Start with the hero you genuinely want to learn, then build a four-character team around range, assists, and when each teammate becomes available. For a first main, Arc System Works’ beginner guidance points to Captain America, Ms. Marvel, or Wolverine; Iron Man and Spider-Man are also relatively approachable. Storm and Danger are better saved for players who are comfortable with the fundamentals. Your first two team members matter most at the start of a round, because the other two do not become available until a stage transition or wall-bounce succeeds, or until you lose a round.

This guide explains how to choose a main, assemble a practical first team, learn assists and switches, and test your ideas without treating any example as a universal tier list. The official material describes MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls as a 4v4 tag fighter, but it does not establish one permanently strongest composition.

What makes team building different in Marvel Tōkon

MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls uses four-character teams, yet a match does not give you all four fighters immediately. PlayStation’s 2026 FAQ says you begin with access to the first two members. The third and fourth become available after a successful stage transition or wall-bounce, or after you lose a round.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That rule changes how you should draft a team. You are not only asking which four characters work together in a fully active lineup. You also need a useful opening pair: two characters you can control under pressure, whose assists help each other, and whose combined range gives you a way to approach or defend before the rest of the team unlocks.

  • Assist plan: how you call a teammate to help without immediately giving up control of your current fighter.
  • Switch plan: how you bring another character directly into play when the situation calls for it.

Think of the roster as a sequence rather than four isolated selections. A team that looks impressive on paper may feel awkward if its first two members cannot cover each other’s weaknesses.

Choose your main hero first

Arc System Works Game Director and Lead Battle Designer Kazuto Sekine gives the most useful beginner rule in his July 20, 2026 PlayStation Blog guide: “That’s why we recommend starting with the hero you like most and gradually expanding your roster from there.” Interest is practical, not sentimental. You will spend more time practicing a character you enjoy, and that practice is what turns a complicated move list into reliable reactions.

Use Ease of Use as a starting signal

Every character has an in-game Ease of Use rating. More stars mean the character is easier to use. Treat the rating as a learning-curve signal, not a power ranking. A high rating can help you understand movement, attacks, assists, and team actions sooner; it does not prove that the character is stronger in every matchup.

Character Official beginner guidance How to use that information
Captain America Identified as beginner-friendly A sensible first test if you want a character whose fundamentals you can learn before committing to a more demanding specialist.
Ms. Marvel Identified as beginner-friendly Use the high-accessibility recommendation to learn the game’s basic rhythm, then decide whether her feel suits your preferred spacing and attacks.
Wolverine Identified as beginner-friendly A strong starting choice if you enjoy aggressive close-range play; Sekine uses Wolverine as the close-range half of a range-complementary example team.
Iron Man Relatively easy to learn A useful first experiment for players who prefer distance; Sekine describes his ranged attacks as powerful.
Spider-Man Relatively easy to learn Try him early if the character is a favorite and the Ease of Use rating feels comfortable in your hands.
Storm Described as more advanced Choose her because you specifically want to learn her, not because an advanced label implies greater strength.
Danger Described as more advanced Consider her after you are comfortable with the game’s common team actions and timing.

The official guide does not publish a complete competitive ranking from these labels. Characters outside this table can still be excellent mains; the point is to combine personal interest with a learning curve you are willing to practice.

Decide what “fun” means to you

Before building a team, play enough Startup Battle or Training Mode to answer three questions:

  • Do you want to stay close and force exchanges, or control space from farther away?
  • Do you prefer simple, repeatable actions while learning, or are you motivated by precise command inputs?
  • Would you rather cover your main’s weakness with an assist, or add a second character who plays similarly so the team feels consistent?

There is no need to choose a permanent main after one session. A useful main is the character whose basic attacks, movement, and team calls you are willing to repeat until they become automatic.

Match close-range and long-range tools

Sekine’s second major recommendation is: “If you’re unsure how to build a team, try combining close-range and long-range specialists.” His example pairs Wolverine’s aggressive melee with Iron Man’s powerful ranged attacks. Use that pairing as a demonstration of complementary range, not as a proven tournament lineup or mandatory answer.

Why range complementarity helps

A close-range specialist can give you a way to capitalize when an opponent is cornered or leaves an opening. A long-range specialist can create space, make approaches less predictable, or force an opponent to move. Combining the two gives you a different plan when your first approach is not working.

Range is only one axis. Also check:

  • Ease of use: can you perform the character’s basic actions consistently?
  • Assist value: does calling the teammate help your current position, or does it create a timing problem you have not practiced?
  • Switch behavior: can you safely bring the character in when your current fighter needs relief?
  • Opening access: are the characters you most want to use placed in the first two slots?
  • Personal motivation: will you continue practicing the pair after an early loss?

