Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls supports two straightforward ways to play with friends: choose Local Versus when you are sharing one PS5 or PC, or use a Room Match (the game’s private-room option) when you are playing over the internet. A Room Match also contains a dedicated training cabinet so two friends can practice together online. PS5 and PC cross-play is supported.
Local Versus is offline and does not need PlayStation Plus. Online play needs an internet connection and a platform account; PS5 online play additionally requires PlayStation Plus, while PC online features require a PlayStation account. Each actual match has two opposing players, with each player controlling a four-character team—not four-player cooperative campaign play and not a 64-player battle.

Choose the right multiplayer route
| Route | Best for | What it requires | What happens in play |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local Versus | Two people using the same system | Offline; no internet connection or PlayStation Plus for the offline match | Two people face each other on one PS5 or PC |
| Room Match | A private online match with a friend | Internet and the relevant platform account; PS5 also requires PlayStation Plus | Friends meet in a private online room and play a normal versus match |
| Room Match training cabinet | Practicing together online | The same online requirements as a Room Match | Both players use the cabinet dedicated to online training |
| Ranked or Casual Match | Playing online outside a private friend room | Internet and the relevant platform account; PS5 also requires PlayStation Plus | You enter the game’s public online matchmaking rather than a private friend session |
The table separates where the players are and why they are playing. If you are sitting beside someone, Local Versus avoids account and subscription requirements. If you are in different homes, Room Match is the private route. If the goal is drills rather than a full contest, use the training cabinet inside that room.

Use Local Versus for couch play
Local Versus is the game’s offline option for two people sharing a system. It is the appropriate choice for a couch session, a tournament setup without internet access, or any situation in which you do not want to create an online room.
#1 Best Overall
- Assemble your team of legendary Marvel characters in the ultimate 4v4 tag team fighter from PlayStation Studios, Arc System Works and Marvel Games.
- Experiment with team compositions to discover new combos, synergies, and strategies. Blast your way through dynamic stages based on iconic Marvel Universe locales, some featuring interactive stage transitions.
- Fighting is both immersive and intuitive, with a range of unique move sets, combos, and strategies to master. Adjustable controls, both traditional and quick inputs, plus easy chain combos make diving right in a breeze.
- Face off against a friend locally or join the fray with up to 64 players in the online lobby, including standard VS modes. Plus, dive deep on each team with the single player Episode Mode to learn more about team dynamics and lore.
- Start the game on the shared PS5 or PC.
- Choose the Local Versus option from the offline play choices.
- Have each person take a controller and select a side when the versus setup appears.
- Choose the teams and match settings presented by the game, then begin the match.
No PlayStation Plus subscription is needed for this offline route, and an internet connection is not required. The offline qualification matters: the subscription and connection requirements apply to online features, not to Local Versus.
What local play does—and does not—mean
Local Versus is a head-to-head match on one device. It is not a cooperative story campaign. Official game information describes every match as having two opposing players, with each player controlling a team of four characters. The four-character team is a gameplay roster for one player; it does not mean four people can join the same side.
How to play an online private match with a friend
Use Room Match or private room play
For a friend who is playing from another location, use Room Match. The official FAQ also refers to these as private rooms. One friend creates a room and the other joins that friend’s room. This keeps the session separate from public Ranked and Casual matchmaking.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe support material confirms the Room Match route but does not publish a complete, button-by-button menu map for ordinary versus-room creation. Therefore, use the Room Match option shown in the game’s online play interface rather than relying on an assumed button prompt or menu name that may change between versions.
Online prerequisites
Online room play needs an internet connection and the account required by the platform. On PS5, online play also requires an active PlayStation Plus subscription. On PC, the online features require a PlayStation account as well as an internet connection. These requirements apply before either player can create, join, or play in the room.
Creating and joining the session
- Both players connect their systems to the internet and sign in to the required platform accounts.
- One player selects Room Match and creates a private room.
- The other player uses Room Match to join that friend’s room.
- Once both players are together, start the versus match using the room’s available match option.
The exact labels and button prompts for the final match launch are not documented in the official FAQ, so the safe instruction is to follow the controls displayed by the current game build instead of using an unverified menu path.
How to train with a friend online
Use the dedicated training cabinet
Online practice is built into Room Match. After one player creates a room and the other joins, both players go to the cabinet dedicated to online training. The official support wording is:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“To train with friends online, create or join a friend’s Room Match and head to the cabinet that is dedicated for online training.”
Both players interact with the kiosk to access training together. This is different from practicing alone in a normal training mode: the cabinet is specifically the shared online-training entry point inside the private room.
- Create or join the friend’s Room Match.
- Locate the cabinet marked for online training.
- Have both players interact with the kiosk.
- Use the resulting training session to work on inputs, spacing, team sequences, or matchup situations before returning to a versus match.
If the cabinet does not open the shared session, first confirm that both players are in the same Room Match. The official instructions require both players to interact with the kiosk; entering a solo training mode elsewhere will not satisfy that step.
PS5-to-PC cross-play
Official PlayStation product information confirms cross-play between PS5 and PC. A PS5 player can therefore meet a friend using the PC version, provided both players can access the online service requirements for their own platform.

