Vanguard, Duelist, and Strategist are Marvel Rivals’ three official hero categories. Use them as a first clue about the kind of team contribution a hero is built to make, then inspect that hero’s current abilities, base statistics, and team-up options. The label helps you narrow your choice; it does not prescribe one permanent playstyle or a universal team composition.
What the three Marvel Rivals roles actually tell you
The role badge is a category, not a complete instruction manual. Marvel Rivals’ official hero directory gives each character a role label alongside individual abilities, base statistics, and team-up abilities. Those details determine how a particular hero creates value in a match.
A useful way to read the categories is to ask what problem a hero’s current kit helps the team solve. A Vanguard is generally considered when the team needs a durable presence that can contest space or absorb attention. A Duelist is considered when the team needs pressure and target damage. A Strategist is considered when the team needs sustain, utility, or resource support. These are practical interpretations for choosing a hero, not formal definitions published as a universal ruleset.
Two heroes with the same label can still require very different positioning, timing, and priorities. A role tells you where to start your investigation; the ability descriptions tell you what to do once the match begins.

Vanguard: the space-and-survival question
What a Vanguard contributes
When you hover over a Vanguard, think first about the team’s ability to occupy contested space. A Vanguard may be the hero you choose when allies need room to operate, an objective needs a body on it, or the opposing team’s attention must be pulled away from more vulnerable teammates. The exact way that happens depends on the individual kit.
Some Vanguards may create value by staying present in a fight, while others may rely more on movement, disruption, barriers, or another form of control. Do not assume that every Vanguard should stand in front of the team at all times. Check the hero’s ability range, defensive tools, movement options, and cooldowns in the official directory before deciding how aggressively to play.
How to evaluate a Vanguard kit
- Presence: Can the hero remain relevant while contesting an objective or taking pressure?
- Entry and exit: Does the kit provide a reliable way to begin an engagement and a way to leave before resources are exhausted?
- Protection: Which abilities help allies survive, reposition, or continue dealing damage?
- Disruption: Can the hero force opponents to move, interrupt a plan, or make a dangerous area harder to hold?
- Team-up value: Does a listed team-up ability change which allies benefit from choosing this Vanguard?
These questions are more useful than a simple “How much health does this hero have?” Durable statistics matter, but a hero that cannot reach, contest, or influence the fight may not meet the team’s immediate need.

Consider a Vanguard when your team is losing access to the objective, when opponents can freely reach your back line, or when no one is creating a safe place for allies to fight. That does not mean a Vanguard automatically fixes those problems. The hero still has to be able to reach the relevant area, and the rest of the team must use the space that the Vanguard creates.
Mode context matters. A kit that excels at holding a predictable location may feel different in a mode that constantly changes the engagement distance. Read the objective rules and map geometry together with the hero’s abilities rather than treating the role label as a guarantee.
Duelist: the pressure-and-target question
What a Duelist contributes
A Duelist is the category to examine when the team needs to threaten opponents directly. In practical terms, that can mean sustained damage, burst windows, finishing wounded targets, or forcing enemies to respect a particular angle. The official label does not tell you which of those patterns applies to every Duelist.
Damage alone is not the whole job. A Duelist creates value when attacks connect at the right time, when the hero survives long enough to use its tools again, and when pressure helps the team claim space or an objective. A high-damage ability used from an impossible position contributes less than a modest attack that consistently denies an opponent a safe route.

