MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a 4v4 tag-team fighter in which each player has a four-character team, but only the first two characters are available when a match begins. You unlock the third and fourth members during play by causing a stage transition or wall bounce with specific moves, combos or a throw near the edge of an area, or by losing a round. That progressive assembly is the key to understanding how teams work.

The launch roster contains 20 playable characters. Official announcements confirm the Fighting Avengers and Knights of Doom as themed groups, while Phoenix Cyclops is scheduled as Year 1 Pass DLC for November 2, 2026 and is not part of the 20-character launch roster.

What MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is

MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a tag-team fighting game from Arc System Works for PlayStation 5 and PC. Two players face each other, and each player controls a team of four Marvel characters. The important qualification is that a four-character team does not mean all four fighters are available from the opening second of a round. PlayStation’s official FAQ describes a staged system: both players begin with their first two characters, then assemble the third and fourth after specific in-match events.

This design changes how “team building” should be understood. You are not simply selecting four fighters and immediately cycling through a complete roster. You are planning which characters you want available first, how you will create opportunities to unlock later members, and how a round loss changes the resources available to you. The game is therefore a 4v4 format with progressive team assembly.

Game Director and Lead Battle Designer Kazuto Sekine said the format was intended to produce “over-the-top moments” while evolving the tag-fighting genre. His explanation describes the developer’s design goal, not a claim that every player will find the game easy or that one particular team is strongest.

How the four-character team becomes available

1. Start with two characters

At the beginning of a match, each player has access to the first two characters assigned to their team. The third and fourth characters are not assumed to be active or selectable immediately. This opening state makes your first choices especially important: the early part of a match is played with a smaller available pool than the final team size suggests.

2. Trigger a stage transition or wall bounce

The official FAQ says a successful stage transition or wall-bounce can provide access to the next team members. These events are triggered by specific moves, combos or a throw near an area’s edge. In practical terms, positioning near the edge is not merely visual scenery; it can create a route to expanding your available team.

The exact move, combo or throw needed depends on the situation and the game’s move rules. Treat the edge as a strategic objective: look for opportunities to carry an opponent toward it, recognize when your current attack can produce a transition or bounce, and avoid assuming that any hit anywhere will unlock a character.

3. Losing a round can also unlock members

A round loss is another listed route to the third and fourth characters. This gives a player who falls behind a way to assemble more of the team rather than ending the entire match with only the opening pair. It does not make losing desirable, but it means a round result can alter the next phase of team access.

4. Think of team access as a match flow

A useful mental model is:

  1. Choose and begin with two characters.
  2. Fight for position and look for a move, combo or edge throw that causes a wall bounce or stage transition.
  3. Use the resulting access to bring the third or fourth member into your plans.
  4. If you lose a round, reassess the team members now available and the next round’s opening priorities.

Because PlayStation’s official FAQ describes the unlock conditions but does not publish a complete matchup or timing chart, do not assume that one named character always appears first, that every transition unlocks both remaining members at once, or that a particular sequence is competitively optimal. Confirm the in-game Character Guides for the move-specific details.

Launch roster, post-launch characters and what is confirmed

PlayStation’s current FAQ lists 20 playable characters at launch. That is a count for the base game, not a promise that the roster will remain fixed. The launch announcement also describes a Year 1 Characters & Stage Pass containing four additional playable characters and one new playable stage. Pass contents, schedules and availability can change, so check the current PlayStation listing before purchasing.

Launch roster 20 playable characters, according to the official FAQ accessed October 13, 2026. No complete official character-by-character table was published.
Year 1 Characters & Stage Pass Four additional playable characters and one new playable stage are announced. Separate pass content from the 20-character base roster and verify current edition or pass availability.
Phoenix Cyclops Announced as the first Year 1 Pass DLC character, scheduled for November 2, 2026. As of October 13, 2026, treat him as upcoming DLC, not as one of the 20 launch characters.

The launch date was August 6, 2026 on PS5 and PC in most regions. New Zealand, Australia, Japan and Korea received the game on August 7. Those dates matter when comparing launch-roster information with later DLC announcements.

Officially announced team examples

Two themed groups have been identified in PlayStation producer announcements. They are useful examples of how Marvel identities can be grouped, but the announcements do not establish a complete roster or a definitive list of every team combination available in the game.

Team name Characters named in the announcement Important qualification
Fighting Avengers Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk and Black Panther In this game’s story, Black Panther is Shuri, who recently inherited the mantle.
Knights of Doom Doctor Doom, Magneto, Green Goblin and Carnage This is a confirmed example, not an exhaustive statement about all team options.

The Fighting Avengers announcement is available from PlayStation at https://blog.playstation.com/2026/05/02/hulk-and-black-panther-join-the-fight-for-marvel-tokon-fighting-souls. The Knights of Doom announcement is at https://blog.playstation.com/?p=419036. Use these names as confirmed examples rather than inferring that a themed group is automatically the strongest competitive team.