The PC version is listed for Steam and Epic. Steam’s feature list includes online player-versus-player, shared or split-screen player-versus-player, shared or split-screen play, and cross-platform multiplayer. The PC online requirement is a PlayStation account and an internet connection; the PS5 player’s online requirement additionally includes PlayStation Plus.
Cross-play does not turn a match into a larger free-for-all. It only allows supported PS5 and PC players to connect. The match format remains two opposing players, each controlling a four-character team.
Understanding the 64-player lobby number
The PlayStation listing describes an online lobby with capacity for up to 64 players. That number refers to the lobby space, not the number of people fighting simultaneously.
In an actual match, there are two opposing players. Each player controls a four-character team. Other people may be present in the broader lobby environment, waiting, observing the room’s activity, or preparing for their own match, but the official match description does not support a 64-player battle or a four-person cooperative team.
Keeping those figures separate prevents a common misunderstanding: 64 is the maximum stated lobby capacity, while 2 is the number of opposing players in one match and 4 is the character count for each player’s team.
Ranked and Casual online matches
When to use Ranked
Ranked Match is the public-competition route for players who want an online match outside a private friend room. It uses the game’s online service rather than the offline Local Versus mode. The supplied official information confirms Ranked as an online mode but does not specify its rating rules, matchmaking algorithm, or menu sequence, so those details should not be inferred.
When to use Casual
Casual Match is the other named public online route. Choose it when you want online play without using a private Room Match. As with Ranked, the available evidence establishes the mode and its online nature, not a specific lobby filter, rematch rule, or matchmaking setting.
For a guaranteed session with a particular friend, Room Match is the documented choice. Ranked and Casual are better understood as public alternatives rather than substitutes for a private invitation workflow.
Requirements by platform
| Platform | Local Versus | Online features | Cross-play position |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 | Offline play; no PS Plus or internet required for Local Versus | Internet connection and PlayStation Plus | Can play with supported PC players |
| PC (Steam or Epic) | Shared or split-screen play is listed among the PC features | Internet connection and a PlayStation account | Can play with supported PS5 players |
These are service prerequisites, not performance guarantees. A valid subscription or account cannot compensate for a disconnected network, and cross-play support does not remove the account requirement on PC.
Region lobbies and finding the right room
The official FAQ says players may choose another region’s lobby if their preferred lobby is not full. This gives you a documented fallback when a regional lobby has reached capacity.
- Try the lobby region you normally use.
- If it is full, select another available region as permitted by the game’s lobby screen.
- Have both friends use the same room and region choices so they are looking in the same place.
Changing region is a capacity option, not a promise of identical network conditions. The official material does not publish latency figures or a recommended region order, so choose an available region shown by the game and evaluate the connection during play.

What “four-character team” means
Team construction is part of each player’s side. One player selects a four-character team, and the opponent selects another four-character team. The two teams then face each other in the match structure described by the official FAQ.
- There are two human-controlled sides in a match.
- Each side is represented by four selected characters.
- The format is competitive versus play, not a four-person co-op campaign.
- A 64-person lobby does not change the two-player match structure.
This distinction is especially important when arranging a group session. Four friends cannot all enter the same match as four allied players based on the documented format. They can instead rotate through matches or use the larger lobby to gather before taking turns.
Controller and hardware notes
Arcade sticks and leverless controllers are optional. The official FAQ says that any PS5-compatible arcade stick or leverless controller can be used. PC players are directed to check compatibility with their own hardware.
No particular controller model is required by the documented multiplayer instructions. If you are planning a local session, confirm that each player has a functioning input device before entering Local Versus. For an online session, test the controller on the platform before creating the room so that setup problems are not confused with connection or account problems.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Local Versus will not require an online connection
Local Versus is specifically an offline mode. If you are being asked for online credentials or a subscription, you may have entered an online mode instead. Return to the offline Local Versus choice rather than Room Match, Ranked, or Casual.
Recommended Free Tools
A PS5 friend cannot start online play
Check the two documented PS5 prerequisites: an internet connection and PlayStation Plus. Both are required for PS5 online play. Local Versus remains available without them if you are together on one system.
A PC friend cannot access online features
Confirm an internet connection and a signed-in PlayStation account. The PC listing covers Steam and Epic, but the PlayStation account requirement still applies to the online features.
The friends cannot meet in the lobby
Verify that both players are using Room Match for a private session rather than looking for each other in unrelated public matchmaking. If the selected regional lobby is full, use another region that the game makes available, then have both players look there.
Online training does not start
Both players must be inside the same friend’s Room Match and both must interact with the cabinet dedicated to online training. The official instruction does not describe a separate invitation command or an alternate training menu.

MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is listed for PS5 and PC, with the PC release available through Steam and Epic. Official pages give an August 6, 2026 launch time in UTC; regional launch listings show August 7 in New Zealand, Australia, Japan, and Korea. Those dates describe the release schedule, while access to online services can still depend on the platform account and subscription conditions listed above.
The official support FAQ also confirms that a physical PS5 Standard Edition exists. That is a format detail rather than a different multiplayer ruleset: the local, Room Match, training, Ranked, and Casual options are determined by the game and platform service you are using.
Fast decision guide
- Same room, one system: choose Local Versus. It is offline and does not need PS Plus.
- Different locations, private fight: create or join a Room Match.
- Different locations, practice session: enter the Room Match training cabinet and have both players use the kiosk.
- PS5 and PC together: use supported cross-play, with each platform meeting its own online requirements.
- Public online opponents: choose Ranked or Casual instead of a private room.
- Lobby confusion: remember that up to 64 players refers to the lobby; one match still has two opposing players with four-character teams.
The Bottom Line
Use Local Versus for offline couch play, Room Match for a private online friend session, and the Room Match training cabinet for shared practice. PS5 and PC can cross-play, but PS5 online play requires PlayStation Plus while PC online play requires a PlayStation account and internet access.