How to evaluate a Duelist kit
- Threat range: Identify whether the hero is most effective at close, medium, or long distance and which enemies can punish that range.
- Target access: Look for movement, reach, or other tools that let the hero act on the intended target.
- Survivability: Note defensive abilities, escape options, and the situations in which they are available.
- Conversion: Ask what happens after damage is dealt: can the kit secure an elimination, deny a retreat, or create a new opening?
- Cooldown rhythm: Learn which abilities must be saved for a winning exchange and which can be used to maintain ordinary pressure.
A Duelist who is constantly waiting for a perfect attack may leave the team without pressure for too long. Conversely, using every tool at the first sight of an opponent can leave the hero unable to respond when the real engagement begins. The correct rhythm comes from the individual hero’s ability descriptions and the match situation.
When a Duelist is a sensible choice
Choose a Duelist when the team needs help removing a key threat, punishing exposed opponents, or opening a fight through reliable pressure. If opponents are already controlling every approach, a Duelist may need a Vanguard’s space-making or a Strategist’s sustain before damage can be applied consistently. Role choice is therefore a team decision, not a claim that one category is always stronger.
Strategist: the sustain-and-utility question
What a Strategist contributes
Strategists are the category to inspect when the team needs to stay functional through a fight. Their value can come from healing, defensive utility, information, enabling effects, or another resource that lets allies continue operating. The exact mix is hero-specific, so avoid treating “Strategist” as a synonym for one button or one distance from the action.
A Strategist often has to make choices about timing. Saving a resource for a predictable danger may be more valuable than spending it immediately, while delaying support for too long can cost an ally the chance to act. Read the kit’s targeting rules, area limits, cooldowns, and resource generation before deciding where the hero should stand.
How to evaluate a Strategist kit
- Support output: Determine whether the hero primarily restores health, prevents damage, improves allied actions, or combines several forms of assistance.
- Self-preservation: A support tool cannot help the team if the hero is repeatedly removed before using it. Check movement and defensive options.
- Resource model: Identify what fills the hero’s resource and whether healing, damage, or another action changes its availability.
- Coverage: Check whether support is single-target, area-based, line-based, or dependent on a particular position.
- Threat contribution: Look at the hero’s own damage or disruption tools; support does not mean ignoring opponents.
When a Strategist is a sensible choice
A Strategist is worth considering when allies are losing fights they could otherwise win, when the team cannot sustain repeated engagements, or when utility is more valuable than adding another source of direct pressure. A Strategist still needs a clear plan for dealing with enemy threats. If the hero cannot safely reach allies or maintain its resource, the category alone will not solve the problem.
Vanguard vs. Duelist vs. Strategist at a glance
The table below is a practical decision aid rather than an official definition. Start with the team problem in the first column, then verify that the chosen hero’s current kit can address it.
| Role | Team question to ask | How value is commonly created | What to verify on the hero page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vanguard | Who can contest space and keep the team involved in the fight? | Presence, protection, disruption, or an ability that makes an area safer to occupy. | Defensive tools, movement, engagement range, cooldowns, base statistics, and team-up ability. |
| Duelist | Who can apply decisive pressure to the right target? | Damage, target access, finishing power, or pressure that forces opponents to give up position. | Threat range, mobility, survivability, damage windows, and ability timing. |
| Strategist | Who can keep allies active or change the conditions of the fight? | Healing, protection, utility, resource support, or a combination of support and threat. | Support coverage, resource generation, self-preservation, targeting rules, and team-up ability. |
The comparison is intentionally not a ranking. A role becomes valuable in relation to the map, mode, opposing heroes, and the kits already selected by your teammates.

Why the hero kit matters more than the label
The official directory presents more than the three category names. It lists each hero’s abilities, base statistics, and team-up abilities, which gives you the information needed to turn a broad role idea into a specific plan.

Start by identifying the hero’s basic attack or primary action, then map the abilities that change movement, defense, damage, healing, or control. Note whether each tool is aimed at an ally, an enemy, an area, or the hero itself. A role explanation that ignores these details can lead you to copy a play pattern that does not fit the character.
Connect abilities to a repeatable sequence
After reading the descriptions, write a simple sequence in your own words: how you enter a fight, what you do when an opponent commits, how you help an ally, and how you leave. This sequence is not a fixed combo; it is a way to test whether the kit has a coherent plan. If an ability seems useful only in a rare situation, identify the trigger that makes that situation likely instead of forcing it into every engagement.
Check team-up abilities separately
Team-up abilities can change the value of a hero alongside particular allies. Because those interactions are listed with the hero’s other information, check them after you know the basic kit. Do not assume that a team-up makes a hero mandatory or that a hero is weak without one; use it as another factor in the draft and match context.
Current official examples and what they demonstrate
The October 6, 2026 balance post organizes changes under the same three headings used for the role categories. It lists Devil Dinosaur as a Vanguard, Cyclops as a Duelist, and Adam Warlock as a Strategist. Those examples are useful for recognizing the labels, but the post also shows why the label cannot stand in for a full guide: each hero’s abilities received individual tuning.

