Start MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls by learning one lead character, one simple attack route, guarding, and a single assist call. Matches use four-character teams, but only your first two fighters are available at the start. The other two enter after a qualifying stage break or when you lose a round. Training Mode, Startup Battle, local matches, and offline modes let you build those skills before playing online.

How MARVEL Tōkon matches are structured

MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a four-character team fighter with a shared health bar. Selecting four characters does not put all four on screen or immediately at your disposal. Each side begins with its first two selected characters. Your third and fourth characters become available when the match reaches a qualifying stage break, or automatically after you lose a round.

The official FAQ and PlayStation’s product information describe several attacks that can cause a stage transition: certain attacks, throws, selected Skill attacks, and a successful light-route Link Attack near the edge of the screen that produces a transition or wall splat. Until one of those conditions occurs, your opening plan is built around the first two characters.

This structure gives a beginner a manageable starting point. You can concentrate on one character while learning how the team supports that character, then add the remaining two as the match opens up. Game Director and Lead Battle Designer Kazutoshi Sekine explained that “This means you don’t have to master the whole roster to be effective, and in that sense, can approach the game like a more traditional fighter if you choose to.” Read the full PlayStation.Blog interview for that design context.

What you need to play

The game is available on PlayStation 5 and PC. The exact online requirement depends on your platform, while every offline mode can be used without an online subscription. The official FAQ was updated August 18, 2026; check your regional store for current editions and availability.

Platform or edition What the official sources establish Online requirement
PS5 Supported platform. A physical PS5 Standard Edition is confirmed, and digital upgrades can be purchased through the PlayStation Store. Internet connection and PlayStation Plus for online gameplay.
PC Supported platform with the same core game modes described for PS5. Internet connection and a PlayStation account for online gameplay.
Standard Edition The FAQ confirms a physical PS5 version. Regional pricing and stock are not stated in the cited sources. Same platform requirement as the PS5 or PC version you use.
Digital Deluxe Edition Digital edition with additional content. The Year 1 Character and Stage Pass is included. Same platform requirement as above.
Ultimate Edition Digital edition with additional content. The Year 1 Character and Stage Pass is included. Same platform requirement as above.

PlayStation confirms that any PS5-compatible arcade stick or leverless controller can be used, and the game allows input customization. These are optional control choices, not prerequisites. A standard gamepad is enough to learn the systems.

Your first learning sequence

Use the following order so that each new mechanic has a purpose in a match. The sequence is a practical way to combine the controls and modes documented in the official beginner’s guide; it is not a claim that one combo or team is universally optimal.

  1. Play Startup Battle or a built-in guide. Use the introductory material to identify movement, attack, Skill, Guard, assist, switch, and recovery controls. Confirm the button labels against your current control layout because inputs can be customized.
  2. Choose one lead you actually enjoy controlling. Try several characters, then settle on one whose movement and input style feel natural. You do not need to learn the entire roster before becoming effective. A PlayStation hands-on preview from 2025 described Captain America as a versatile all-rounder and an entry point, but that was a dated preview observation rather than a current tier ranking or official beginner recommendation.
  3. Learn one basic attack route. Start with a repeatable sequence that you can perform from a normal hit. Do not begin by memorizing a long, situation-specific combo. Your first goal is to recognize when the route connects and finish it consistently.
  4. Add one Quick Skill. Quick Skills use a single button, making them the accessible way to include special attacks while you are still learning movement and defense.
  5. Drill standing and crouching Guard. Standing Guard uses back; crouching Guard uses down-back. Practice changing between them without releasing your block direction accidentally.
  6. Call one assist. Press Cross for an Assemble Assist, using a directional input to select which teammate answers. Learn what the call does before adding direct character switching.
  7. Add the Switch prompt. After an assist, watch for the brief “Switch?” prompt and press L2 for a seamless switch. You are learning two separate decisions: when a teammate should help and when you should take control of that teammate.
  8. Test the sequence offline. Use local Versus, Training Mode, or another offline mode to repeat the same attack, Guard, assist, and switch decisions without online matchmaking pressure.

