Captain America, Ms. Marvel, and Wolverine are the official beginner-friendly starting points. Iron Man and Spider-Man are also relatively accessible, while Storm and Danger demand more advanced execution. The “best” choice depends on the range, movement and resource system you enjoy, because Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a four-character tag fighter in which team coverage matters more than a universal tier label.
This comparison covers all 20 launch-playable fighters on PS5 and PC, their documented strengths, and the tactical constraints that create risk. It does not assign tiers: the official material provides character profiles, not win rates, matchup charts or tournament results.

What the launch roster and team system look like
The official FAQ lists 20 launch-playable fighters: Captain America, Iron Man, Black Panther, Hulk, Storm, Magik, Wolverine, Danger, Spider-Man, Ms. Marvel, Star-Lord, Peni Parker, Ghost Rider, Blade, Deadpool, Loki, Doctor Doom, Magneto, Green Goblin and Carnage. Champion appears on the character-guide page as a story character, but is not included in the FAQ’s 20-character playable launch list. Verify the current roster in the official FAQ if a later update changes it.
Marvel Tōkon is a 4v4 tag-team fighter. You choose four heroes, but the match starts with the first two selected members available. The remaining teammates become available after a successful stage transition or wall-bounce, or when you lose a round. That rule makes a team’s order and comeback plan important: a character who is excellent after an assist or tag may not be your ideal opening pick.

PlayStation lists PS5 and PC versions, cross-play, and a launch date of August 6, 2026. Local launch dates are August 7 in New Zealand, Australia, Japan and Korea. The Year 1 Character and Stage Pass includes four characters and one post-launch stage; Phoenix Cyclops is scheduled for November 2, 2026, according to the linked news information. A scheduled date is not proof that the character is already available, so check the current game page before treating that content as released: PlayStation game page.
How to interpret strengths and weaknesses
The official profiles distinguish preferred range, approach tools, distinctive mechanics and ease of use. In the table below, a “weakness” means a documented constraint or tactical risk—such as a resource overload, limited movement option or punishable animation—not that the character is intrinsically bad. Balance patches can change frame data and practical matchups.
No official performance source currently supplies a win-rate figure, pick rate, tournament-placement table or matchup chart for these fighters. Consequently, the comparisons below describe how each kit is intended to work rather than claiming that one hero beats another.