Build the four-character lineup in stages

Do not try to solve every team question at once. Build in layers so you can identify what each addition fixes.

Slot one: your main

Put the character you want to control most in the first slot. Learn movement, basic attacks, defensive responses, and one or two reliable ways to begin an engagement. Your first slot should be a character you can operate without constantly consulting a move list.

Slot two: an answer to your main’s biggest gap

Choose a teammate with a different range or rhythm. If your main wants to fight up close, test a character who can influence space from farther away; if your main prefers distance, test a teammate who can capitalize when an opponent reaches you. Wolverine and Iron Man illustrate this close-plus-long approach, but your own favorites may produce a better fit.

Slots three and four: coverage and comfort

The later slots are unavailable at the opening bell, so use them to add options you will actually remember. A third character can reinforce a range you already understand or supply a different approach for a matchup that gives your first pair trouble. The fourth can be a specialist you enjoy practicing, a backup main, or a character whose assist makes your preferred sequence easier.

Because the official sources do not provide a universal best composition or a current competitive ranking, evaluate these slots through your own matches. Keep a short note after each session: what problem did the team fail to solve, and which teammate could address it without making the opening pair harder to use?

Plan around the two-character opening

The staged unlock system makes your first two slots a strategic decision. PlayStation’s FAQ identifies three events that can unlock the remaining members: a successful stage transition, a wall-bounce, or losing a round. You should therefore practice two versions of your team:

  1. Opening script: a simple plan using only characters one and two. Decide who starts, which assist you call first, and how you respond if the opponent keeps distance or rushes in.
  2. Transition script: a plan for the moment the third or fourth member becomes available. Decide whether you switch immediately, call the new teammate as an assist, or keep your current fighter active.
  3. Recovery script: a plan for a lost round. Since a round loss also unlocks the remaining characters, decide which later member enters first and what you want to test with the expanded team.

This approach prevents a common mistake: selecting two characters you love as late-game specialists while leaving the opening pair unable to handle the first exchange.

Learn assists before rapid switching

The official beginner guide recommends learning assists before trying to rotate rapidly through direct character switches. Calling an assist lets a teammate help while your current character remains in control. The guide also describes a brief on-screen “Switch?” prompt after an assist call, giving you an opportunity to decide whether to bring that teammate in directly.

For the documented controls, press the assist input to call a teammate. Directional inputs combined with L2 switch to team members. Exact button assignments can be customized, so confirm the current layout in the in-game controls menu before drilling a sequence.

A safe assist practice drill

  1. Enter Training Mode with only your opening pair.
  2. Call the second character’s assist while standing at a comfortable distance.
  3. Watch the assist animation and the on-screen “Switch?” prompt instead of immediately pressing additional buttons.
  4. Repeat the same call while moving forward, while defending, and after your main’s basic attack.
  5. Use the L2 directional switch only after you can recognize when the assist has created a useful opening.
  6. Add the third and fourth characters after the first pair feels predictable, then repeat the drill with each teammate.

The goal is not to switch as quickly as possible. It is to know why you are calling help and whether staying with your current character or accepting the switch gives you the better position.

Start with Quick Skills, then learn command inputs

When you are still learning a character, use Quick Skills to reduce the number of execution problems competing for your attention. Once movement, assists, and basic attacks feel familiar, explore command inputs. Sekine’s guide says command inputs can provide slightly higher damage and generate more Skill Gauge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That trade-off gives you a clear progression:

  • Quick Skills: prioritize reliable execution while you learn spacing and team timing.
  • Command inputs: add them one at a time when you can perform the action consistently and understand when its extra damage or Skill Gauge matters.

Do not replace a dependable Quick Skill with a command input merely because it is technically stronger. A move that fails under pressure does not improve your team until you can use it when the situation demands it.

A step-by-step first-week plan

  1. Choose one favorite. Select a hero or villain you are motivated to practice. Check the Ease of Use stars and decide whether the learning curve is realistic for your first sessions.
  2. Run Startup Battle. The official tutorial teaches individual-character basics as well as team-based actions. Complete it before judging whether a character feels awkward.
  3. Test a complementary partner. Try a close-range and long-range combination, using Wolverine and Iron Man only as the developer’s illustration of the idea.
  4. Set the opening order. Place the two characters you can use immediately in slots one and two. Play several rounds without relying on the later members.
  5. Practice assists. Learn the assist input, observe the “Switch?” prompt, and then add directional L2 switches.
  6. Add Quick Skills. Build a small, reliable set of actions before experimenting with command inputs.
  7. Use Training Mode. Rehearse a basic attack, an assist call, a switch, and a response to an opponent who either approaches or retreats.
  8. Unlock and test the full team. Trigger a stage transition or wall-bounce when possible, then evaluate the third and fourth members without abandoning your opening plan.
  9. Review one problem at a time. After a session, write down the first failure you can explain. Change one teammate or one slot, not the entire roster at once.