Quick Skills, Command Inputs, and attack routes

Start with Quick Skills

A Quick Skill is activated with a single button. This lets you concentrate on spacing, timing, and confirming that an attack connected rather than dividing attention between movement and a motion input. Use Quick Skills while you establish a reliable opening route.

Add Command Inputs when you are ready

Command Inputs use traditional motion inputs. The official beginner guide says they provide slightly higher damage and generate more Skill Gauge than the corresponding Quick Skills. That difference gives you a reason to learn them, but it does not make them mandatory for starting out. Add one motion at a time after your basic route works with the simpler input.

Use Training Mode to understand the route

Training Mode can display command inputs, frame data, and damage. It also provides scenario presets and bot settings, allowing you to check what happens when an attack is blocked, when you are hit, or when a teammate is called. Record and replay tools let you create a repeatable situation instead of relying on memory.

A useful progression is to perform your route against a stationary bot, then against a blocking bot, and finally after a recorded attack. The purpose is to learn which parts of the sequence are guaranteed, which require a read, and which leave you vulnerable. The game’s tools support that investigation; they do not establish a single best route for every character.

Defense: Guard, Assemble Counter, and Crossover

Standing and crouching Guard

Hold back to use standing Guard and down-back to use crouching Guard. Practice both positions in short intervals, then alternate them while watching the opponent’s attack height. Your first defensive target is not a perfect block sequence; it is avoiding panic and maintaining the correct direction.

Assemble Counter

While you are not guarding, press Square + Cross to perform Assemble Counter. The official beginner guide recommends practicing this and Crossover in Startup Battle. Learn the timing in a controlled setting before trying to interrupt an opponent who is already attacking.

Crossover

While guarding, press Square + Cross to perform Crossover. This calls a teammate to interrupt the opponent. Because it is performed from Guard, it belongs in your defensive decision tree rather than your normal attack route. Practice recognizing when the opponent is continuing pressure and when Crossover gives you a chance to regain control.

Button names in these examples refer to the documented PlayStation layout. If you remap controls or play on PC with another device, verify the active layout in the game before drilling the inputs.

Assists and direct switching: the foundation of team synergy

Call an assist first

Press Cross to call an Assemble Assist. Directional inputs choose the teammate. An assist can create an opening, interrupt pressure, or extend a sequence while you remain in control of your current character. Start by learning one purpose for each available assist instead of trying to remember every possible interaction.

Switch after the assist

Direction plus L2 switches characters directly. After an assist, the brief “Switch?” prompt offers a seamless switch with L2. This lets you turn a support call into a change of point character, but it also changes which moves, movement options, and defensive timing you must manage. Practice the assist by itself first, then add the switch only when you can identify the prompt.

Choose teammates using practical questions

No reviewed official source establishes a strongest beginner team or a current competitive tier list. Instead, evaluate a team with four questions:

  • Which character do you most want to control for the majority of a round?
  • Does that character’s input style feel comfortable enough to repeat under pressure?
  • Which teammate’s assist helps you create an opening or continue a sequence you already understand?
  • Do you want to practice switching immediately, or would you rather stay with one lead while learning the fundamentals?

These are decision axes derived from the documented assist and switching systems, not official character classes. A team is useful when its calls are understandable to you, not because it has an unverified ranking label.

When the third and fourth characters become available

The opening two-character phase is temporary. A qualifying stage break can bring the next characters into the match. According to the official FAQ and PlayStation guide, possible triggers include landing certain attacks, throws, selected Skill attacks, or a light-route Link Attack near the screen edge that causes a transition or wall splat. Losing a round also unlocks the additional characters.

Because the trigger can occur during active play, do not treat your third and fourth picks as irrelevant backups. You can prepare for them by learning one assist call and one basic action for each teammate, even if your first practice sessions remain focused on the lead. The shared health bar means that team decisions affect one overall resource rather than four independent life totals.

Training Mode: what to practice and why

The official FAQ confirms that Training Mode supports team-input practice, combo routing, command-input display, frame-data display, damage display, scenario presets, bot settings, and record/replay tools. It also supports local two-player training. Use those tools to answer specific questions instead of simply repeating a combo.