At-a-glance comparison of all 20 launch fighters
| Fighter | Primary range and approach | Signature mechanic | Strength to exploit | Documented constraint or risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Captain America | Flexible close-to-mid range | Shield trajectories, lunges and anti-air options | All-round fundamentals and adaptable spacing | Jack-of-all-trades value depends on choosing the right option rather than overwhelming one range |
| Iron Man | Mid-range zoning into approach | Projectile checks and mid-air options | Controls space before moving in; pairs with a close-range teammate | Wants a partner to cover opponents who get inside his preferred distance |
| Black Panther | Agile offense after ranged setup | Bast’s Blessing Gauge charged by spear attacks and projectiles | Gauge-powered follow-ups turn successful pokes into pressure | Must spend time and actions building the gauge before the strongest sequences |
| Hulk | Close-range big-body offense | Gamma Icon enables Gamma Rage | Long-reaching attacks and offense that can push through attacks | Cannot air dash, so opponents can challenge his aerial approach and repositioning |
| Storm | Technical wind and projectile control | Tempest options, projectile control and Whirlwind lunges | Can alter the pace of a screen and create unusual approach angles | The developer guide rates her playstyle advanced, increasing execution and decision load |
| Magik | Close range with teleport setups | Soulsword, Limbo magic and Dark Portal | Can attack from multiple directions by teleporting herself or projectiles | Teleport choices are powerful but become predictable if used without conditioning |
| Wolverine | Fast rushdown and mix-ups | Berserker Rage | Speed and close pressure; officially beginner-friendly | Needs to stay close to convert his advantage, so backing off can reset his game plan |
| Danger | Flexible, technical ground-to-air offense | Calibrate combines with other Skills; grounded dash launches aerial attacks | Can tailor sequences to position and condition an opponent | The beginner guide labels her advanced, and her options require deliberate setup |
| Spider-Man | Highly mobile approach, pressure and zoning | Directional Web Zip follow-ups | Grounded and aerial web routes create varied entries | Web Shot has a long animation and can be punished if an opponent anticipates it and jumps in |
| Ms. Marvel | Extended-range limbs into close mix-ups | Elasti-Grab, Rubber Bind and Karate Chop choices | Can threaten from outside normal reach, then force close decisions | No aerial dash is listed in her profile, limiting some air movement routes |
| Star-Lord | Projectile gunslinger with mobile approaches | Element Blast changes with equipped element | Multiple elements, lunges and movement options let him adapt | Effectiveness depends on selecting the element and approach that fit the situation |
| Peni Parker | Mid-range control through drone coordination | SP//dr and randomly summoned drones with different effects | Can build varied tactics by adapting to each drone outcome | Random outcomes make a fixed, rehearsed plan less reliable |
| Ghost Rider | Long-range chain control | Vengeance Gauge increases Skill damage | High gauge rewards sustained control and successful hits | Exceeding the gauge limit leaves him wide open; overload also has long recovery |
| Blade | Broad toolkit at any range | Limited-use Heart Stopper approach attack replenished by Up the Stakes | Can threaten while advancing from range and still fight up close | Heart Stopper charges are finite until replenished, so careless use removes a key approach tool |
| Deadpool | Tools for any range | Healing Gauge changes Skill versions; Meat Shield can generate gauge | Resource decisions let him trade offense for recovery options | Gauge spending is a choice, not guaranteed survivability; the profile gives no numerical durability advantage |
| Loki | Technical deception and movement control | Magic feints, counters, lunges, projectiles and Norn Stone | Can force awkward movement and punish predictable responses | Requires reading the opponent; ineffective feints give the opponent a turn |
| Doctor Doom | Mid-to-far zoning with teleport mobility | Projectiles, Nullify Shield and teleporting dash/backdash | Can contest distance while crossing over an opponent unexpectedly | Teleport movement is a commitment that can be anticipated and intercepted |
| Magneto | Technical battlefield setup | Projectiles create debris; magnetism collects or draws opponents with it | Turns the stage and generated debris into offensive resources | His strongest loop depends on maintaining access to debris and positioning |
| Green Goblin | Aerial mobility and hit-and-run attacks | Glider movement and Glider Gauge | Free aerial movement and unique glider attacks | When the gauge empties, he loses that mobility layer and relies on Razor Bats and Pumpkin Bombs to disrupt |
| Carnage | Long-reaching, status-enabled offense | Necrosis powers attacks; Parasite Fang creates openings | Can reform his body to strike from afar and convert status pressure | Needs a clean opening to make the status-and-range plan pay off |
These summaries come from the official character and combat guide; they are not frame-data measurements.
Fighter-by-fighter practical notes
Captain America
Choose Captain America when you want one character to teach core spacing, anti-air timing and projectile awareness. His shield trajectories and lunges let you test several approaches without committing to a narrow specialist.
Iron Man
Iron Man rewards players who like to make the opponent move first. Use projectiles to check a lane, then advance behind the opening; a close-range teammate gives him a safer answer when an enemy gets through.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteHulk
Hulk’s size gives attacks practical reach and lets his offense push through some opposing attacks. Treat his missing air dash as a route-planning issue: approach from the ground, use teammates for coverage and do not assume every aerial escape is available.
Storm
Storm is for players who enjoy managing several screen-control choices at once. Tempest and projectile control can dictate where a fight happens, while Whirlwind supplies a more direct lunge; the number of decisions is why the guide calls her advanced.
Magik
Magik can make the opponent block in the wrong direction with Dark Portal. Teleporting a projectile is different from teleporting herself, so vary the two options rather than repeating a recognizable entry.
Wolverine
Wolverine is the clearest “get in and stay in” option. Berserker Rage supports his rushdown identity, and the official beginner rating means a new player can learn his pressure without first mastering a complicated setup system.

Spider-Man
Spider-Man’s Web Zip is valuable because its direction and follow-ups vary. The hands-on report describes both grounded and aerial routes, but specifically cautions that a long Web Shot animation can be punished by a prepared jump-in; use it when the opponent is committed elsewhere.
Ms. Marvel
Ms. Marvel can start a threat from farther away than many close fighters, then use Elasti-Grab to force a close interaction. Rubber Bind and Karate Chop give the opponent different defensive questions, while the lack of a listed aerial dash makes ground control especially important.
Star-Lord
Star-Lord is a good fit if you want a projectile character without staying stationary. Element Blast changes with the equipped element, so learn what each element is meant to accomplish before choosing it in the middle of pressure.
Peni Parker
Peni Parker asks you to improvise around SP//dr and the drones that appear. Rather than memorizing one guaranteed route, identify what the current drone effect enables and adjust your spacing, assist timing and attack choice.
Ghost Rider
Ghost Rider’s chains make him naturally comfortable at long range. The Vengeance Gauge is both his reward and his trap: rising gauge increases Skill damage, but crossing its limit leaves him exposed with a long recovery, so stop building before the payoff becomes a liability.
Blade
Blade has answers at every distance, but Heart Stopper is not an unlimited approach button. Track its remaining uses and replenish them with Up the Stakes before committing to a sequence that depends on another charge.

