The fastest way to learn MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is to complete Startup Battle with Captain America, choose a hero whose style you actually enjoy, and practice one short Link Attack plus one defensive option. The game uses four-character teams, but only your first two selected characters are available at the start of a match; the others join after a Break or a lost round. That structure makes a focused first session more useful than trying to memorize the entire roster.

This guide follows the official beginner guidance from Arc System Works and the current game FAQ. The beginner guide was published July 20, 2026, before the open beta, while the FAQ describes the released game’s offline and online features. The PlayStation Store lists the PS5 version with a published August 6, 2026 release date; the launch announcement lists August 7 for Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and Korea. Store availability can vary by territory.

How do I start playing Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls?

Use this order for your first sitting:

  1. At character select, use the Ease of Use stars to identify approachable choices, then pick the hero you are most motivated to learn.
  2. Choose a four-character team with a simple contrast, such as a close-range fighter and a ranged fighter.
  3. Open Startup Battle. New players should complete both Basics and Assemble; experienced fighting-game players can begin with Assemble.
  4. In a match, repeat one short Link Attack, then spend a few minutes practicing Guard, Assemble Counter, and Crossover.
  5. Move to Training Mode and set one measurable goal, such as landing the same Link Attack five times or stopping one recorded attack.

This route teaches the game’s individual-character controls before adding team decisions, so the on-screen action remains understandable.

The game’s official beginner guide is written by Kazuto Sekine, Game Director and Lead Battle Designer at Arc System Works. It recommends starting with a favorite hero and expanding gradually rather than attempting to master the full launch roster immediately. Read the complete guide at PlayStation.Blog.

Which character should I pick first?

Character select shows Ease of Use stars: more stars indicate a character that is easier to use, according to the official guide. Treat the rating as a starting point, not a ranking of strength. A character you like enough to practice is usually a better first choice than a theoretically simple character you do not want to play.

Character What the official guidance says Useful first-session reason
Captain America Recommended beginner example He is the character used to teach the core mechanics in Startup Battle.
Ms. Marvel Recommended beginner example A suggested starting point when you want a hero other than Captain America.
Wolverine Recommended beginner example Represents an aggressive, close-range style.
Iron Man Relatively easy to learn Provides a straightforward ranged contrast to a melee teammate.
Spider-Man Relatively easy to learn Another accessible option if his movement and character fantasy appeal to you.
Storm Presented as more advanced Better saved for after you understand the basic controls and team flow.
Danger Presented as more advanced Consider learning her after you have a reliable first character.

The guide’s practical advice is to begin with the hero you like most and gradually expand your roster. You can rely on a learned character throughout a match, so you do not need to switch constantly while learning.

Build a first team by contrasting roles

There is no source-backed objectively best beginner team. Instead, make the first team easy to understand by contrasting ranges. The official guide uses Wolverine’s aggressive melee style paired with Iron Man’s powerful ranged attacks as an example. That pairing is an illustration of role contrast, not a tier recommendation.

  • Close-range lead: choose a character you can move forward with and attack at nearby distance.
  • Ranged partner: choose a character whose attacks let you contest space from farther away.
  • Familiarity over theory: fill the other two slots with heroes you want to try, but avoid changing every character between matches until you know what each one does.

The FAQ lists 20 launch characters. That is a roster count, not a claim that one combination is strongest.

What are the basic controls?

Learn individual actions in Basics

Startup Battle’s Basics section teaches actions for one character while you play as Captain America. The attack buttons are:

Input Action
□ Light attack
△ Medium attack
○ Heavy attack

Basics also introduces combos, Skills, and character-specific actions. Take the section at your own pace; the purpose is to recognize what each button does before adding a teammate.

Add team actions in Assemble

Assemble introduces team mechanics and cooperative actions. A player familiar with traditional fighting games can skip Basics and go directly to Assemble, but a newcomer should complete both sections in sequence. The game’s team system is not an optional advanced layer: it determines when additional members enter a match and gives you offensive and defensive actions that use the team.

How do the teams work during a match?

You select four characters, but the FAQ says only the first two selected characters are available when the match begins. The remaining members are assembled after a Break or after you lose a round. If the last two portraits appear unavailable at the start, that is the intended match flow rather than a missing selection.

What causes a Break?

The FAQ identifies several Break triggers:

  • Certain attacks or throws.
  • Selected Skill attacks.
  • A successful light-route Link Attack near the edge of the screen.

A Break can produce a stage transition or a wall splat. These events are the point at which additional team members can become available, so pay attention to the edge of the arena and to the result of your Link Attack.

Use the first two characters deliberately

Because your opening pair is the only pair immediately available, give those characters the jobs you understand best. You can start with the fighter whose close-range buttons feel natural, then use the second character to cover a different distance or situation. Do not judge the other two characters by their opening absence; they are designed to enter through the match’s Break and round progression.