How to choose characters without a full tier list

No official source here establishes a matchup chart, tier list or objectively best four-character team. A sensible first team should instead be built around observable characteristics and your own input preferences.

Start with a main character

Compare candidates by range, attack style, movement and role. A character who can control space from farther away asks for different decisions than one who must stay close. A character whose attacks emphasize direct pressure differs from one whose value comes from mobility, defensive control or setting up an approach. These are decision axes, not claims that a particular launch character fills a specific role unless the in-game guide says so.

Add a complementary second character

Since every match begins with two available characters, select an opening pair whose strengths do not leave you with only one way to attack. You might prefer a familiar character alongside one with a different range or movement pattern, allowing you to change your approach when the opponent can consistently stop the first plan.

Plan the later unlocks

Think about which characters you want to gain after a wall bounce, transition or round loss. If you are comfortable with one main, later members can cover a problem matchup or offer a different pace. If you are still learning, a later character with similar inputs may reduce the amount of new technique you must absorb.

Choose by input comfort

Sekine said the team system was designed so players could focus on one character if they prefer: “Generally, a team VS fighting game requires the player to learn multiple characters, but for MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, you only need to master one character in order to play the game. We have designed the mechanics in such a way that you can perform a variety of actions with either traditional fighting game inputs or simple inputs.” This is the developer’s stated intent, not independent proof that the game is easy or that one-character mastery is always optimal.

Use Training Mode and Character Guides to decide whether traditional or simple inputs feel natural. Mastering one reliable character first can give you a stable starting point while you learn when the remaining team members become available.

Modes, platforms and online requirements

The game includes both offline and online options. The official FAQ identifies an original Episode mode, local Versus, Training Mode, All-Star Arena, Character Guides and other offline content. These options let you practice or play without entering an online match.

Activity Connection and account requirement
Original Episode mode, local Versus, Training Mode, All-Star Arena, Character Guides and offline content Designed for offline play; the FAQ lists these among the game’s offline options.
Ranked and Casual matches Require an online connection and PlayStation Account. On PS5, online modes require internet access and PlayStation Plus.
Room Matches and Online Lobby Require an online connection and PlayStation Account; PS5 participation also requires PlayStation Plus.
PC online play Requires linking a PlayStation Account.
Cross-play PS5 and PC cross-play is supported, according to PlayStation’s FAQ.

Regional service terms can differ, so verify the current account and subscription requirements for your location. The presence of offline modes means you can learn the roster and team-access flow without a subscription, while online matchmaking has the additional platform requirements listed above.

Controllers and input setup

PlayStation says any PS5-compatible arcade stick or leverless controller can be used, and button inputs can be customized. A dedicated fight stick is therefore an optional choice, not a stated requirement. A standard gamepad is a reasonable starting point, particularly while you are learning which attacks create wall bounces or stage transitions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before entering a match, customize buttons only after you understand the default layout. Then test the arrangement in Training Mode and make sure your most-used normal attacks, assists or tag commands—where applicable in the game’s own terminology—are reachable without accidental presses. The official information confirms input customization but does not prescribe a competitive layout.

A practical first-session plan

  1. Open Character Guides. Read the game’s own descriptions and note each candidate’s range, movement and attack style.
  2. Practice one main in Training Mode. Learn basic movement, a dependable attack sequence and the conditions that can produce a wall bounce or transition.
  3. Pick an opening pair. Use two characters you can control consistently rather than selecting four unfamiliar characters at once.
  4. Test edge positioning. Practice moving an opponent toward an area edge and identify which listed moves, combos or throws can trigger the team-access event.
  5. Play local Versus or a low-pressure match. Concentrate on recognizing when the third or fourth character becomes available, not on proving a tier-list theory.
  6. Review after a round loss. Note which additional member became available and whether your next opening plan should change.
  7. Expand gradually. Add a third and fourth character only after the first two no longer prevent you from learning the match flow.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Assuming all four characters are available immediately: Begin with the first two and deliberately look for the documented unlock events.
  • Treating any corner hit as an automatic unlock: The FAQ refers to specific moves, combos or a throw near an area’s edge. Check the Character Guides for the required action.
  • Calling Phoenix Cyclops a launch character: As of October 13, 2026, he is announced DLC scheduled for November 2, not part of the 20-character base roster.
  • Assuming a themed team is automatically optimal: Fighting Avengers and Knights of Doom are confirmed examples, not official competitive rankings.
  • Learning four complete move sets before playing: The director says the game is designed so one-character mastery can be a viable focus. Start with one main and add complexity when the match demands it.
  • Buying specialized hardware unnecessarily: PS5-compatible arcade sticks and leverless controllers work, but PlayStation does not say they are required.
  • Confusing offline and online access: Training and listed offline modes do not have the same requirements as Ranked, Casual, Room Matches or Online Lobby. Check account, internet and PlayStation Plus needs before troubleshooting matchmaking.