Use the game’s modes to learn the team

The official Steam listing includes several offline options that support this process:

  • DualSense Wireless Controller Features Built In
  • Replaceable Stick Modules and Caps
  • Training Mode: practice combos, assists, switches, and repeatable situations without match pressure.
  • Episode Mode: learn through a mode built around the game and its teams.
  • Character Guides: review character-specific information while deciding whether a main fits your preferred approach.
  • Local Versus: test your opening pair against another person on the same system.
  • All-Star Arena: continue practicing team choices in an offline setting.

Use Training Mode for precision and the other modes for decision-making. A combo that works in isolation still needs to be called at the right time in a match, especially when only two team members are initially available.

Example team-building decisions

If you want direct, aggressive play

Start with Wolverine if you enjoy his close-range pressure and his Ease of Use recommendation suits you. Add a partner who can influence space from farther away, following Sekine’s close-plus-long principle. Keep the later two slots for characters whose assists or alternative approaches help you continue an attack after the opponent escapes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you prefer to control distance

Try Iron Man, whom Sekine describes as having powerful ranged attacks, or another character whose guide information and testing indicate a comfortable long-range plan. Put a close-range teammate in the second slot so the opening pair is not dependent on staying far away. Test whether you can call that teammate’s assist without losing control of the space you created.

If a favorite character is advanced

Storm and Danger are identified as more advanced, but that is not a reason to avoid them permanently. Use the tutorial and Training Mode to isolate one task at a time. You can keep the advanced favorite as a later team member while learning the opening pair, or make that character your main if the additional practice is part of what motivates you.

Platforms, online requirements, and controllers

The official game page lists PlayStation 5 and PC versions and confirms cross-play. On PS5, online modes require internet access and PlayStation Plus. The game also includes offline and local content, so you can learn a main and test a team without an online subscription.

PS5-compatible arcade sticks and leverless controllers are supported, with customizable button inputs. They are optional. A standard controller is sufficient for choosing a main, learning assists, and building a team. Consider alternate hardware only if its layout makes the inputs more comfortable for you; do not treat it as a prerequisite for command inputs or competitive improvement.

Roster and launch facts to keep in mind

PlayStation’s 2026 information lists 20 playable launch characters. The announced launch date is August 6, 2026, in most regions, with August 7, 2026, in New Zealand, Australia, Japan, and Korea. These are dated launch facts, not a promise that the roster or balance will remain unchanged after updates.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Choosing only by perceived strength

No official source establishes a single best team or a numeric win-rate advantage for one composition. If you select a character solely because someone calls it strong, you may abandon it before learning the fundamentals. Start with interest and Ease of Use, then let your matches identify the real problem.

Putting all four favorites in the late-game slots

Only the first two members are available at the start. Move at least one character you can confidently control into the opening pair, and practice that pair without assuming a stage transition will happen immediately.

Switching before learning assists

Rapid direct switches add timing and decision pressure. Learn to call an assist, observe the “Switch?” prompt, and decide deliberately before chaining switches together.

Learning advanced inputs too early

Command inputs offer the documented benefits of slightly higher damage and more Skill Gauge, but they are not useful if they prevent you from moving, defending, or calling help reliably. Build consistency with Quick Skills first.

Buying specialized hardware before testing your layout

Arcade sticks and leverless controllers are supported, yet optional. Use the controller you already have to determine whether your team and inputs suit you before treating hardware as a solution.

Assuming an example is a tier list

Wolverine plus Iron Man demonstrates range complementarity. It is not presented by the developer as the universally optimal or tournament-winning team. Your final lineup should reflect the characters you will practice and the problems your own matches reveal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to know when your team is ready

A first team is ready for regular matches when you can answer these questions without guessing:

  • Which character starts, and what is your simplest opening action?
  • Which teammate do you call as an assist when you need help approaching or escaping?
  • What does the “Switch?” prompt mean for your current plan?
  • Which two characters are available before a stage transition, wall-bounce, or round loss?
  • What will you do when the third or fourth member unlocks?
  • Which action will you practice next: a movement response, an assist timing, a switch, or a command input?

If you can answer those questions, stop changing the entire roster after every loss. Keep the team long enough to learn its patterns, then make a single change when you can name the problem that change is meant to solve.
