after Marvel Zombies (2005) #1–5 instead. Neither choice changes the central story; the difference is whether you value fictional chronology or publication sequence.
The brand covers several realities and formats
The Marvel Zombies label includes direct sequels, tie-in appearances, crossovers, anthologies and independent later universes. A title’s branding alone does not prove that it is the next chapter of the original Zombieverse. Treat the order as a map of related entry points, not as a single numbered mega-series.
Step-by-step: the original Zombieverse route
1. Ultimate Fantastic Four #21–23
Read all three issues together. This is the first appearance of the Zombie Universe and the recommended on-ramp for a new reader. The arc supplies the context that the self-titled miniseries assumes: it establishes that the Fantastic Four can encounter a reality in which familiar Marvel characters are infected and transformed.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →These issues are especially useful if you want to understand why the later material is treated as an alternate-universe saga rather than as an ordinary change to the main Marvel continuity. Do not start with an isolated issue; #21–23 is a single introductory run in the recommended guide.
2. Marvel Zombies: Dead Days #1
Place this one-shot here when you want chronological order. It is explicitly a prequel to the first Marvel Zombies miniseries, so it fills in events that occur before that five-issue story.
There is a practical reason some readers move it later: publication order presents the original miniseries first. If you are discovering the franchise through collected editions or a list that follows release sequence, reading Dead Days after Marvel Zombies (2005) is also defensible. Label your checklist “chronological” or “publication” so you do not accidentally treat the two sequences as contradictory.

3. Marvel Zombies (2005) #1–5
This is the original self-titled limited series and the center of the beginner route. Read the five issues consecutively rather than interleaving them with later tie-ins. At this point you have the introductory Ultimate Fantastic Four arc, the prequel (if using chronology) and the principal miniseries in place.
When a digital or collected edition uses only the title Marvel Zombies, check that it is the 2005 five-issue series. Later books reuse the name and numbering conventions, so the publication year and issue range matter.
4. Ultimate Fantastic Four #30–32, then Black Panther (2005) #27–30
These follow-up appearances are part of the connected original-universe material. Read the three Ultimate Fantastic Four issues first, followed by the four Black Panther issues. The recommended guide groups them as the next block after the original miniseries rather than treating them as optional background.
The Black Panther range is sometimes shortened in collected-edition descriptions to #28–30 because that is the range included in a particular omnibus listing. If you are tracking individual issues, use the full #27–30 range given in the reading-order guide; if your collection labels the contents differently, follow the edition’s table of contents and avoid buying a duplicate issue solely because of a numbering discrepancy.
5. Marvel Zombies 2 #1–5
Read the complete five-issue sequel after the connected Ultimate Fantastic Four and Black Panther material. It is the core continuation of the original Zombieverse storyline, not an anthology or a detached crossover.

6. Marvel Zombies Return #1–5
Finish the original route with all five issues of Marvel Zombies Return. The researched reading-order guide treats Marvel Zombies 2 and Marvel Zombies Return as the core continuation and conclusion of the original Zombieverse storyline.
Once you reach the end of Return, you have completed the short path a beginner needs for the original saga. Everything below is an expansion, a crossover, an anthology or a separate branch unless a collection specifically identifies it as connected material.
Chronological order versus publication order
Both approaches are legitimate. Use the first column if you want events arranged inside the fiction; use the second if you want the sequence in which the major books were released.

| Publication-oriented route | Ultimate Fantastic Four #21–23 → Marvel Zombies (2005) #1–5 → Dead Days #1 → the connected Ultimate Fantastic Four, Black Panther, Marvel Zombies 2 and Return material | Lets you encounter the original miniseries before its later-released prequel, matching the way many readers first encountered the franchise. |
The exact placement of every tie-in is not universally uncontested. The table therefore presents the guide’s recommended editorial path, not an official Marvel-wide chronology for every series ever published under the label.
What to read after the original saga
Marvel Zombies 3–5
The third through fifth Marvel Zombies volumes are expansion material. They can be read after the original route, but they are not needed to understand the sequence ending with Marvel Zombies Return. Start them when you want more stories set around the concept rather than another required chapter.
Crossover and novelty miniseries
Marvel Zombies/Army of Darkness, Marvel Zombies: Evil Evolution, Marvel Zombies Supreme and Marvel Zombies Destroy! are among the optional titles identified by the reading-order guide. Their crossover or alternate-reality positioning is why they are better treated as side trips. Read them in any order after the core route unless a specific collected edition gives you a narrower sequence.

Anthology and independent branches
Marvel Zombies: Black, White & Blood is described as an anthology without explicit links to earlier timelines. It is suitable when you want short, self-contained material and do not want to maintain continuity notes.