Drill 1: confirm your controls

Open the input display and perform movement, Guard, a Quick Skill, Assemble Assist, and a switch. If an input appears differently from what you intended, fix the controller layout before practicing execution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Drill 2: build a safe starting route

Set the bot to stand still and perform one basic attack route. Add a Quick Skill at the end. Watch the damage display, then repeat until you can finish the route without looking at the command list.

Drill 3: test defense

Use a scenario preset or bot setting that produces an attack. Practice standing Guard, crouching Guard, and the Square + Cross defensive input while guarding for Crossover. Change the scenario only after you can recognize the incoming action.

Drill 4: connect an assist

Call an Assemble Assist with Cross and each directional selection. Observe where the teammate appears and what kind of opening or continuation it creates. Do not add a switch until you know which call you are trying to use.

Drill 5: add the seamless switch

Call the assist, wait for the “Switch?” prompt, and press L2. Repeat from the same situation, then try it after your basic attack route. The aim is to make the prompt part of your visual routine rather than a button you press at random.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Drill 6: use record and replay

Record a bot attack or approach, replay it, and test one response at a time. Compare blocking, Crossover, movement, and your chosen assist. This gives you a repeatable question to solve and makes frame-data and damage displays useful evidence for your own decisions.

Offline modes and online requirements

You can learn the game without an online subscription. The official FAQ lists the following offline or locally playable content:

Common beginner problems and fixes

“I selected four characters, but only two are available.”

This is the intended opening structure. Your first two characters begin the match; the third and fourth become available after a qualifying stage break or after you lose a round. Look for attacks, throws, selected Skills, or a screen-edge light-route Link Attack that produces the transition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“My assist calls the wrong teammate.”

Cross calls Assemble Assist, while directional inputs select the teammate. Return to Training Mode, enable the input display, and practice the direction before pressing Cross. Check whether your custom control layout changes the documented button arrangement.

“I cannot perform the motion input consistently.”

Use the Quick Skill version while you learn movement and defense. Then slow the motion down in Training Mode with the command-input display enabled. Command Inputs offer slightly higher damage and more Skill Gauge, but they are an upgrade path rather than a requirement for your first matches.

“I switch when I meant to assist.”

Keep the actions separate during practice. First press Cross and identify the assist. Only press direction plus L2 for a direct switch, or L2 when the post-assist “Switch?” prompt appears. Rehearse each action from a stationary situation before combining them.

“Online play is locked or unavailable.”

On PS5, check your internet connection and PlayStation Plus status. On PC, confirm internet access and that the required PlayStation account is linked. You can continue learning in Training Mode, local Versus, Episode Mode, guides, and the other offline options while resolving account or network issues.

“Do I need an arcade stick?”

No. PlayStation confirms support for PS5-compatible arcade sticks and leverless controllers, but they are optional. Use the controller that lets you perform Guard, assist, and switch inputs consistently; consider another device only if your current control method is uncomfortable.

A repeatable first-week practice plan

Keep each session focused on one layer rather than trying to master the entire roster.

  1. Session 1: Complete Startup Battle or the guides, confirm your control layout, and choose a lead character.
  2. Session 2: Practice movement, standing Guard, crouching Guard, and one basic attack route.
  3. Session 3: Add a Quick Skill, then compare it with the corresponding Command Input in Training Mode.
  4. Session 4: Practice Assemble Assist with each directional teammate selection.
  5. Session 5: Add the “Switch?” prompt and L2 seamless switch after the assist.
  6. Session 6: Drill Assemble Counter while not guarding and Crossover while guarding.
  7. Session 7: Play local Versus or an offline mode and look for one moment to apply each learned action. Move to online matches when you can perform the basics without needing to watch the command display continuously.

This plan is deliberately narrow: one lead, one route, one Skill, one assist, and one switch. Once those actions are reliable, you can expand the team, learn more routes, and use Training Mode’s scenario and replay tools to investigate specific match situations.