Deadpool
Deadpool turns incoming action into a Healing Gauge and can generate more with Meat Shield. Decide whether a gauge-powered Skill version creates immediate momentum or whether saving the resource is more valuable; the official profile does not promise a fixed survivability bonus.
Recommended Free Tools
Loki
Loki’s Magic options are strongest when they make the opponent hesitate. Norn Stone can restrict movement while feints, counters, lunges and projectiles punish the response, but the plan fails if you use the same deception repeatedly.
Doctor Doom
Doctor Doom combines conventional mid-to-far projectiles with Nullify Shield and a teleporting dash or backdash. Use the teleport to change sides or escape a predictable line, not as an automatic defensive button that the opponent can wait for.
Magneto
Magneto’s battlefield loop begins with projectiles that create debris. Magnetism can collect that debris or pull an opponent toward it, so his advantage grows when you deliberately fight near the resources you generated.
Green Goblin
Green Goblin’s glider enables free aerial movement and attacks unavailable to grounded fighters. Watch the Glider Gauge: once it is empty, switch expectations and use Razor Bats or Pumpkin Bombs to disrupt while the mobility resource is unavailable.

Carnage can reform his body to reach from afar, then use Necrosis-powered attacks and Parasite Fang to create an opening. His plan is most reliable after you have established that the opponent must respect the long-range threat.

Which character should a newcomer start with?
Game Director and Lead Battle Designer Kazuto Sekine advises checking each fighter’s Ease of Use rating: more stars mean a gentler learning curve. The official beginner guide identifies Captain America, Ms. Marvel and Wolverine as beginner-friendly; it describes Iron Man and Spider-Man as relatively easy, and Storm and Danger as advanced. Those ratings measure accessibility, not competitive strength.
For the most direct fundamentals lesson, start with Captain America. Pick Ms. Marvel if extended reach and close mix-ups sound appealing, or Wolverine if you want immediate rushdown. Iron Man is a sensible choice for learning projectile spacing, while Spider-Man suits a newcomer willing to practice movement routes. Sekine’s broader advice is to start with the hero you like most and expand gradually; a character you understand can be relied on throughout a match.
Controls can be simplified through Quick Skills, which assign a Skill to one button. Motion Command Inputs require more execution but provide slightly higher damage and generate more Skill Gauge, giving you a reason to transition after learning the basic version. The input options are documented in the character guide.
How to build a four-character team
Cover complementary ranges
The official beginner guide recommends combining close- and long-range specialists and uses Wolverine plus Iron Man as its example. The same principle applies beyond that pair: a rushdown member can capitalize on the space a zoner controls, while a long-range member gives the team a plan when a close fighter cannot safely enter.
Plan around resources
Do not stack four characters whose strongest turns all require the same preparation window. Black Panther needs gauge building, Ghost Rider must avoid Vengeance overload, Blade has limited Heart Stopper uses, and Green Goblin’s aerial freedom depends on the Glider Gauge. Pairing resource-heavy characters with a straightforward opener can make the team easier to operate.
Choose an order that matches your comfort
Because only the first two selected fighters are available at the start, put your reliable opener first and your preferred follow-up second. The remaining two unlock after the specified stage transition or a lost round, so a comeback character may be more useful in slot three or four than as your initial pick.
Use practice mode to test roles
Practice each intended pair against a stationary opponent, then against recorded movement. Check whether the second character can capitalize on a wall-bounce, whether a projectile covers the tag-in and whether your resource is available when the partner enters. These tests are more informative than assuming a matchup advantage from a character description.
What is known—and not known—about balance
The available official pages do not publish laboratory frame data, player-tested tier lists, win rates, pick rates or tournament placements. They also do not establish that one fighter is universally stronger than another. Patch changes can alter the value of movement, damage and resource limits, so consult current in-game practice data and patch notes before making a matchup or ranking claim.
PS5-compatible arcade sticks and leverless controllers are supported according to the official game information. That confirms compatibility, not the quality of any particular model; choose a controller based on comfort, layout and the input method you intend to practice.