Which beginner combos should I learn?

The official guide calls the following sequences beginner-friendly Link Attack examples. They are demonstrations of the system, not guaranteed optimal routes for every character, balance update, or situation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Sequence Officially described result How to use it while learning
Light → Light → Light → Light Chains into a Skill and can trigger a Break, described as a stage transition. Start here when you want the simplest repeated-button route.
Medium → Medium → Medium Leads into a Super Skill. Practice recognizing the timing and the resource result after the medium string.
Heavy → Heavy → Heavy Leads into an Ultimate Skill. Use it to learn how a heavy route differs from the light and medium routes.
Light → Medium → Heavy → Skill → Assemble Rush → Follow-up Attack An advanced route shown by the guide. Attempt it only after the shorter strings are consistent.

Begin with one route, not all four. Repeat it until you can identify when the Skill or team action occurs, then test the same route near the edge of the stage so you can see how a possible Break changes the situation.

How do I defend myself?

Start with Guard

Hold back for a standing Guard. Hold down-back for a crouching Guard. Make Guard your first defensive habit: it gives you a clear answer when you are unsure whether to attack, and it lets you observe what the opponent does next.

Use Assemble Counter when you are not guarding

Press □ + × while not guarding to perform Assemble Counter. The maneuver makes your character backstep and can automatically counter an attack during that maneuver. Practice it against a predictable training scenario rather than trying to use it randomly in your first match.

Use Crossover while guarding

Press □ + × while guarding to activate Crossover. A teammate is called in to interrupt the opponent and create an opening for a counteroffensive. The input is the same button combination as Assemble Counter, but your defensive state determines which action occurs: not guarding produces Assemble Counter, while guarding produces Crossover.

Should I use Quick Skills or motion inputs?

The game offers two input styles for Skills. Traditional Command Inputs, also called motion inputs, require the familiar directional motions. Quick Skills execute a Skill with one button, and the Quick Skill button can be changed in the control settings.

Option Input demand Officially stated trade-off Best first use
Quick Skills One button for a Skill The guide presents them as the accessible starting option. Use them while learning movement, team timing, and basic combos.
Command Inputs Directional motion plus an attack input The guide says they provide slightly higher damage and generate more Skill Gauge. Add them to combos after the rest of the sequence feels comfortable.

There is no need to choose permanently. Sekine’s suggested progression is to begin with Quick Skills, then try Command Inputs in combos as your execution improves. Check the control settings if the Quick Skill button is uncomfortable or conflicts with another hand position.

How should I practice?

Use Training Mode’s information tools

The FAQ lists Training Mode with command-input display, frame-data display, damage display, scenario presets, bot settings, and recording/replay for bots. It also supports local two-player training and an online training option in a Room Match. These features let you replace guesswork with a specific observation: whether an input was recognized, how much damage a route caused, or whether a defensive response worked against a recorded attack.

  1. Choose one Link Attack from the table above.
  2. Repeat it until the command display confirms the sequence consistently.
  3. Set a bot or scenario that attacks in a predictable way.
  4. Practice either standing Guard, crouching Guard, Assemble Counter, or Crossover against that situation.
  5. Try the same action after a Break or team call so you learn when the extra character becomes relevant.

This is a practice method based on the official training features, not a claim about a particular win rate or competitive result.

Which modes are available?

The FAQ separates the released game’s offline content from its online requirements. Offline modes listed by the FAQ include Episode Mode, local Versus, Training Mode, All-Star Arena, Battle Guides, and Character Guides. Arcadia Rumble is also playable offline with optional online features.

The PlayStation Store listing identifies practice mode, control reminders, tutorial reminders, and offline pausing as accessibility-related features. Use the reminders if you return after a break, and configure buttons before training so the inputs you practice match the layout you intend to use in matches.

Common first-session problems and fixes

“My fourth character is unavailable.”

That is expected at match start. Only the first two selected characters are initially available; the remaining members are assembled after a Break or a lost round.

“I cannot perform a Skill consistently.”

Switch to Quick Skills and verify the assigned button in control settings. Once the timing of the Link Attack is familiar, reintroduce the Command Input version to pursue the guide’s stated damage and Skill Gauge advantages.

“I keep attacking when I should defend.”

Spend a Training Mode session holding back and down-back against a predictable bot action. After Guard feels automatic, test the □ + × input first while not guarding for Assemble Counter, then while guarding for Crossover.

“The long combo drops before the team action.”

Return to one of the repeated-button routes. The Light → Light → Light → Light, Medium → Medium → Medium, and Heavy → Heavy → Heavy examples are simpler reference points than the advanced Light → Medium → Heavy → Skill → Assemble Rush → Follow-up Attack route.