Marvel Zombies: Dawn of Decay is described as a stand-alone all-ages story. It is an accessible choice for readers seeking a separate tone or a younger-reader entry point, but it is not a prerequisite for the original Zombieverse.
Other later branded series
Marvel’s indexed series catalog also lists Marvel Zombies: Resurrection, Marvel Zombies: Red Band and Marvel Zombies: War Zone, among other titles. The shared phrase “Marvel Zombies” in a catalog does not establish that these are sequential chapters after Return. Select them as independent branches unless the edition or story description specifically identifies a connection you want to follow.
The separate Marvel Zombies: Resurrection branch
Resurrection is a later entry point rather than a required continuation of the 2005 sequence. Marvel’s official indexed listing describes the 2020 series as four issues and gives its premise as a Galactus corpse bringing a cannibalistic virus to Earth.
The official trade paperback listing says the collection includes Marvel Zombies: Resurrection (2019) #1 and Marvel Zombies: Resurrection (2020) #1–4. That makes the paperback a straightforward way to read this branch without hunting five individual issues.
| Edition or series | Contents identified in the catalog | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Resurrection series | 2019 #1, followed by 2020 #1–4 | Separate later branch; not required for the original Zombieverse route. |
| Marvel Zombies: Resurrection Trade Paperback | 2019 #1 and 2020 #1–4 | Convenient collected entry point for the same branch. |
Do not insert Resurrection between Marvel Zombies 2 and Marvel Zombies Return. Reading it after the original route, or as its own first experiment with the brand, prevents the separate premise from being mistaken for a missing sequel chapter.

Collected editions or individual issues?
The Marvel Zomnibus
Comic Book Treasury’s listing for The Marvel Zomnibus gives it a broad selection of original-universe material, including Dead Days, Ultimate Fantastic Four #21–23 and #30–32, Black Panther #28–30, Marvel Zombies #1–5 and Marvel Zombies 2 #1–5, plus additional connected stories.
That breadth makes an omnibus useful if you want the main route in one purchase, but it is broader than the six-step beginner checklist. Its contents also do not exactly mirror every issue range in the reading-order guide: the listing names Black Panther #28–30, while the guide’s connected sequence is #27–30. Check the table of contents of the edition you are considering before assuming it replaces every individual issue.
Marvel Zomnibus Returns
The second omnibus, Marvel Zomnibus Returns, gathers later titles, including Resurrection. It is a natural follow-up for readers who have completed the original material and want a larger survey of subsequent stories rather than only the core conclusion.

Current retail availability for these omnibuses was not established. Treat the cited contents as a guide to what an edition is intended to collect, and verify the live publisher or bookseller listing, format and stock before purchasing.
Choosing single issues
- Choose individual issues if you want to preserve publication order, compare cover dates or collect a particular tie-in.
- Choose a collected edition if you want fewer gaps and do not need every optional crossover.
- Use a checklist when buying back issues: record the series name, year and issue range, because several books reuse “Marvel Zombies” in the title.
Which route should you choose?
For the shortest complete original story
Read Ultimate Fantastic Four #21–23, Dead Days #1, Marvel Zombies (2005) #1–5, Marvel Zombies 2 #1–5 and Marvel Zombies Return #1–5. Add the later Ultimate Fantastic Four and Black Panther blocks if you want the connected appearances included by the full guide.
For strict fictional chronology
Keep Dead Days before the 2005 miniseries, then follow the issue blocks in the numbered order above. Do not let later anthology or crossover books interrupt the route.
For publication-history context
Read the introductory Ultimate Fantastic Four arc, then the original 2005 miniseries, then Dead Days. Continue with the connected appearances and sequels. This preserves the reveal of the original miniseries before revisiting its prequel.
For a modern, self-contained experiment
Start with the Resurrection trade paperback or with the stand-alone Black, White & Blood or Dawn of Decay, depending on whether you want a later virus premise, an anthology format or an all-ages story. Move to the original route if you decide you want the foundational universe and its sequels.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Starting with issue #1 of the self-titled series and assuming nothing came before it. Read Ultimate Fantastic Four #21–23 first if first appearance matters to you.
- Calling Dead Days a sequel. It is a prequel; only its position in your reading list changes.
- Assuming every Marvel Zombies title is one timeline. Separate the original Zombieverse from crossovers, anthologies and later branches.
- Skipping the publication year in a digital storefront. Confirm that “Marvel Zombies” means the 2005 #1–5 miniseries, not another series with the same core title.
- Buying an omnibus without checking contents. Collected editions may use a different issue range or include extra stories; compare the contents with your checklist.
- Inserting Resurrection into the original sequence. Read it as a separate later branch unless you intentionally want to explore it after the original saga.
A practical checklist
- Decide whether your priority is story chronology or publication order.
- Mark Ultimate Fantastic Four #21–23 as the opening block.
- Place Dead Days before or after Marvel Zombies (2005) according to that choice.
- Read the five-issue 2005 miniseries without inserting optional crossovers.
- Add Ultimate Fantastic Four #30–32 and Black Panther (2005) #27–30 for the connected material.
- Finish the core continuation with Marvel Zombies 2 #1–5 and Marvel Zombies Return #1–5.
- Only then select expansions, anthologies or the separate Resurrection branch.