| Hero | Role shown in the October 6, 2026 balance post | What the example tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Devil Dinosaur | Vanguard | A Vanguard heading identifies the official category; inspect the hero’s current ability changes before deciding how to use it. |
| Cyclops | Duelist | A Duelist heading identifies the official category; target pressure and positioning still come from the current kit. |
| Adam Warlock | Strategist | A Strategist heading identifies the official category; support timing and resource use must be read from the current abilities. |
The examples are dated deliberately. Balance notes are snapshots, not permanent promises about how a hero will play in every future season.
Role-wide mechanics can change between patches
The September 8, 2026 balance post recorded changes that applied to Strategist resource conversions. Healing-to-energy conversion changed from 70% to 65%, and damage-to-energy conversion changed from 55% to 50%. These are game-mechanic values attributed to Marvel Rivals / NetEase Games in that dated update; they are not statistics showing that Strategists perform better or worse than other roles.

This distinction matters when you learn a role. A guide written around one resource value can become inaccurate after a balance update, even if the category name remains unchanged. Before relying on a remembered interaction, read the latest official balance notes and the live hero entry.
Season 10.5 began on October 9, 2026 at 09:00 UTC according to the official patch notes. That date provides a useful freshness marker for current discussions, but it does not make every ability value permanent. If you are reading this after another update, recheck the current notes before treating the examples above as unchanged.

How to choose a role in an actual match
Step 1: Identify the team’s missing function
Look at the heroes already selected and the way the opposing team is winning exchanges. Is your team failing to reach the objective, failing to threaten a target, or failing to stay alive after the first engagement? Those observations point toward Vanguard, Duelist, or Strategist respectively, but they are only a starting hypothesis.
Step 2: Select two candidate heroes in the relevant category
Use the official directory to compare the candidates’ abilities, base statistics, and team-up options. Favor the kit whose range, movement, and resource demands match the map and your own comfort level. A theoretically ideal function is not useful if you cannot execute the hero’s timing.
Step 3: Match the kit to the mode and map
Consider how often fights occur, how far allies must travel, and whether the objective creates a predictable location. A hero that depends on close-range access may need a different plan from one that contributes across a wider area. The role label stays the same while the practical value of those tools changes with the environment.
Step 4: Define one job for the first fight
Choose a measurable intention: hold an approach, pressure a priority target, keep a teammate active through an engagement, or deny an enemy action. This prevents you from trying to perform every possible function at once. After the fight, change the plan only when the opponents or objective state gives you a reason.
Step 5: Reassess after the first major exchange
If your Vanguard cannot reach the contested area, your Duelist cannot access a target, or your Strategist cannot safely support allies, the problem may be the matchup or positioning rather than the category. Review the ability descriptions and adjust your route, timing, or target before abandoning the role.

Common mistakes when comparing the roles
Mistake: treating role labels as fixed play instructions
A category is a useful shorthand, not a guarantee that every hero follows the same rotation. Fix this by reading the current ability list and testing the hero’s actual range, cooldowns, and resource rules.
Mistake: assuming one role must appear in a fixed number
The official hero and balance materials categorize heroes and discuss mechanics, but they do not prescribe one universal composition for every mode. Build around the objective and the kits your team can use effectively instead of forcing a formula.
Mistake: choosing damage without considering access
A Duelist’s damage matters only when the hero can reach a target and survive long enough to apply it. Check movement, defensive tools, and the opposing team’s threats before deciding that adding another damage-focused hero solves the problem.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Mistake: treating support as passive
A Strategist’s support tools still require positioning, timing, and resource management. Read the hero’s offensive and utility abilities as carefully as the healing or protection effects.
Mistake: learning an old patch value by memory
Role-wide and individual tuning can change. The September 8, 2026 Strategist conversion changes demonstrate that even a resource interaction may be adjusted. Verify the latest official notes when a value affects your plan.
A compact decision guide
- Pick a Vanguard candidate when the immediate problem is access to space, contesting, or protecting the team’s operating area.
- Pick a Duelist candidate when the team can reach fights but lacks reliable pressure on important targets.
- Pick a Strategist candidate when allies need sustain, utility, or resources to turn even engagements into wins.
- Change your candidate when the map, mode, enemy threats, or existing team-up options make the original kit difficult to use.
- Recheck the current notes whenever a patch changes a role-wide mechanic or one of the hero abilities central to your plan.
Used this way, Vanguard, Duelist, and Strategist are practical questions rather than rigid boxes: what does the team need, which current kit supplies it, and can you apply that kit in this match?
